Vanillaware Thread - Odin, Muramasa, and Dragon's Crown

Necroing this thread. Unicorn Overlord is out in a week and I have been playing the demo for about 5 hours. Having a lot of fun, its a good mix of auto battler and strategy game, all with Vanillawares great art direction.

That being said, while I do plan on buying the game on release, theres apparently some localization schenanigans.

The localization seems fine they are just old English it up I guess to hit the Ogre Tactics/ FF Tactics writing. Though can't say anything about the rest of the game's writing though I want to believe they learned for others and made sure to keep tabs on the localizers.

Yeah I am about 5 hours into the demo and while the writing seems standard fantasy jrpg, it never seemed bad.

Now if only Vanillaware would port Dragons Crown to Xbox or PC so I could play it again!

I only disliked a few things about the demo the writing as many of the bosses tried to appeal to your sympathy. I understand that everyone has their reasons for fighting, but the two thieves fighting to heal heal one sick girl does not justify robbing and killing. I dislike how I could not kill the first one only imprison him instead of executing him while I was able to kill other people that were far more worthy of mercy.

The balance seems off pretty much in the demo knights are the only worth while melee unit to use for dps as assaulting lance can kill an entire squad so long as it can one shot which it often can. Maybe later the game will change it up, but as of right now their are just outright better units to use over all units filling a specific role that they alone can do.

The customization is lack I want more colors, hair types, skin, gender options ect for most units and custom names. The weapons also do not change on the model unlike other games, though I know that would be a big ask as unlike dragon's crown this games has a lot of classes.

Permadeath would be nice to as currently you can just throw your squads at the enemy if you don't care about them getting hurt unless you are like myself and place self imposed rules about keeping your units alive.

Mounted units are nuts, and the archers field aoe ability can wipe squads out.

I havnt finished the demo but I assume Josef gets killed or something and you lose your level 20 super knight

I would assume so as that is the classic fire emblem thing to do or he betrays you. I never used him as I no how those types of units play out i'd rather give exp to the units that are going to be around.

I'm about 10 hours into the game and it's great though pretty easy even on the hard difficulty, though you can fuck yourself over bad matchups especially when enemy units go all in for a ultra proficient in one type build, while most players will have all rounders. There were some maps where the enemy chained skills against me, which was actually a good challenge.

I really like the squad mechanic, it elevates the game over the usual Fire Emblem gameplay and makes support units essential. Having gear with skills also make you look into unit load and synergy that goes beyond big numbers.

Plot so far is kinda meh (I do like the occasional twist of a villain that acts antagonistic because it's better for the populace) but I'm hopeful it gets better once you get into the backstory.

The game did that a little too often in Cornia. Started rolling my eyes after the fifth guy to be secretly good. Especially the dude who was hogging all the food. His last minute turn around felt really cheap. At least the other areas aren't saturated with that so far.

Slight thread necro. I've only played Dragon's Crown and Muramasa. A thing I loved about both of those games were the food mini games. Nobody does anything cool like that anymore.

I started playing Dragon's Crown Pro again recently and it made think of seeing what thread existed for these games.

You really should try Odin Sphere as well. Really damn good, Vanilla visuals at their best.
