Valve introduces Steam Deck

I don't get all the hype around OLED screens. Seems like the equivalent of the 3D fad of the last generation that never went anywhere.
I've only used one, but Vita's OLED screen makes a significant difference. I've had both and while it's not a dealbreaker to use LCD, OLED is objectively superior.

For anybody that may be interested. Xenia emulation on the deck is a thing now. I'm currently playing Lost Odyssey and have a consistent 30fps for the most part with minor graphical glitches here and there. I'm only like the first hour in, but well, seems like a good moment to fuck around with 360 emulation since it's already included in emudeck now.

Important detail though,

Now Xenia Canary it's working (at least on SteamOS 3.5) with dx12 so here they are the steps:
  1. Go to Desktop Mode, in Xenia folder (within emudeck folder), open xenia-canary.config.toml with Kate, search for the line 209 and change that gpu = "any" for gpu = "d3d12".
By default I had it in Vulkan and it was having a much rougher time running, once swapped to d3d12 it's been stable ever since.

All these competitors are getting to the point where this whole "gaming handheld" market will become oversaturated (if it hasn't already).

Are any of them even as good and/or better than Steam Deck?

The way I see it, it is just a new product category that Valve has shown as being a viable market and other hardware manufacturers are there to offer alternatives. As far as I'm concerned, the more the merrier, far more choices and competition always favors the end consumer. The laptop PC market is far more over saturated but nobody is complaining. Also I think a lot of people are finding these handhelds as a viable alternative to get into PC gaming without having to deal with how overpriced the PC component market has gotten as of late. ( Not just GPUs, even basic motherboards are becoming overpriced.)

While waiting on the sidelines I decided to get a Z1X Rog ally for the price of a brand new OLED Deck and didn't look back. At least ROG doesn't have awful community moderators that will mass report and can get steam to impose restrictions on your account so you can't even change your profile picture. Fuck supporting valve or steam. never owning a steam deck. Valve doesn't even make games anymore.

With OLED each independent pixel is its own light source which means it can turn off completely to create perfect deep blacks unlike LCDs that need a separate back light layer. This is particularly bad in small screen that, because of their size, do not have local dimming zones, so there is this constant glow even in areas of the image that are supposed to be black but end up looking dark gray. As for example playing a game in a 4:3 aspect ration in an OLED you get perfect black bars to the sides of the image. Also OLED has better overall color reproduction allowing for more vibrancy and color saturation.

As for no wanting to support Valve, this goes back to what I always advocated regarding this new market: costumer choice. I'm glad that there are other hardware manufacturer making more alternatives to the Steam Deck so people can pick and choose whatever device fits their needs.

Although I'm not sure how owning a Rog Ally is going to help you regarding Steam moderation since you still need to log in to Steam to access your games unless you completely divorce your system from Valve and just play games using independent .exe files and use other companies' launchers.

Has anyone got one of the 8bitdo Ultimate controllers working with their Deck? Does it work over Bluetooth or do you have to use the dongle?
I got an SN30 working, but I needed to update the firmware. I know someone who got his working with the dongle, but he couldn't get the Bluetooth working until he updated the firmware on it too.

I feel like some of you madlads would get a kick out of this.

That extra screen needs to be on the bottom. The OLED screen is wonderful yet this is using it as the secondary screen.

can you use a stylus with the steam deck?

You'd need to use a stylus with a fatter nib. The pointy styluses of yesteryear only really work with the resistive touch screens not the modern capacitive touch screens.

Is the extra screen a touchscreen? Will you have to reverse the screens for 3DD games?

The extra screen is from Wisecoco - https://wisecocodisplaysolution.aliexpress.com/ They look to do a whole range of chinkshit displays, touch and none touch. I haven't been able to find the exact one from the tweet yet but it looks to be a 6 inch of some kind seeing as the edges of the decks display seem to match my OLED at 7.4 inch.
My point though was that the Deck OLED is a really nice display and this guy is using some chinkshit display as the primary, it makes no sense.

The original screen was 240p, does it really matter?

MelonDS is the standard DS emulator used on Deck, it supports upscaled internal resolution. By default when installed by EmuDeck it renders at 5x (1280x960) internal resolution. In short, yes I would say it matters.
But you're still missing the point. Why would anyone want to use a wanky LCD as the primary display when you can use a really good OLED.

If I were to guess, it's mostly for the form factor of having the controls on the same base as the lower display, as the DS did before.

Gonna ask this here, any idea how to get WMVs working for rpg maker/the CWC game

Available now!

Beta v2.0 is a full game experience, following the early misadventures of Chris and ending with his final showdown with MLW. I have plans for one more major update (v3.0) after this, adding the good ending, PVCC campus map, and CWCville's overworld/missions. The Kiwi Farms easter egg map is still planned as part of the good ending.
The farms' greatest contribution to society must be able to run on as much machines as possible

Go to decktop and install ProtonUp-qt, and use that to add Proton-GE. Then in Steam you go to the game's properties, and select it as the version of Proton to use for compatibility.

The same applies to Unity and really other engines where videos show up as static.

I already run GE-8-28 but still get the "ZeusVideoPlayer wont run" bullshit. Weird, must be something due to the way dependencies are on wine and probably how wmvs are programmed in rpg maker

You could try switching to experimental. GE is almost always ahead of Steam’s version, but some people have success switching between one and the other.
