VHSfags on youtube

I knew that VHS had a resurgence, especially with the Adjust Your Tracking documentary that came out in 2013. Then it turned into this weird, competitive game of showing off the dumbest, rarest shit for social media clout. I had no idea that people still cared for the format.

On the one hand, there is something satisfying about the chunkiness of a VHS tape. It's a bit like game cartidges, they're just pleasantly tactile to load into the machine with a satisfying ka-clunk. Also, as someone who was a child during the last gasps of the VHS era I have some nostalgia for them.

On the other hand, unlike carts vs discs there is ZERO practical benefit for a tape over a disc, the quality is awful, the things eventually self-destruct and really there's no reason to buy them unless the media is flat-out unavailable on any other format (lots of pretty fun but obscure OVAs fall afoul of this, California Crisis for instance is still VHS-only). The fact there's an incredibly spergy and elitist community around collecting these things is...well, certainly something. It's not even like with something Techmoan might review where you're looking at largely forgotten, incredibly rare, ahead of its time or otherwise interesting technology like those video-vinyls which were so fragile they needed to be loaded into the machine via a slip-cartridge; VHS tapes were fucking everywhere.

That being said, I am partially guilty as my wife and I bought a copy of Jingle All the Way on VHS for 50 cents from a charity store, because A: it was there, B: it was dirt cheap and C: it's the best Christmas movie ever made.

Maybe I live in a more temperate climate, but almost all my tapes still have great quality and look wonderful if played on an authentic Critical Race Theory tv. The big problem is sound, and they can develop harsh pops and unpleasant electric buzzing noise in the background, though I've only encountered one that was truly unwatchable.

Steven Seagal's The Patriot, a thoroughly mediocre movie with practically no fight scenes, is an example of a movie better on VHS. I haven't seen it on DVD so I can't speak for that, but I've tried watching it on Tubi, YouTube, and Vudu, and all versions were stretched and washed out, while my VHS copy isn't stretched (albeit in fullscreen) and the colors are nice and vibrant.

Can confirm that 35-40 year old VHS tapes are guaranteed to go bust sooner or later when played.

Dan sobel got a 40 minute expose from The Leaping Lemur
He is my favorite little league lolcow.

This user has compiled several clips of dan sobel being shitty and stupid online. there are a few extras, but eyes on dan sobel. guy is nutty.

And that part about him making videos of him talking to fictional characters? I know one youtuber who is far worse. Teon T Stevenson Show Time. In particular, I recommend starting out on his Stephane Misbehaves at Eastern Tennessee series. He uses countless fictional characters, an alarming number of children show characters, and has several youtube friends show up. He also has this video making him sound like a pedo with a poop fetish.
