But can you be more specific about 1) what the damage is, 2) who's responsible, and 3) how it would hold up in court?

1) Inability to access one's OS for all affected users, and on an individual level data loss (where applicable) and/or financial or other damages as a result of lack of access or data loss (where applicable)
2) Riot, with intent
3) It won't because such cases never hold against software companies no matter how egregious. If actually taken to court by a state, it would be about disabling user's access to their OS as a side effect of their intentional change, and cases of data loss or actual damages would have to be individual civil cases

This statement doesn't mean anything. What damage did Riot do by configuring your OS to enforce IOMMU policy properly? An actual SATA/NVMe device faulting as a result would be due to its own shitty firmware acting out of line. Nonetheless, you'd be able to plug said device into another computer without issue.

You should know more about the software you willingly install onto your machine. Riot can be sued for tangible, legal damages, but preventing unauthorized access to their games using non-destructive means is within their rights.

What makes it a nothingburger is that damages haven't been presented. It's all hypotheticals or spectacular reframing.

It is Riot's job to ensure the integrity of their online video games, no matter how much you like or dislike their video games. In fact, the user base demands it because they don't want to play against cheaters. The fact that it's been 6 years and Vanguard is still around shows that there is a group of people (whatever you think of them) willing to compromise their computers in this way to play a video game with whatever competitive integrity it affords.

You're already required to have TPM, Core Isolation (Memory Integrity), and whatever else enabled on your computer to play. The precedent is already there.

Vanguard hasn't gotten any more or less intrusive as a result of the update. It's also not going anywhere. It isn't expanding to a game near you, and it likely won't go away unless Linux/Valve OS takes over.
Since its release in April 2020, it's always been a massive security issue with full access to everything on your PC. But so is everything else you run as Admin. What makes Vanguard scary is that it runs as a boot driver and can update automatically. That behavior isn't hidden, either. It takes one internet search to figure out how nasty the software is. And unlike an actual rootkit, you can exit out of it, boot in safe mode, or uninstall Vanguard cleanly. It's a separate installer from any Riot game, so you know what you're getting into.
The update is a nothingburger, but complaining about something that didn't happen makes you look like a salty cheater.
