Valve introduces Steam Deck

Limited edition white OLED coming out November 18th
It is now available and they are selling it for $30 over the black OLED Steam Deck. The increased price isn't that bad considering this difference is less than 5% more for a limited edition cosmetic.

Also, the Steam Autumn Sale has started and the LCD models are on sale. The 512GB LCD is $336.75 (25% off) and the 64GB LCD is $296.65 (15% off). Unfortunately there are no deals on any of the OLED models.

Think there'll be a winter sale with better discounts?

According to the price tracker here this sale is an all time low price for the 512GB LCD and it was also this cheap in September. My best guess is this sale price will be the same for the winter sale. The current Steam Deck sale prices should be good until December 4.

In-depth review:

Im wondering if the winter sale will bring a discount for the OLED. Probably not but I feel like I would pull the trigger if there was some sort of discount on the OLED.

iirc steam has a 30 day (might be more) "cooldown" on sales, meaning you can only do another discount after that period. if they follow that for their own hardware I haven't checked.

stores also sometimes do a post-christmas sale to get rid of stock that hasn't sold for christmas and now wastes space. less and issue for digital, but another change for even better deals.

I swear if Gabe Newell lives another two decades he's going to be the richest man in the world simply due to the fact that he didn't like Val be infested with weirdos
Valve acquired the pozzed devs who made Firewatch though.

Huh, that's a weird rule.

Shit, that was a mistake. Wasn't that simply a walking sim...? Why bother acquiring them even if it was "good"?

Well, they did end up making Half-Life; Alyx which was well received and there wasn't much on the way of "woke" in that game. Something tells me Valve kept them in a short leash or at least cracked down on the most radical elements of the studio. Valve's culture is very traditionally meritocratic and they are a privately owned company with no outside investments or stockholders to answer to so a lot of that kept the development of that game in line with the internal culture and legacy of the company.

it's so you can't raise your price before a sale, discount it and claim it's "cheaper" and other shenanigans. in some countries that's outright illegal, which steam would probably be on the hook for (or at least has to deal with).

however I looked it up and it's 30 days, and the big 4 sales per year (summer/winter/etc) are excluded from that period.

There has to be more to this rule though. Winter sale starts this thursday and I am sure 90% of the stuff from the fall sale will be on sale again.

It is official.

SteamOS expands beyond Steam Deck
The Legion Go S - Powered by SteamOS is the first officially licensed third-party handheld powered by SteamOS
With Lenovo's announcement at CES 2025 of the Lenovo Legion Go S, we are pleased to share that their "Powered by SteamOS" model is the first handheld officially licensed to ship with Valve's SteamOS. We built this operating system to provide a seamless user experience optimized for gaming, while retaining access to the power and flexibility of a PC. SteamOS is the same operating system we run on Steam Deck, and the team is making updates to ensure it fully supports the Lenovo Legion Go S and provides the same seamless experience customers expect.

In addition, the same work that we are doing to support the Lenovo Legion Go S will improve compatibility with other handhelds. Ahead of Legion Go S shipping, we will be shipping a beta of SteamOS which should improve the experience on other handhelds, and users can download and test this themselves. And of course we'll continue adding support and improving the experience with future releases.

Now, if only they officially expanded SteamOS to support desktop PCs, then I'd finally be able to move off Winblows.

By the way, has anyone here actually gotten themselves a Steam Deck Dock? How is it? Is the added benefit of an integrated stand worth the mark-up compared to a regular USB-C Hub?
You should just be using something like CachyOS if you are on a desktop and want the SteamOS interface. SteamOS is good for a gaming handheld, but it falters if you are using it for more traditional desktop work docked since it is immutable, limiting you to Flatpaks for permanent additions, you can't permanently install packages with the package manager, which again is fine for a primarily gaming handheld, not as much for a desktop.

Otherwise, for docks, I personally prefer standard USB hubs due to price and number of ports, even if they dont have a stand, but if you are re-purposing some docks, they may require additional drivers. I originally had a Thinkpad Dock which required installing drivers for display out, while another would do so without any.
