In Vinny's case this is true.
He's said on occasion that he breaks even with his music, which he claims to be ok with.
 
I hate Vinny's habit of talking about the technical details of games during streams. No, I don't care about how well they pulled off the creation of suspense. The game's scary, keep it at that. Overdivulging in these details kills the stream.

It is probably his way of putting his English degree to good use and another way of getting his ego stroked thoroughly by sounding like an intellectual.

Not to mention his bad habit of grasping little to half the context regarding news which leads to his pretentiousness sometimes. Doesn't help that he gets his fact checking from chat feeding him conflicting info. Him giving high praise to games he hasn't played himself grinds my gears a little, which he did with Sin and Punishment 64.
No "I heard/saw", flatout "That's a phenominal game", then omits it from his list of games he's played/beaten.

Along with living in a studio apartment in a low cost-of-living area as others have pointed out, Joel said in an AMA 9 years ago that he does work designing artwork and posters for local metal bands, and takes part-time jobs when he needs extra income:

So the answer is essentially a combination of freelance art, occasionally picking up jobs, living in a low cost-of-living area, and being careful with money outside of his occasional trips.
 
Has probably already been said before in the thread but the only thing I genuinely cannot stand is when Vinny is clearly playing a game he doesn't want to simply because so many people asked him too. You can tell when this happens almost every time because he'll always do nothing but bitch and moan the entire time and sometimes even have some kind of smug superiority for not enjoying said game? Like, Vinny. If you don't like the game, don't fucking play it. It's not even entertaining it's just grating.

Though it is pretty funny when for instance it's obvious because he fucking sucks at the game in question like on his very first Master Chief Collection stream where he plays Halo 1 for like 5 minutes and sucks complete ass at it while bitching about everything DSP style. But that's only funny in isolation, not when it's the entire stream. Just like how I can only stomach DSP's whining in small doses before I have to watch something else.

EDIT: It's even more annoying when he tries to frame it like it's the game's fault that he doesn't like it in the cases where he just sucks at the game. I'm shit at video games too, I don't pretend otherwise but most of the time it's my fault rather than the game's. I don't blame the game for my own incompetence. I think it reminds me of DSP which is why it annoys me so much when he does it.

On the subject of my previous post, I can't lie. I am genuinely surprised he has never caved and played Undertale. I don't even care about Undertale, it just surprises me considering all of the other times he caved and forced himself to play games just because so many people bitched at him to do it.

I don't want him to though because we all know he'd probably just complain the entire time like usual when he plays a game he doesn't want to.
Vinny is at his least entertaining when he's genuinely not enjoying himself. Whenever he starts bitching and moaning I almost always just leave.
I don't even know why people continue to demand he play games since we've already seen the result multiple times. Again, Vinny is at his least entertaining when he's just bitching about nothing.

The closest he's ever gotten is the time he threw up a chunk of gameplay on youtube with a fake video part number to fuck with everyone asking him to play it all the time.
