First of all, thank you!
We want to thank everyone who participated in the Thrills ‘n’ Chills livestream. We had a great time going live with our community and Rewinders. We heard some great feedback and are planning another event like it in the future *ooooooh*

AND thank you for your patience as we put the finishing touches on our Private Screening Game Mode. We are so excited for you to try it out!

Addressing feedback
We are listening! There has been a ton of feedback and constructive criticism coming through lately and we want you to know we hear and appreciate all of it. That’s why we dedicated this DevNotes to responding to your tweets:

“Me when dead game”

We’ve been hearing this since beta so DON’T PANIC we are far from dead. Hellbent has been making VHS for a long time (over 4 years!) and aren’t worried about blowing up overnight. We're really grateful for the amazing community we’ve build during EA without any marketing and have plans to push our game to a bigger audience the moment we are ready!

“get rid of the rotation store, it doesn’t help anyone”

We get a lot of feedback on our store format- both the daily rotation and the seasonal catalogs. We iterate each time we have a new store collection and will keep trying new systems until we’ve figured out a way that works. Keep the feedback coming!

“Please add a lot of monster changes next week alongside custom games...”

We summoned Jeff for an update on monster gameplay. We’re happy with the response to our latest updates: vending machines, plagues, and scream changes have been a good start to making the monster experience feel more fun.
Right now, we’re internally testing our booster packs which will allow us to release new monster perks and mutations at a quicker pace. Plus look out for discounted monster perks in this patch!

“Hello, there will be a translation of the game to take it to the Spanish-speaking public”

Translations are coming! We have engaged a localization studio and are finalizing our narrative to be translated into several languages.

“Ooh! Nice! I’ll jdut have to jump on VHS--Oh wait.. it’s never going to be on console."

Right now, we are focused on PC but we have plans to come to console in the future.

Our character team is amazing and we love cosmetics but this does not mean that we aren’t still working on other gameplay content. All of our teams work at different paces and our goal is just to get as much new stuff out as quick as we can!
There is a lot in the works right now and Private Screening will only improve our ability to test new game ideas and game modes alongside the community.

“But the tutorials kind of do a bad job at explaining. Idk, I wanna give VHS the benefit of the doubt and I wanna continue playing, but it is legitimately difficult to get into it.”

We are planning on revamping our tutorial system to make it more fun and informative for new players.
In the meantime, Private Screening will give new players the opportunity to try the game with their friends in a low-pressure situation. Single-player Private Screenings will even let you learn the map and practice skills with the place to yourself.

What’s new?
Private Screening is a big deal for us! It is a feature that you’ve been asking for for quite a while and we are so happy to release it.
  • Private Screening games allow you to play solo or in teams as teen or monster on all maps with all weapons, perks and mutation!
  • The only difference is there will be no progression in Private Screening games so you are still encouraged to play on our original matchmaking game mode.
  • Read the Patch Notes below for more info on Private Screening!

Can we talk about Reggie?
Sydney gives us a refresher on where the Sysop ARG left Reggie. Deathwire stole his spotlight and has him captured somewhere... but Reggie is still out there in the Beyond.
  • As for a release date, Reggie will not be escaping his metal prison in November... or 2023... The rest is a mystery.
  • Fun fact: Reggie is the first teen that we ever made! He is a fan favorite at Hellbent and we are all really excited for you to get to know him when the time comes.

Winter Event coming December
We won’t give away any details yet, but we are developing a Winter Event full of seasonal cosmetics, prizes and mini-games. (And maybe you noticed our sponsor's secret seasonal product in the video???)

Patch Notes 1.0.76005

Deathwire DLC Now Available on Steam and Epic Store

As of this patch, new playable characters will no longer be for sale for our premium currency FanBux. Instead, DLC content will be offered for both Flux in-game and for purchase outside of game as DLC on 3rd-party stores (Steam & Epic). Along with this change we've added a Flux compensation system. If players have already purchased items in-game and then acquire a DLC that contains the same items, they will receive equivalent Flux compensation for those items. For example, if someone already purchased Deathwire in-game and then purchase the Deathwire DLC, they will receive Flux equal to the value of Deathwire in the in-game store.

Private Screening

We're excited to announce the release of our Private Screening feature! Players will find it listed in our revised menu by pressing the 'Selected Game Mode' button. This mode allows players to either host their own private lobby for players to join, or join another player's hosted lobby. In addition to using the party system to take their friends into hosted lobbies, players can also invite anyone to join their lobby using a Custom Lobby Code. This is a 6 digit passcode that is unique to each hosted lobby.

Private Screening matches support between 1-5 players. This mode allows the monster to be randomly chosen from among multiple players who have chosen to play as monster or will automatically choose one of the teens to become the monster if no one in the lobby selects the role prior to the start of a match.

Custom lobbies have some special features, including giving players access to all weapons, weapon mods, perks and mutations whether they've been unlocked on the player's account or not. In addition, most prizes are available in unlimited quantities to use in your Private Screening games (note that map votes and point boosting prizes are not available in this mode). The host of the lobby is also able to set custom match settings. This includes the map, as well as optional game modifications such as randomizing perks, mutations, weapon mods, win conditions and whether the monster will remain in voice chat after the match has begun. We will be looking to add additional features to match settings in the future!

Finally, you can use the Private Screening mode to start a match on your own as either a lone teen or monster to explore the game's maps at your leisure.

Please note that progression is disabled in Private Screenings, so players will not be able to level up their characters and weapons, earn Flux or complete movies in this mode.

Monster

  • All monsters will now earn a perk discount at the end of every act, analogous to the discounts that teens currently have. Monster perk discounts can be used on any perk, allowing for new perk combinations!
  • The monster's three pings are now represented by three unique shapes and colors to help the monster player distinguish between them.
  • Updated several monster emotes to now loop until the player chooses to move.

Emotes

  • Added sound to the Teen emote The Chiller and the Werewolf emote Chiller Wolf.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed an issue where the RC Flyer could sometimes be hit by the monster from a much greater distance than normal after the RC Flyer fires on it.
  • Fixed an issue where the camera would sometimes shake for teen players when the monster scream shockwave occurred nearby even if the scream did not reach the teen.
  • Improved the look of the Smoke Screen smoky camera vignette effect.
  • A rift in the beyond is forming...

I don't think they get it. The player numbers are under 200 now. And they're still acting like everything is normal and uploading these little dev videos of themselves laughing and giggling.

2:30 in for the video and the old dude say's "We're not a dead game." You have under 200 players at peak hours now. They seem to think that all of the bullshit they've done will be forgotten once it leaves EA. Sorry old dude, that's now how it works. You get one and only one chance to launch your game and you fucked up.

I think it'll be more known for the more "acceptable" mistakes like extended closed beta and lack of advertising and everything else will be swept under the rug by the usual suspects. It's happened with every asym horror game.
 
I don't think people will forgive or forget how VHS openly courted streamers to the exclusion of people who actually wanted to play the game. By the time I actually got a key, my interest in the game was gone and they were already bending the knee to faggots.

I took a peak at Steam Charts and noticed it peaked at... 474 players yesterday.

Why is that? The new survivor, Reggie, the 12 or maybe 13-year-old black whiz kid character, was finally added. Compare that to when the robot was added back in September and the player count was closer to 1500.

If you're thinking "Hey! That's kind of like The Thing monster!" Yes, it's intentional. It comes with a new map called The Ice Station (get it?) and here are the abilities:

Dev Note: Our newest monster, the Anomaly is now available for play in an experimental 'Preview' state in Private Screening matches, along with the Ice Station map! Please note that this is not the final release of the monster or the map, and still uses some placeholder sounds, graphics and animations. This monster's powers, mutations and perks may also change significantly for its full release based on player feedback and internal testing.

Powers​

Disperse​

After focusing for 1 second, the Anomaly will Disperse for a maximum of 2.5 seconds. An active Disperse can be ended early by using the Power again after 1.8 seconds.

While Dispersed, the Anomaly cannot see or be seen by teens, cannot hear sounds, and moves 100% faster.

When Disperse ends, all teens within 4 meters of the Anomaly will be Gooped, slowing movement and preventing most actions for 1.8 seconds.

Disperse has a cooldown of 15 seconds and cannot be used for 3 seconds after hitting a teen.

Mimicry​

After focusing for 1.5 seconds, the Anomaly will gain the Mimicking status, taking on the likeness of a random active teen with 90% of a teen's run speed for 14 seconds or until cancelled by attacking or using the Power again.

While Mimicking, the Anomaly's Tension Track will be hidden from teens and the Anomaly's aura-reading effects will not function.

If struck by a weapon while Mimicking, the effect will be cancelled and the Anomaly will Flinch, unable to perform most actions for 1.5 seconds.

Scour​

After focusing for 1.5 seconds, the Anomaly will enter a Scouring state for up to 15 seconds, sinking partially into the floor and becoming immobile and Blinded.

While Scouring, all active teens will start to become Exposed to the Anomaly over 8 seconds, starting with those farthest away. Additionally, the cooldowns of the Disperse and Mimicry Powers will recover 100% faster.

Scour has a cooldown of 36 seconds.

Mutations​

Disperse​

Ripple​

When you use Disperse, and after-image of teens within 8 meters is shown to you for 4 seconds. The focus time required to use Disperse is increased by 20%.

Gooper​

The distance at which teens will be Gooped when emerging from Disperse is increased by 20%. Disperse can no longer be ended early.

Elusive​

If Disperse is used while Mimicking, the cooldown to use Disperse again is reduced by 50%. If Disperse is used while not Mimicking, the cooldown to use Disperse again is increased by 20%.

Mimicry​

Malign​

The cooldown of Mimicry is reduced by 10%. While using Mimicry, the Mimic will always appear to be injured regardless of the health state of the copied teen.

Committed​

While Mimicking, your movement speed will be 100% of a teen's base run speed. If Mimicking is removed by damage from weapons, the Anomaly will be Stunned instead of Flinched.

Infectious​

If the Anomaly injures a teen within 1.5 seconds of Mimicry ending, the teen will suffer the Busted status for 60 seconds. The focusing time required to use Mimicry is increased by 255.

Scour​

Seething​

While Scouring, the Anomaly will gain 1% Rage every second. While Scouring, the cooldowns of the Disperse and Mimicry powers will no longer recover faster.

Startling​

While an unarmed teen is Exposed by Scour and for 2 seconds afterwards, they will be Jammed. While an armed teen is Exposed by Scour and for 2 seconds afterwards, their movement speed is increased by 15%.

Slinking​

While Scouring, you can move at 35% of base movement speed. The auras of teens now disappear immediately after Scour is cancelled.

Perks​

Devour Spirit - 4/6/8 Points​

Feasting on teens will cause them to lose Luma at a rate of 2.5/5/7.5% per second.

Formless Insight - 4/5/6 Points​

Tier 1 - While Banished, any station a teen is crafting at will become highlighted.

Tiers 2/3 - While Banished, the speed at which you can move is increased by 30/60% and any station a teen is crafting at will become highlighted.

Mending Malice - 6/8/10 Points​

Teens performing a Healing action within 16/22/28 meters of you for at least 0.7 seconds will be Exposed.

I'mma say it again; this is why they shouldn't have pandered to the gay mafia and danger hairs right out of the fucking gate. Especially that disgusting grandma troon.

This is also why they shouldn't have tried to court streamer trash above people who would have actually played the game. Their deployment strategy from the start was nonsensical. The real tragedy is this probably could have been a really fun and cheesy game with an excellent 80s aesthetic.

It´s guaranteed that any western dev will be chasing after the fucking rainbow.

The devs are hiding behind the whole "we're still in Early Access so there's nothing to worry about because we haven't officially launched" but the writing is on the wall and they can barely get 100-150 players at peak hours for a free 2 play game. They've been quiet for the last couple weeks and there's barely any kind of community left for it. I expect them to quietly cancel the whole thing.

At this point the only way for an assgame to not suck the devs must be russian, chinese or japanese.

It´s guaranteed that any western dev will be chasing after the fucking rainbow.

I think 1 of 2 things needs to happen:

1: The game needs to be developed by devs that actively main killer in asym games. It's that simple. You need people who explicitly understand the flaws of the other games and what needs to be done to make a good one.

Or

2: The game needs to be made a competent AA or AAA game dev. That way when issues creep up they can be addressed in a timely manner and not ignored for years on end for more shekels.

Bonus: they need to actively gatekeep and shut down the cancer that is survivor mains and streamers. These people need to be segregated, not given special treatment, not made to be mods of various social media platforms, and their opinions need to be completely disregarded. The better idea instead of trying to appeal to survivor mains is to reach out to people who don't play asym games at all and get their feedback.

Number 2 is :optimistic: after Evil Dead game and other titles like Total War: Warhammer 3 and Cyberpunk 2077.

The key problem with this game is that their cocktail mix on DbD is retarded and unfun for monster. Giving teens weapons flipped VHS into actually 4 killers and 1 survivor. Which would have been okay if it was intended and built monsters around, but its not. All the monsters have powers built for finding and killing teens much like DbD is, but so much of this game's monster loop is hiding, escaping ambushes and hoping teens waste out their weapons or split up so you have the opportunity to counter. The monster is not invincible, scary, vicious or fun.

I said it a few times before in past pages, but this game is designed for toxic flashlight bully squads from DbD. But those people already have DbD so they don't need to play this game. Meanwhile, all the VHS hype in 2021 was built up by killer mains who wanted a fair alternative after how much of bitch DbD was and got the same but worse experience in VHS.

The game is unfun at its core level and got what it deserved cause nobody likes it.

Hell, at this point I'd settle for an asymmetric game that's developed by someone who just actually gives a shit. If they know how to code well, great, but it's clear that we're only getting more and more garbage from devs more concerned about milking the fuck out of cosmetic shops. Having someone who listens to complaints and acts on them would be a god-send.

I'm sure all 8 people who bother to still stream this game are so grateful to be protected from those mean ol' internet bullies. Game barely broke 200 players this weekend. DbD had over 30k at that same hour, and that was one of its lower points.

I'm a little curfuffled or perhaps keffuffled. They're claiming alt-right diet nazi types are harassing streamers but don't go into specifics. The game tops out at about 150 players at peak hours and that's only for bout 2-3 hours at best. As of moment there are 14 streamers still playing the game for some reason. The top 4 each have between 20-39 viewers. So that's basically the entire community.

Watch as the whole thing was faked and done just so they can salt the Earth of any remaining forums that criticize them.

What the left faking outrage? Oh lordy lord! Say it ain't so.

I wouldn't be surprise if this thread is the only thing on the internet even slightly giving any flak at VHS with how low the player count is.
