I have friends in this sort of trade (fairly freelance journalism). All of the, have told me seperately that VICEs rep for this kind of stuff is in the fucking gutter because of a couple of incidents in Iraq and Syria where, when guys they had funded the investigative trips of were captured, VICE when contacted denied all knowledge of these people and of their journalist status.

I will be vague out of respect to those i volved, but this ended super badly for a few people. isis are not the only armed force in that part of the world and "I'm a freelance journalist" is a very poor cover if no one will confirm it. Especially the organisation who, uh, paid up for you to go after you pitched the article to them.

I've tried searching the text and checking Vice's Facebook page and I can't find any such post, the alleged screenshot seems to originate from the the_donald subreddit.

Unless anyone has some evidence that this is real I'm calling bullshit.

Although I don't have evidence, they genuinely put that up.

I saw it on either KiA or a Facebook group, went over to vice to archive a page and it just gave me the "oops, sorry" missing page.

I would have been highly sceptical about one of the people who told me that, but I've now heard it enough times from people who sourced it seperately to believe it. The stuff above is the kernel of what I believe to be true, and I was fairly conservative about it.

This kind of journalism is very cheap to produce since the freelancers don't want much money, but a platform for their work. However they also expect the quid pro quo that in return for you publishing their work, you will stand behind them to a reasonable extent. VICE is now known not to do this.

I wouldn't go to Yemen to report on the civil war/sectarian genocide there, knowing there are armed forces of Western governments in that theatre acting with the Saudis, if I knew that my commissioning editor was going to deny all knowledge of me if I was picked up. To western authorities, to whom actual journalists are a fairly big deal and likely to be let alone. Or at least, held for a little while and then given some food and told to piss off because those holding you have determined that you are shitting yourself too badly not to be telling the truth, despite your cock of a 'commissioner'.

(I can't independently source that paragraph above, but like I say, that is one of the incidents I do believe to have occurred.)

Vice's excuse is really stupid. If a newspaper wants to print a retraction they don't go around banging on doors demanding your old papers so they can burn the evidence away. Journalism is useless without the ability to preserve it for future reference. We archive print media so why should internet be any different? Be more careful about what you try to pass off as journalism if you don't want to look bad.
