As someone who's been watching Joel and Vinny's stuff for a little bit over 6 years, I have to say that the changes are undeniable when it comes to their fanbase, especially the chat. Back then, it wasn't much of an issue to say certain things – whether they were morally questionable or edgy. This could have multiple reasons, one of them obviously being that Vinny himself used to create threads on /v/ and was a regular chong user, same goes for Joel (who still referenced /a/ here and there, but hasn't since 2015 or so).

Nowadays, though (especially in Joel's chat) it's nearly impossible to have a valid discussion in the offstream AND onstream chat which doesn't result in le epic thicc and cum memes or "respect everyone!"/trans rights. LeonDragonCat may be the most annoying moderators in Joel's chat I've ever seen, dude tells people to stop talking when it's sexual or about a real world event but if someone dares to criticize the dragon furry art he constantly posts, they're banned or "mean bullies". The art, the fan games... sometimes it's painfully obvious that they put up an act of liking it all, and part of that act kind of crumbled down when Vinny played the Wario Ware fan game a month or so ago and it was just too (excuse that word) "cringeworthy" to handle, even for him.

Aside from the chat, I don't think Joel and Vinny have changed that much. Joel simply went through puberty and isn't shouting satanistic stuff or referencing oldschool hentai anymore and Vinny just got... older. He's pretty calm now and has every right to be, considering he finally doesn't have to work soul crushing jobs anymore and can live off his streaming career.

Interestingly, I found that Vinny's replies to personal emails are always very well thought out, he makes sure to answer them professionally even if it's criticism and it's generally pleasant (I've had a few exchanges with him over the years). But Joel, he's short with them and always comes off passive aggressive and then that's pretty much it. It's rare to hear back from him. I love the guy, and it's a shame he only ever reads my chat messages that could be considered rude on stream. However, I'm legitimately worried about Joel's... self-hatred? I don't know, the thing about "I hate Sweden", "Oh my god look at this Swede" etc. has never been this apparent on stream, it's like he's now in a constant dick sucking mode for the USA which wasn't always like that. Sure, he's always had a thing for America, mostly ironically back then, but now it's slightly painful.

TLDR; Love Joel & Vinny, but their fanbase is unbearable these days. On a side note, make sure to tune in to this year's charity stream on the 19th, it'll probably be managed by Hootey again so the money's actually going where it belongs.

To be fair, if I lived in CURRENT YEAR Sweden I'd probably hate being swedish too. It also cracks me up when he mocks the OTT swedish accent, though jokes aside I hope he doesn't actually hate himself. Sweden has somehow produced a surprising amount of cool people.

I hope so, but I know "___ SAYS TRANS RIGHTS UWU" so-called art will likely shit up the streams. (The theme is farm/SDV, but you know how those types love to shove their fetish politics in everything) And like I said before sooner or later Vinny will likely be forced to have charity money go to some scammy "trans kids helpline uwu"

And speaking of Joel, but when he makes fun of both the US and Sweedsits hilarious. I don't remember what video it was where he spends half the time saying "YOU THINK YER FUNNY HUH?!" "I am just a sweedish boy...p-please don't be yeling at meee"

Found a vid where that moment is

"I no desicrate my name Jewell"

I have a lot to say, so this is gonna be a long one. I will not apologize.

I talked a lot about this before, but most likely, that change is just a "keeping up with the culture" thing. Morally questionable commentary wasn't just tolerated back in the day, it was often expected or even encouraged. But keep in mind the numbers they're pulling now, and the cash that comes with it - to jeopardize that income by trying to maintain the same dated humor a la DSP would be nothing short of complete buffoonery.

The art, the fan games... sometimes it's painfully obvious that they put up an act of liking it all, and part of that act kind of crumbled down when Vinny played the Wario Ware fan game a month or so ago and it was just too (excuse that word) "cringeworthy" to handle, even for him.

Agree. It's really tough to watch them slog through such low quality fan works, but that's part of the trade you make when you become a popular figure - people are gonna start submitting things for your approval, and not all of it is gonna be good. I'm thinking of Joel's Doom WAD contest in particular - most of the time, he seemed to be in pure agony over how bad most of the WADs were, and yet he always dug up some compliment to give them, no matter how poor their quality was. It was kind of admirable, but in a sad way.

Aside from the chat, I don't think Joel and Vinny have changed that much. While Vinny has definitely lost some of his spark - which, like you said, is just a natural consequence of getting older and probably some added disillusionment with streaming - I actually think Joel is a lot funnier now, especially since he stopped being such an obnoxious edgelord. He was definitely still funny in his teenage years, and I do miss some of the spontaneity that he had when he was younger, but after a while, he would always take it too far and cross over the line into annoying.

I linked the video earlier in the thread, but this old GTA stream is a prime example of how his old streaming style could become overwhelming really fast, especially when you can tell that the other streamers (read: Vinny) are getting fed up with him, too. His drunken CSGO stream with Vinny, while legendary, is another good one - you can hear Vinny's clear irritation with him during the "Obi-Wan Alcohol" moment around 5:40, and even a little before it.

Interestingly, I found that Vinny's replies to personal emails are always very well thought out, he makes sure to answer them professionally even if it's criticism and it's generally pleasant (I've had a few exchanges with him over the years). I've always found that particularly interesting about Joel and Vinny. People tend to view Joel as more approachable and aggressively friendly, while Vinny is seen as more apathetic, but I feel like in reality, it's the opposite. Joel has always been a tragedy when it comes to having any semblance of professionalism, and that means his interactions with fans tend to be really cutting and terse, to get it over with as soon as possible. In fairness, that's what a lot of people find appealing about him - that he's not "fake" - but it also means his real feelings about his fans come out really easily, and they're usually not positive ones.

Vinny is a little more thoughtful, especially nowadays - he was a lot snappier and kind of a dick back in the day - so he manages to maintain a pretty professional and polite rapport with fans that he interacts with. The incident where a fan spotted him eating in public and joined in without an invitation comes to mind - he apparently took it in stride, even though it must've been really upsetting and kind of nightmarish for someone as private as him. So it's fascinating to think about how they're both perceived vs. the reality of how they approach fan interaction.

Most fanbases go to shit eventually, but it's extra hard on Joel and Vinny due to the fact that their original fanbase and their newer fans don't mesh in the slightest, and they've gotten so big that they can't handle it personally anymore. It's a lost cause no matter what they do, which is probably a big part of why they both seem to be kind of going through the motions with their streams in recent days.

(Not quoting because it's a pain to clean this shit up on mobile.)

Going to have to disagree with Joel seeming to go through the motions, though I don't watch Vinny anymore so I can't comment there. While Joel has his off nights (the stream earlier was fucking boring, but it wasn't really any fault of his, more that the Pokemon thing was one note as fuck and the Nork OS was just nothing), some of his recent streams have been some of the best shit he's ever put out. OpenRCT2, classic bootlegs, and the Madness streams will always be classic, but Oblivion, San Andreas, Shenmue, and the recent Hardcore Fridays have been incredible. However, you can definitely tell when he's not into something, and since he's so transparent it usually ends up killing the stream completely. Sometimes literally, because when Joel runs out of steam, it's goes from a fun Swedish road trip to Hell Climb Pillar real fast.

I don't think Joel is the one to worry about between him and Vinny, though. He travels the world semi-regularly, has a girlfriend, several close friends he hangs out with, plays killer metal with a Floridian, and still plays a ton of vidya off-stream to boot. I know Vinny has his band too, but he always just seemed miserable when I watched him, unless he was enraptured by a game he really loved.

Of course, I didn't watch any of these guys waaaaay back when, so I can't talk about the really old stuff.

Agree. His San Andreas and Oblivion streams are some of my favorite streams of his. They're honestly right up there in terms of quality with some of his old classics, like Facade and the Sims destruction streams, and the Hardcore Friday where he played the Mario lost levels was probably his best stream of that year.

However, you can definitely tell when he's not into something, and since he's so transparent it usually ends up killing the stream completely. Sometimes literally, because when Joel runs out of steam, it's goes from a fun Swedish road trip to Hell Climb Pillar real fast.

HARD agree. This is more what I meant by "going through the motions," in the sense that he'll slog through an awful game, even if he's visibly not enjoying it - and that's not something that Younger Joel would have bothered doing. Younger Joel was quick to drop something if it bored him, and he was even quicker to fuck up a game by deliberately playing it wrong/inserting dumb memes if he thought it wasn't worth doing the right way (again, see Facade).

But with the way he approaches streaming now, they can become downright painful, especially if he crosses the line from merely bored into straight up frustrated. Once he starts having a lot of difficulty with a game, you can always feel him getting more and more irritated, and once he gets like that, he's quick to take it out on chat (although, in fairness, it's usually because they're mocking him for being stupid/berating him for not doing it successfully). I didn't get to witness it myself, but according to a few stories I've heard floating around, the reason Joel has never uploaded the third and final part of his Alien Isolation stream to Fullsauce is because, at one point, he had some serious difficulty with a puzzle and absolutely flipped out on chat for giving him shit for it.

I've seen him do things like that in other streams too, like when he got annoyed with the mineshaft area in Down Under Dan and started getting really snippy with chat any time they made a suggestion for where he should go. That's another thing I mean by Joel having no semblance of professionalism - Vinny might be a jaded doomer, but I can't think of any recent cases of him going after his fans like that. Joel is definitely the funnier of the two, and probably the more natural entertainer, but his inability to filter himself can definitely make a stream go south really fucking quick.

I was there when that happened, and yeah, chatango went wild – so did Joel. There's not much to it, at least not as much as it's made out to be.
It was basically something like this:
Joel: "Well, how the fuck do I solve it then, chat?!"
Chat: "Not being stupid helps/try harder retards/ >sucking at baby survival horror lol"
Joel: "Haha, you guys think you're really funny but try to solve this shit yourselves"
Chat: "Well, I did/It's not that hard, Joel. Calm down."
Joel: "No you calm the fuck down you pretentious fuck, it's bad enough when people complain about how I play games but when they call me stupid then I don't even know why I stream anymore"
etc, etc. Then he eventually got it with the help of chat and the rest is history, art segment right after which he never finished because a few people kept going on about his fuck up.

has a girlfriend

Eh, does he? I remember him having one in 2015 and everything went South pretty quick, he invited her to do a co-op stream of Turtles in Time for the SNES and shortly after they broke up. She really hurt Joel considering he wasn't streaming for about a week afterward and started his first stream after that event with "breakups fucking suck" (I still remember that line vividly because it definitely hit home with his tone of voice). I'm pretty sure the Turtles in Time Co-Op has been uploaded on YouTube and then became unlisted, so the link may still be floating around. It wasn't a bad stream as his girlfriend was pretty decent at it and her English was rather fluent. Joel still used to like his ex girlfriend's stuff on Twitter here and there, she was one of those skinny girls with short hair, glasses and a love for cats – but I don't think he's done so since 2016-ish.

He's been striking me as, uh... not as "straight" as he used to be anymore.

Gachimuchi is about beautiful manly love and there's nothing gay about it you fucking fag.

More seriously, yes, he went to Australia with her, unless he just has a random close female friend he travels to foreign countries with.

Oh, the Australian girl is a female MOD from his chat.

That's about what I imagined. That seems to echo the Down Under Dan stream, but to a more intense degree, since his irritation was obviously targeted at the admittedly garbage mineshaft section, and the snide comments he made at chat were more snarky than anything else. I do find moments like that interesting, though, when a streamer lashes out at their own audience - it's fascinating to see a creator rage against a group of people that basically constitute their clientele, and in a lot of cases, they get away with it. I've been slacking on the Joel streams lately, but have there been other cases where he or Vinny got pissy with chat like this?

He's been striking me as, uh... not as "straight" as he used to be anymore.

Obligatory Gachi joke. You can't lurk on /a/ without picking up a few homoerotic quirks, after all.

In all seriousness, though, I think he's been doing that on purpose. A little while ago he ended a stream (I forget which one, sadly) by saying that he had to go to lunch with someone, and when chat suggested that it was a girlfriend, his reaction was so incredulous. I remember it almost verbatim - he said, "Girlfriend? Man, you're new to this stream." Now knowing about his bad breakup around 2015 (I wasn't watching as actively during that time), that sort of contextualizes his reaction - even if he did have a girlfriend, I think he's learned his lesson enough to not make it public.

His mod Jolyene (spelling?) is a good example. A lot of people speculated that they were dating, and she's even shown up in his streams before - I think she was the girl who he brought in during his Earthbound streams to voice Mr. Saturn - but he's been pretty adamant that that's not the case. Once when someone asked, he reacted in a pretty level-headed way, saying, "Nah, it's not like that," but another time, he brushed it off by getting jokingly offended, saying, "I have standards!" So he might have one, for all we know, but it seems that in recent years, he's taken a cue from Vinny and decided to keep those kinds of things as private as he can, or at the very least, not to confirm people's suspicions.

Supposedly it's this video (notice that it's a *Reuploaded*)
There was a comment by the Fullsauce channel itself that are mentioned here but is removed now. However you can find said comment here, in one of the many Faux-Youtube site that leeches video and comment from YT (Archive)

Why do gay furries gravitate to Vinny?
It's sad people can't even talk about their relationships in a casual way in public because fans can go apeshit like that but I'm glad he knows better to protect his privacy, and his girlfriend. Her name though, inb4 they make little JoJos.
Isn't Joel's last name Johanneson (or whatever gay Swede spelling), making him a JoJo?
I've been slacking on the Joel streams lately, but have there been other cases where he or Vinny got pissy with chat like this?
He'll get fed up and say, "You fucking do it then, chat!" when the "lol just do it" gets to him, but nothing worth scrubbing or out of the ordinary for Joel's usual sped level.

Isn't Joel's last name Johanneson (or whatever gay Swede spelling), making him a JoJo?

Many people believe that, but he said that isn't true. And honestly, I believe he's saying the truth. You'd at least have to find something if you search for Joel Johannson, but you don't. Most likely just a thing that was being made up as time went by, which isn't an unusual thing to happen. But then again, Joel tends to lie a lot. Back in 2014, he told us that he dropped out of high school because of bullying and took on a job in a factory for a while (logistics, stacking things with a forklift) until he was able to live off of his YouTube and Stream career. It was a really sincere moment, and you could hear thankfullness in his voice. However, when someone asks these days, he's saying "naaah, I went to college and do this on the side " – but never answers what he studies/studied or works as. It's plain obvious he's neither working a second job nor going to any college with that kind of I-do-what-I-want-when-I-want-schedule. Which isn't a bad thing. And I can sort of understand why he's not being as honest anymore, now where his audience has grown.

Why do gay furries gravitate to Vinny?

Ehh, some streams were seemingly inviting to the furry audience, but most of it is probably due to the fact a lot of them are quite bad at... common sense? I remember Vinny streaming furry stuff ironically way back then, nothing over the top, but the furries who joined the chat thought it's welcoming. There was also that instant where Vinny commented on a charity Tweet last year that was written by a furry (I believe it was one of his MODs), if I recall he said something like "Thank god I didn't write that." but deleted it, probably realizing that this is his audience now.

I don't know. These days Vinesauce chat, in particular Joel's has become a safe space for furries, mentally ill NEETs and """"""""""""""""artists"""""""""""""""" (NEETs who take commissions but never get any, their artistic value being the same as the random drawings of a 9 year old). For real, I can't join it without seeing someone bitching about their daddy issues, how life is so bad because [insert generic first world gender or Nintendo problem], random le funny sex jokes or epic ancient Joel memes.

Now knowing about his bad breakup around 2015 (I wasn't watching as actively during that time), that sort of contextualizes his reaction - even if he did have a girlfriend, I think he's learned his lesson enough to not make it public.

It was quite intriguing to experience Joel being in love back then. He was less cynical, less edgy and his streams were terribly short for a while (which is understandable), but his sense of humor suffered. But yeah, she really broke his heart. Which is awkward. I always imagined some metal chick would break his heart, but no. Just some random 20-something cat lady. Joel could have done better honestly. He's not a bad looking guy at all, not many people can pull off the bald look he's rocking these days.

This is a common thing with creators that I've noticed. You can really tell when they've had something major happen in their lives, because it shows in their material, and not always for the better. Even Vinny seems to have gone through this, but in reverse - as time goes on, he seems to have gotten more and more depressed, and while his jokes have always been the self-deprecating kind, it feels barely comedic at this point. He's still funny, but his sense of humor has definitely taken a turn for the darker, to the point that it's just sad sometimes.

Back in 2014, he told us that he dropped out of high school because of bullying and took on a job in a factory for a while (logistics, stacking things with a forklift) until he was able to live off of his YouTube and Stream career. However, when someone asks these days, he's saying "naaah, I went to college and do this on the side " – but never answers what he studies/studied or works as.

That explains so much. I would get so confused during more recent streams when he would mention having gone to college, because I distinctly recalled him having worked some crap day job for a while (and this Drunk Dark Souls highlight from 2013 confirms it - around 0:40, he specifically states that he has work the next day, not school). It's also entirely possible that he did start taking individual classes, or maybe went to college online so as to not interfere with his streaming, but that would have come later on.

It is a little bit strange to see him in particular taking a step back and being a bit more vague about his life, when this is the same guy who would drop personal stories at random times, just based on his whims. But I think he's finally come to understand that he's not doing streams on vinesaucevidya with 50 people in Chatango watching him anymore - now, he's pulling thousands every night, and the information he shares will be remembered and, if applicable, used against him.

I always wonder how streamers like him and Vinny feel about it when their popularity grows - do you think they miss the old days, when they could actually connect with people in chat because of how few people there were, and when they could basically say whatever they wanted and get away with it every time? Or do you think they prefer it now, where there's distance between themselves and "Chat" (because now Chat is just an entity on its own, not really a mass of people), and they can't say as much crazy stuff, but they're reaching a much wider audience and making good money? It must be different for everyone, but I'm always curious about that.
