EverQuest Legends, the officially licensed single player spinoff of EverQuest, goes into beta April 24th, with a targeted release date of July. It will have a buy in and a monthly sub, no Free To Play.

A bit of gameplay footage with the devs talking.

It's still the original EverQuest 1, based on the original 1999 launch data files, but with the 2026 client. The hook is that you will be able to select 3 classes at the same time, and they are adding modern QoL changes such as Korean MMO style gear evolution (Fine Steel Short Swords being merged into a Fine Steel Short Sword +2 or what have you), a difficulty slider, and instanced dungeons. The goal is a casual, solo friendly version of EQ "for those who don't have time to play EQ anymore."

If this sounds somewhat familiar, the private EQ emulator server "The Hero's Journey" had a similar "pick 3 classes" system. They were sued into oblivion when they started trying to monetize their server, which officially goes past what can be allowed. EverQuest Legends is officially licensed and made by people who have been doing other emulated servers (notably, Project1999 and Quarm) for decades.

(However, it's important to note that one of the developers made the server Chainbreaker, which had the mutli-classing thing, which THJ was inspired by. So this isn't "Daybreak sued THJ into oblivion and stole their idea" and more "Daybreak decided to try something new that multiple others have already tried.")

In other news, the "totally not EverQuest" indie MMORPG, Monsters and Memories, had a recent open beta, and might be of interest. Impressions I've heard is it's basically EverQuest 1, 1999 style, but even more autistic.

There has been some recent drama there, as Nick (their head dev and the guy who has been autistically streaming developing the game for years) was forced out by the other two right before the game goes live. "Hey thanks for making the product for us, now fuck off." Truly, they are brining back the spirit of late 90s gaming.

There's also a "totally not the Hero's Journey" indie MMORPG that was just announced by the THJ team, "Hollowed Oath."

Which is focusing on the "pick 3 classes" thing.

It's weird, we seem to be entering this era where tech and devtools are to the point that even indie studios can make MMORPGs, but the AAA companies that SHOULD be are so DEI-infested and Risk adverse they can't do anything other than remake Rust/Fortnite/Minecraft over and over again and try to get us to pay to skip boring shit they put into the game to get us to pay to skip it.

Hell, the Project Gorgon team was two people (and one of them died of cancer mid-development) and they were able to release their Asheron's Call 2 clone:

The end of California centric game studios draws near
Given that all the lumenjournoscum have thrown their weight behind these western studios one can only hope :optimistic: that they die with them. The east seems uninterested in courting these worthless middlemen,

Totally random but some really high dude on my friends list joined a fortnite game mid match with my friend who had the tung tung skin on and said “are you a cinnamon stick” and you could hear his controller audibly fall to the ground and we lost our shit laughing
RIP btw, killed by WOKE (probably)

The archery/shooting contest minigames are severely overtuned even after a "nerf" and are easily the hardest content in the entire game, bordering on impossible.
I had to switch to M+KB just to do them. Good luck to anyone stuck on controller for that.

I've basically set them aside until the inevitable nerf or mod to make them less unbearable. Not like the game is lacking for shit to do in the meantime.

isnt staisfactory is less autistic 3d factorio knock off?
It's less-autistic in the sense that the developers don't have the power level to understand the design purpose behind all the shit they were ripping off from Factorio, so it has a shitty flow and wastes your time a bunch with a dogshit tech tree (a common issue with Factorio knockoffs), thus it's basically the "comfy" busywork equivalent for cretins and women who'd go "ew, 2D" upon seeing Factorio.
But now Factorio games are like an actual genre so you can't really rip on it as much for that as you used to be able to. So it's alright, I guess.

That said I've never even noticed the character model is female. It's some generic space engineer dude in a generic space engineer suit, who the fuck is noticing titties when there's a factory to build.

speaking of "cozy" games
fucking hate them, for some reason they all looks the same, they are boring as shit "on purpose", and theres always a tranny involved in some way
and no stardew valley isnt a cozy game despite of what trannies call it.

Continuing my puzzle game streak I've played through Murder At The Birch Tree Theater

  • A Golden Idol clone(developer himself got some help and was very much inspired by golden idol and its devs), you get a bunch of dioramas depicting some situation, you can inspect certain objects and get names/verbs/adjectives from said objects, try to piece together the details of what happened. Then you switch to a solving panel where a paragraph with lots of blanks and you're expected to slot in the words you've discovered to fill the description of the details
  • Much like the other Golden Idol clone I've recently played Confidential Killings, the game's very easy on account of it not really having any kind of supernatural element. The killings are often very straight forward with the first deduction you arrive at more often than not ending up as the correct one, no red herrings or recontextualizing clues. Not to say Golden Idol was the Dark Souls of Puzzle Games™ but it often left me sounding off my sister with whom I play these games to try and make the version of events make sense. Here it more or less gets spelled out immediately and the actual solving part feels like a formality.
  • Unlike Confidential Killings and Golden Idol the game tries to some limited degree to have puzzles within the dioramas itself. A locked diary somewhere that needs you to piece together the lock-word for. A keypad for which you have to find the code to. It's all on the really easy side but it lets you get a bit engaged in each level.
  • The game being a one man dev project is a bit lacking QoL wise. While it's too easy to require a hint system, there's a couple of issues I have with it.
    • There's no alternate solution to anything so while you may have gotten the details right you'd still end up getting stuck on the solving panel because you put in "Shot the Gun" instead of "Shot the Body/Corpse".
    • Bit of an annoyance hunting down a stray word at the end of a level because not everything is highlighted well outside of the text, if you examined an item and didn't get all of its words you'll end up looking at everything again to try and find it.
    • Just moving between the screens is a bit finnicky, because the movement arrows aren't at the exact edges of the screen and while there's a lot of dead space at the edges the game won't let you switch screens by simply clicking at the edge of a screen.
  • Now the positives. The game is set entirely in the eponymous Birch Tree Theater, starring a limited cast of characters with each of the ten levels taking place during some theater production where something has gone wrong. The developer clearly is passionate or at least interested in stagework because there's a bit of care and detail put into the stagework. Music sheets with each play's music, some limited lyrics, diagrams of stagehand work and whatnot. It's all fluff and superficial detail but it makes you enjoy the levels more.
  • I love the music. It's all piano work that's themed around each play. As I mention later I wish it came with accompanying vocal tracks because I'd love to hear some of the lyrics in the level music sheets sung but even as just instrumental work it was a real joy hearing the music both ingame and out of it.
  • Bit of props to the story that ends on a fairly downer note, a colossal dickhead character is dead but he also comes out of it looking like a virtuous martyr who was trying to do the right thing and ultimately gets away scott free with everything.

All in all the game left me positive, and having bought the soundtrack I'm really enjoying listening to it in isolation even though I really wish they went the extra mile and had vocal tracks for each level's theater performance. But it's also a one man developer's first go and what's there is already really good in my opinion so I'll let it slide.
Game managed to get some very limited voice acting from BrentalFloss and a bunch of theatre guys, I think it may have been a kickstarter but I'm unsure.

I am slowly running out of patience with the difficulty in puzzle games seemingly being limited to Sokoban and Sokoban adjacent games though.
I wish I could play one of those deduction Obra dinn/Golden Idol games that's based entirely around being difficult as shit and having you put your brain through the wringer trying to figure out what the hell's going on. The Golden Idol DLCs of the first game came slightly close to that but sadly difficulty seems extremely tricky to get right in these type of games, especially since there's no real fail state and you could if so inclined just mix and match words until you get to the right solution.

We've never had less time or reason to play a time-demanding mmorpg, and then these mfers just keep making the most demanding of the kind. Yeah sure I'll slave through work for 8 hours to go home and grind for 4 hours to complete 2 quests, my guild completely devoid of chatting cause they're all on Discord.

Yes it is, it's the fucking archetype.
"Cozy" (though not in the exact sense I used it) has come to mean an actual genre of shit aimed at Sims females that isn't The Sims. There's a whole limp-ass subculture of "cozytubers" or whatever that play nothing but Stardew knockoffs (definitely not Harvest Moon knockoffs, that game was doing something original) and take kickbacks from the korean developers of Stardew knockoffs. That's why they all look the same. They're competing for a very specific demographic that just wants to throw turnips at bitches forever.

Liking games unironically in Anno Domini MMXXVI is suffering. Can’t talk about games here because everyone hateposts about games. Can’t talk on /v/ because everyone just posts porn and X screencaps. Can’t talk on Reddit because I have to respect xir’s she-nis and protest in support of third worlders. Can’t talk on Steam because people there are asylum runaways. Can’t post on a game forum because they all died. Can’t post on Discord because everyone’s trying to groom minors or post porn. I guess playing video games alone as an old millennial is my fate.

You're not wrong but posting about it anyways to see if someone will bite doesn't hurt. I was posting fairly positively about Crimson Desert here. I always enjoy asking the mega-haters what games they actually enjoy.

Gamers have definitely gotten a bit too cynical.

If the Metal Gear games came out today I can virtually guarantee everyone would shit all over the goofy elements complaining that it was breaking the immersion in their super series stealth game.

Satisfactory and Factorio
My brother is still the only person I know IRL who has launched a rocket in Factorio, but he's fully moved over to Satisfsctory when he's in the mood for a Factory game. His reasoning pretty much confirms what you're saying though: Satisfactory has no real combat, and the first person view makes it more about immersion, so it is effectively "casual factorio".

Liking games unironically in Anno Domini MMXXVI is suffering
I know the feeling, I've had basically all the same experiences you listed there. I recently did another of my occasional "internet nomad" moods where I just try to find new websites and forums and chat programs - and everywhere I found is either dead, dying, full of insufferable retards, or just festering grounds for haters who can't enjoy any-fuckin'-thing and never wanna hear any positivity.

I want to make some kind of thing where people can talk about how they ENJOY media and recommend and share shit - stuff from any medium, not just gaming, and including tangential stuff e.g. like what you see in the "cool game box art" thread here. Someone recommended I read a horror novel a while ago and it's given me great material for comparing it with a couple horror games in a video some time.

However, I don't have confidence that I'm competent enough to create that place, and there's the unfortunate reality that most online chat things are full of terminally online politifags, creepy cunts, or 20 year olds who only communicate in ebonics and hugbox smalltalk and porn """memes""". I've seen the barest little bit of what happens in private chats even here on KF and I just don't wanna be near that shit.

Just post, nigger. Half the site act like fucking robots who will for some reason die on the hill of believing some speculative fiction a random retard made up about a completely imaginary troon character on page 2 of a thread eight months before release, and another 45% of users are fucking cowards who don't want to contradict the groupthink. Who cares what these people think? I play everything blind and just post my actual opinions regardless and there's almost always at least a couple dudes who show up to have a real conversation, once someone goes against the flow.

Counterpoint: I have maybe an hour of time at most to post and reply to people on an average day and I’d rather not spend that time fighting someone or a group of people about something I don’t have any interest in arguing. I just want to talk about games I like.
