This is probably the right place put this. Can someone give me recommendations on fun and lighthearted games to try out? I've honestly gotten kind of sick of everything being so serious and important, I just wanna chill out and have some fun with a game. Tonally I'm thinking along the lines of things like the Shantae series and Katamari Damacy, just goofy and enjoyable. I tend to steer away from "comedy" games since they're almost always reddit humour, but I'm open if they're not obnoxious.

Edit: oh, and no weeb shit

West of Loathing and Shadows Over Loathing are comedic games, but they're more alternate reality and newgrounds humour than redditcore. Definitely goofy and silly enough to fit the lighthearted bill

Earth Defense Force 4.1 (although the online might be dead by now on PC). 5 is totally fine too.

Also Elechead, Rayman (3, Origins & Legends) and Shatter

Minecraft Legends is pretty chilled out and laid back. Very much a game where you have to grind down the enemy rather than systematically dismantle them with elite tactics.

Wandering around during the day and gathering for night time base defense is kinda fun.

Psychonauts 2 (and 1, if you haven't played it) sounds exactly right for you

I really liked The Good Life. It's maybe 20% animal crossing except you're a photo journalist like in Dead Rising but there are no zombies. Instead there's a gruesome murder mystery in a a small idyllic town in the english country side where every full moon the inhabitants turns into cats and dogs.

Unravel the mystery of the town and the inhabitants secrets, take pictures of interesting things and the weird stuff the locals do and post them on Not-Instagram for views and money, there's a weekly "get" list for a photo bank with things they want pictures of etc. Plus doing errands/chores/odd jobs for the locals, boozing it up and pissing on things(there's a reasonable explanation for that).
There's a bit of jank to it and you might/will find yourself in a position where you have to grind for money to get new camera equipment or other things you need. That part feels like a microtransaction type of game except there are no microtransactions.
I recommended it to some people that I know and they really liked it, easily put 30-50 hours into it but it's not for everyone.

The game is chill, charming and jank.

as always: https://store.steampowered.com/sale/nextfest

check the past editions, then go by image, hover over them to get a short movie what the game looks like, then install the demo (if it's still up). imo fastest and easiest way to find some games you never heard about (some that would fit the bill: witch knight, wavetale, sumire, super bullet break, a tale for anna, sophia the traveler, tunic, potata, little witch in the woods, giraffe and annika; some might still be unreleased or in early access tho).

I wouldn't rule out weebshit tho since these days you even get western games with that aesthetic, or japanese games going with a western once. even shantae could be could be considered anime-adjacent, and katamari is as weeb as it gets (creator also has a new game out: https://store.steampowered.com/app/702680/Wattam/)

sackboy game is probably pretty chill: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1599660/Sackboy_A_Big_Adventure/
also this just came out: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1698220/Teslagrad_2/

YES!

I knew if I could just persuade someone to give it a chance! It's such an intricate game. Have you been going to Light or Dark in particular or are you playing balanced? What's your favourite hero and team? I initially found both Dr. Spooky and Ghost Rider quite poor - especially the latter. But I changed my position on both over time.

I watch these videos where this guy over thinks Metal Gear Solid games and others. Some of the stuff I kind of agree on. But a lot of it is kind of stretching it. Like he is grasping at straws with some of his takes. Anyway it's interesting stuff to watch in bits and pieces. especially if you are looking to wind down for bed. He calls them video essays so they are kind of long. They aren't for ADHD fags.

Here are some of his videos about MGSV.

What's that? You want a video where someone over things Atomic Heart as well? He has you covered. I kind of agree with him here. That Atomic Hearty isn't some kind of pro Putin or Communism propaganda game.

I think he could have done a bit better with this one. Maybe he will do some more later on. Atomic Heart is pretty crazy.

I found a channel on YouTube that has a bunch of videos from the past. I love these kinds of videos because you can go back in time and see how much better everything was. No man buns ugg boots women walking around in those really tight gym pants like they are actual pants. No one has any funny hair colors facial piercings or tattoos. But the best part is you can see old video game stuff. You can see what it was like back then.

Browsing for video games in 1993

Buy video games at mall in 2002.

Some people camping out for a PS2 in 2000. It's funny because a year or so later a good number of these launch PS2's would stop reading discs. It happened to me. Mine wasn't a launch PS2. I probably got mine a few months after it launched.

These old videos aren't the best quality. They are old SD videos Try watching them on your phone to get a better picture.

Remember this? lol

Anyone else curious for that Redfall game coming out next month? Personally, I'm actually looking forward to it a bit; it is going to have some problems, but I still want to hope that it ends up being at least somewhat fun.

Granted, I'm something of a complete nutcase, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

I presumed it was yet another 4 player PvE game but the in-depth video presentation on the last big Xbox stream got me interested in it because it looks more like an open world action RPG. It's coming out on gamepass so I'll definitely give it a try.

I'm just looking for a good old-fashioned game where it's mankind vs. monsters, that doesn't turn into the same "humans are evil and the real mawnsters!!!1!" bullshit that I've seen. Fo once I'd like to see humanity as the unambiguous good guys; none of this edgy "deconstruction" crap.

I just looked it up on Steam and it looks cringey as shit. A lot of diversity that looks forced. But that's not the only cringe I see. It looks like those other games that came out over the years that were cringey and filled with SJW shit. Like the last Far Cry game the Saints Row reboot and so on.

Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal.

I had the same reaction.
"It's a L4D" - I don't care
"It's an immersive sim" - Now I care

Arkane have been absolute shit at getting across what their last few games actually are supposed to be.
