Culture Vienna Blows Nearly $2 Million On The Ugliest Fountain You’ve Ever Seen - Ugly is beautiful bigots!

The city of Vienna, Austria, unveiled a 1.8 million euro ($1.9 million) fountain on Oct. 23 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the city’s modern water system, Heute reported.

The city initially thought the project would cost 2.1 million euros, but the fountain, which includes 33 abstract humanoid figures, came in under budget, Heute reported.

Viennese mayor Michael Ludwig and Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen attended the opening ceremony. “150 years ago, the water pipe brought the best quality drinking water to us from the Lower Austrian Alps. The day marks Vienna’s liberation from water shortages and epidemics such as cholera,” Ludwig tweeted in German.



“The name of the anniversary fountain ‘WirWasser’ [‘WeWater’ in English] stands for the responsibility that society bears for water. The structurally very demanding fountain was built in just eight months,” wrote Ludwig.



Critics slammed the project as an unnecessary “luxury fountain,” Heute reported.

Others took issue with the fountain’s design. “Human language has no words to describe how hideously ugly this is,” one user posted in German, while another asked if the fountain was “surrounded by aliens.”

How much do you want to bet it's just about budget.

In many countries, the city budget is going to be reduced if it goes unspent.

That's why so many European cities will splurge on new roundabouts, on fountains or on "cultural grants" to any theatre group with enough bums to produce something.

You could argue it does, in some ways, stimulate local economy. But in truth, it's a farce. These people have more money than they can use and just end throwing it away so they don't get less next year. Your money.

Indeed it is
Vienna used to be an awesome city just 20-30 years ago. Spent quite a bit of my youth there. Incredibly clean and politely European, safe etc.
When I revisited a few years ago there were migrants everywhere and even near the historical posh center there were Donner Kebab "shops" in some small trailer. Streets were dirty and no longer maintained, sometimes with holes in the asphalt that I could've sworn this was Bucharest or Iasi, not the famed Wien.

It still has. Vienna lives from tourism. The modern art shit is mostly far away from the historical centre and the suburbs, where the tourists are.
A lot of Vienna was bombed to rubble by the allies, everything destroyed was restored to it's original form.
The only modern building in the inner city is a shitty building covered in mirrors opposite of the cathedral.

Now there's some public art that accurately reflects the decline of Western Civilization. Talk about a life denying abstract aesthetic that says "Humans are just slapped together meat blob dolls. Staring blankly off into space, ignoring each other, with comical pointy turds atop some of their heads. There is nothing beautiful, dignified, or divine about them anymore."

So a bunch of bureaucrats looked at the drawings and approved that? Jeebus. Granted, a grand old school figurative tableau would have been costly. But they could have simply put a nicely patterned stone wall around the basin that people could sit on, hired a fountain designer to make the water movement interesting, and called it a day.

As it is, note that no one is getting near the water there. Not without tripping over all kinds of appendages, some of which look like stone cocks with genital warts. Or having to lean over fat stone ass cheeks. Or a bird figure with a pointy beak. It's grotesque and inhospitable. So it also says "We can't have nice old school fountains where humans can sit and take a load off their feet because some retard or another will get in the water. And we can't have that." Meanwhile, the water arcs are thin and barely visible. Piss streams.

I hope some locals with sledge hammers come and pay it a visit during the night. That is an abomination. An insult.
