I just noticed Spike Chunsoft has a 40th anniversary sale on Steam. If you're interested in actually buying some fun titles like the Somnium Files, Nonary Games, Sci-Adv series or you like Danganronpa, best time to check it out. Ends on 30th of this month.
I did play some of what I mentioned, as an aside. Maybe some other day I will find it within myself to sperg about a few of these titles.

I bought Steins;Gate and the Danganronpa trilogy. Hoping that I can get enough time to play them
 
Happy 21st anniversary to Fate/ stay night. The game can officially drink and buy a handgun now lmao.
 
Just finished chapter one of ChuSingura46+1 S.

Reminds me of the chapter in Muv-Luv Unlimited where they have to put down a rebellion and the concept of honor and sacrifice constantly runs under the day to day of what the story is doing.

The only problems I have so far is that the music isn't good enough to keep up with the quality of the story most of the time and the translation has some weird honorifics inserted into it that tell me someone either royally screwed up keeping some MTL mistakes in there or they went super literal.

There is no "Ms." or "Lady", only "Mr". So you'll see obviously female characters referred to as "Mr. so and so" right alongside actual male characters. I'm assuming it's because the translation went super literal with trying to carry over the concept of applying a generic title to someone with prestige.

You get used to it but it's still jarring at first.

Also, the battle scenes are okay but nothing on the level of other action VNs like Tokyo Necro. I wish every VN had the budget and ambition to implement what Nitro+ did there, but whatever, I'm just happy there's a good epic action adventure VN to enjoy in ChuSingura so beggars can't be choosers.

Overall though it's pretty good. The twist at the end of the first chapter is compelling and the story is well told. Totally worth the price and I'm interested to start making my way through the rest of the chapters.
 
Finished Far Away and I very well will give it the grade of Kino. Absolutely one of the best VNs experiences I ever had.

If I need to compare it to anything, it would probably be Baccano! (which probably only the older animefags here know). It's basically a 1900's era mafiosos and middle of industrialization age pulp. We play through the lens of a girl in a free city surrounded by stronger countries with its own issues of history, corruption and internal and external power struggles (think Singapore or Taiwan). By the choices we make the girl can go through a lot of paths - a cop, gangster, detective and it follows through couple of key events. There are a lot of choices and it actually makes it work by the choices being rational, almost always logical and the story progresses according to them in a way that makes sense.

I really can't state how well the the paths in it are. Rarely I felt like I'm just repeating the same events, and every route feels like it adds something to the story that makes everything mesh together. Some moments in one route hit incredibly hard in another. The routes themselves play with tone, some are more light hearted, but all of them (except one) are never grim (and even that one has some levity).

Character wise it's fantastic, every route will have its own main companion to the heroine, and she is usually left more as an observer than taking the spotlight which both adds to the variety and prevents her becoming mary sue, as her abilities always stay in the realm of reason. All the characters in the game are fun to see, feel like they belong and have their own reasons for their actions, including the villains. It's just fun to have a media work where people act in a sane way. For example, no one will hunt down the heroine when it's no longer necessary.

Art wise it's good, but not excellent, the normal sprites are fine and the cgs sometime come out as too much of a visual change. The dubbing sounds good with mandarin not being too offensive for the ears. Translation is decent, there are occasional memes, but they are relegated to humorous scenes and characters so they don't break the tone. I don't know how many are done by the translation team since sometimes the dub is the exact case as in the sub.

Only issues is that there are load times for god forsaken reasons and no skip forward options which are pretty annoying when replaying routes. But those are minor and I hope the sequel gets made.

I'll play MiSide as a pallete cleanser and then its time for the conclusion of Muv Luv.
 
So, Raging Loop extra content, turns out there was a lot more meat than I expected

Fort he most part I enjoyed all of the extra content and am looking forward to DMLC. I do think too much of the "deepest lore" was hidden in the extras and Revelation mode (we suddenly now have the equivalent of mutants with their funky name that I can't even remember and now everything is reality kind of warping around Haruaki's conjectures? Kind of a gigantic fucking ass pull but it still feels less retarded than the prospect of the Miguruma orchestrating everything), but it has improved my opinion as a whole of the game.

As for Utawarerumono Prelude To the Fallen. Still in the early stages, though I did do the first battle. Combat system feels kind of wretched, not going to lie, but I do like the rest of the vibe. I do hope I get an explanation on why everybody is so trusting of a weird human with a mask that he can't take off though. I do like the sensation that he's been living there for a year at least.

I've also started Never17, but I'm still incredibly early, so not much of an impression yet.

do you mean never7 or ever17? the remasters/remakes are coming in a month maybe you should wait or at least use the fan patches like ever17 himmel edition.

Never17 is the weakest title of the Infinity Series. Ever17 is considered the best, and you don't have to read them in chronological order. All their stories are pretty self contained. The final part of the series, 12 Riven, is getting an English translation that's about 60% done. The only thing I found interesting about Never17 is it had some indirect references to Higurashi. I don't think the author was aware of the work though. I think it's just because they have similar themes.

Combat was never the strong point of any Utawarerumono game, if you want an SRPG, you play Tactics Ogre, FFT, or Fire Emblem. Uta is all about the narrative and characters.

I actually really liked it in the Mask games, felt more like a puzzle than stat based affair.

I had a brain fart. Ever17 Himmel edition is the one I've started. Have high hopes.

As long as it doesn't become an intrusive chore that stops everything to a screeching halt I'll be fine.

One question about Utawarerumono though, is there branching and is it linked to the events you pick when prompted? At first it just seemed like eventually you would see all but I finally got one where if I did A, I would not see B or C. Just want to get a simple idea of the game structure. Also, in these divergent points, should I save scum to see al scenes, or just save and let it play out till I have to replay? Also, should I keep a save for every decision or is there a developed scene jumping system that makes it unnecessary?
