Valve introduces Steam Deck

I played through an entire 10h Civ V campaign on Steam Deck mostly using the trackpad.

How the hell is this trackpad so good?

I expected something like a laptop trackpad, but when I tried syncing a Magic Trackpad I immediately realized how much worse it is vs the built-in one. There's some really smart momentum applied to the mouse movements.

Is there software that will make a laptop trackpad behave like this? I understand it's intended to emulate a trackball and I bought one today just to see if that would be right but man I would love a trackpad this good on my Macbook.

Valve came out with the Steak controller that used two round trackpads to emulate trackballs. They clicked and everything.

I sometimes overshoot when using the trackpad, but I do enjoy the haptic features when clicking on something. I guess I still need time to get used to it though there haven't been many games in my library that need it. Currently enjoying Monster Hunter World on it.

When I think about 'cool stuff' I don't think about installing a shittier OS on a device that's built around a different one. There's absolutely no way the trade offs here are worth it, even considering what's compatible software wise with windows.

@zyclonPD I just don't buy this, steam hardware survey won't be perfect, and the MSRP of the card alone is 1600 us dollars not considering everything else you'd need to buy for a new PC with such hardware. Even just including people upgrading and somehow finding deals on such a hot commodity, which I doubt as scalper pricing seems to push the card nearer to 2k on average, you're not getting any cheaper than optimistically $ 1400. Deck base model's ~300 without taxes. I can see the argument of desktop PCs still being more popular, especially seeing as they're going to be more capable if you're not looking for portability, but that's with mid to lower high end builds, not something this ridiculous during a continuing recession. Are people really that desperate for a slightly better circus when their bread keeps dwindling?

True, considering storage space considerations for maybe playing games with intrusive DRM or hacked-together chinese ware from the 2000s. In the latter case, a VM would just be easier to use.

Seriously, it's been 2 fucking years and every single form factor released since the Steam Deck dropped has only served as an advertisement for the Steam Deck. Valve comes swinging out of the gate and their "minor refresh" has some actually noticeable improvements. Meanwhile, every other gaming company can't keep wearing their sphincter as a bowtie as their devices run hotter than a smartphone running Google Maps

I had high hopes for the lenovo legion. The price point really killed it for me though. At least having the right trackpad was a compromise and the ir sensor mouse function of the right controller was a neat idea, but $700 is really steep.

That cause while with most things under Valve's "flat structure" is annoying to get a product out when the stars align on a project most of the austic's agree upon wonderful things can happen.

You're not missing out on much, from what I've heard. That 1600p screen is going to do a really great job at highlighting all the terrible aspects of lowend gaming that a Z1 Extreme is going to pump out. Far too much icing for not enough cake. But that's basically the industry, at this point. None of them understand why things are popular beyond the surface level, so they end up strapping a rocket to a Barbie dream car and call it a Ferrari.

Has anyone tried hooking a eGPU to the Legion Go or other devices? According to the hardware specs the Legion Go has Thunderbolt 3, so it in theory should let you plug in an external high end GPU to handle the graphics.

For the Steam Deck Valve also had other advantages. They could be more aggressive with pricing since having Steam(OS) preinstalled "subsidizes" the cost. They were the first to get an APU from AMD with RNDA integrated graphics, which literally put the Steam Deck at the top for a while until the 6800U became widely avaliable. And they also had years of prior development on SteamOS, Steam Controllers, Proton, etc to build from this foundation.

Also every test when it comes to low power use blows the competition out of the water.

We're basically back to the Game Boy vs. Gear issue, where the Game Gear was more powerful but needed a lithium mine to run.
