Assuming it happened how Vincent described it, getting suffocated is not a very nice feeling and he was probably in panic mode rather than fight mode, you can easily die in situations like this.

Should probably also add that he likely didn't expect it to get violent considering there was no reason for it to get violent, so he wouldn't have had chance to fight back.
