we'll see if they learned anything and actually push it properly this time instead of just dumping it out there and hoping "the community" and other manufacturers will pick up the slack.
just imagine for a moment offering a better cut if you do a proper steam os version that runs properly on that thing (and what that would mean for linux gaming in general).

So besides cooling issues, I just remembered that Valve don't actually make games anymore. For the price they're asking, I would hope for and expect some unique and exclusive games. Especially considering that this is not a substitute for my computer. Plus any console game I can play on a computer gets played on a computer; and any console game that isn't on the computer is 90% likely to be a Nintendo game, and I already have that system.

So what exactly is this system attempting to do?

I wonder if Gabe saw just how many 2d and retro style games are on Steam, looked at the results of the various Steam Hardware survey's, saw the massive success of the Switch, and just went "Fuck it, we can do that too". Like it not even about making money its just getting more and more people to play PC games. The comment about the OS being completely free for any one to use means after Valve proves it can work there will be a TON of knockoff at various different price points.

Like I can see one being created that just supports Retroarch / PS1 and below emulation and similar games at a $200 price point. It would be like the Retroid Pocket 2 that also can play Steam games......which would be pretty damn nice.

Looks cool, I just haven't had any desire for a handheld console since I was a kid. I don't travel that much, at least not enough to justify buying this. I don't use any form of mass transit. If I'm out in public it's because I'm doing something, I won't be playing a game. If I had a ton of disposable income I'd probably pick one up just because it's kinda nifty imo. The kind of thing I like but know I wouldn't use much. Given that the Switch is just a few good nintendo games + a fuck ton of ports that are all likely on steam, and this will have all the steam games the switch doesn't have, this thing has a clear advantage over the switch. Then again, only children and man children buy handhelds so they are a lock for the switch.

Main specs are:

CPU: Zen 2 4c/8t, 2.4-3.5GHz (up to 448 GFlops FP32)
GPU: 8 RDNA 2 CUs, 1.0-1.6GHz (up to 1.6 TFlops FP32)
16 GB LPDDR5 RAM (5500 MT/s)
1280 x 800px (16:10 aspect ratio)

Considering it's RDNA 2 it should have variable rate shading and mesh shaders, two new funtions that help performance significantly in newer games. And an 800p screen is low enough resolution to not be taxing to any reasonable GPU. On paper it seems like they did make a balanced spec for newer AAA titles, but we'll only know for sure once there's actual hardware out.

A closer look at the videos playing Control would be nice, it's a recent game that takes advantage of these new architecture functions. From the brief snippets we got it seems to run fluidly.

I dunno m8, I play on Switch the most, and did the same for older handhelds like the PSP and Vita, because they're best suited for "pick up and play". Like I sometimes play just 30 minutes or one hour before work and it's nice to open the game exactly where you left it without having to deal with rebooting everything.

I don't want to rain in your parade but the average microSD is only suited for games with asset files that aren't ridiculously huge, which is the case for games on actual handheld consoles. There is a reason why I switched to a 1TB (nvme but sata is fine too) SSD because big PC games stutter too much on HDDs.

I think a lot of people in this thread are not looking at what it actually is the device is not meant to be a tower PC, Considering the specs on it, its probably the most powerful handheld device created. Being able to play AAA titles from a few years ago is a big deal for a handheld that runs steam games. Taking this thing outside is a meme and most people wont do that, its meant to be used around the house where you can't bring your PC to, also its not like they are overpricing it to like $1500 this thing is more affordable then most new smart phones.
