Grand Order is... hard to describe.
New Fate Lore has come to my attention.

After dying on the stake, Joan of Arc inherited the throne of Metatron and became an angel. The job bored her so much that she became a smelly Gamer Girl Neet.

Nasu... I kneel.

Finished Chaos Child

I feel this was a visual novel with strong themes, but characters I could not care for personality wise. The name "Chaos;Child" is obviously an indirect reference to "Chaos Magic" which believes thoughts can become reality through the sheer will of consensus. However, Chaos Child takes this simple concept, and demonstrates how the information age, especially social media, can create delusions that become reality and effect the world as a whole.

I've read Chaos:Head Noah years ago, so, the story did not surprise me. My main grips - Serika's motivations, for her actions, are a bit underwhelming compared to some other characters such as Senri. Hinae and Hana routes are quite very forgettable, skippable even, and don't really do much for the story. Also, I think the lack of characters from noAH (though some do show up like Momo/Taku) hurts it for me. The line of continuation would have helped a bit to keep things interesting. So much stuff happened in nOaH, and I really felt like the authors wanted to forget about it.

Also, the Committee having more direct involvement in the events ruined the conspiracy aspect for me. At least in Stein's Gate and NoAh they acted through proxies who weren't so open about themselves. You kinda had to look through the weeds. But even then, these Committee members were underwhelming villians solely concerned with their own position and power within the organization. Wakui's plot, for example, seemed to be unnecessarily covulated for what he desired to accomplish. Why go through all that effort using Gigalomaniacs to create delusions to rule over reality? Social media, at least in the novel, does that much better than any other Committee tool. Maybe because he's an egomanic he doesn't realize that, but he should have just became a fucking journalist. Lol.

I'm also a bit disappointed some heroines, well characters really, like Riko, did not get a route. She was such a cool character, but they wasted her concept on being some stand-in villian for the plot. I felt like she could have been a better villian than Serika if she was the main protaganist with Senri's backstory. It seemed like at some parts it was going that way, but they flipped the script mid way through. Another note - the route structure is so annoying to do. You have skip so much text just to get the routes you need to finish the game. The game also had a lieu of technical problems like frequent crashes even with the CoZ patch. But that's not really relevant for the story. I also disliked the map scenes. They could have automated them to save time. The interaction did not add much to the story.

The True ending was phenomenal, and its definitely the most tragic of any SCI:ADV game. However, it takes a while to get to that point. Miyashiro really is a tragic maytr of the truth. The tragic irony is that it took so long for him to realize lies don't only exist to harm people, but to protect people. Following Senri's example, he gives up his life for the people he loved despite a lie - a very noble lie indeed - to protect their happiness. If only he could have been so lucky as Okarin.

Note II: I also recall Miyashiro having the same name as the protagonist of Muv Luv and that isn't really a coincidence considering their personalities are very similar.

People that recommend Saya no Uta fail to mention that Saya gets raped by some old man. Like really nigger. Why the fuck would you not mention that?

Heaven Burns Red has the Angel Beats collab and some much needed quality of life features. Worth it to see the old cast of the series at least. Is the VN version still at work? Also the death of the band member in the backstory is brutal as fuck.

Edit: Having the epilogue of the event was nice, though it was a bit too happy and if anything I prefer the bad ends for the tragedy aspect. Wonder if it was originally in the VN that never released. Anyways fun collab.

I really wonder what's the issue considering everything else going on.

Visual novels have made it hard for me to go back to manga and anime. Anyone else have this problem?
I keep an eye on the seasonal chart to see if there's anything worth taking a look at and I browse mangadex at work while I'm on break. But, that's about it. I frequently drop new shows before the 5th episode comes out.

Does anybody have any experience with running VNs on Linux? I'm tired of Microsoft fucking me over and I want to finally make the move for my Chinese Picture Books. I know games that use the Muramasa engine are a complete nightmare to run or require some library fuckery. I also already know that running some VNs on Windows is already a pain in the ass on it's own so I'm absolutely looking forward to having to do it for Linux.

Demonbane also kicks ass. Feels like I'm reading a monster of the week Super Robot anime. Also the soundtrack is absolutely not what I was expecting but it's fantastic. Arkham City and the other jazz related themes are earworms.

Also for those playing Hundred Line, how are those playthroughs going? I'm about 10/100 endings through and I still can't believe that this game got made and has the longest VN script by a good 2 million Japanese characters. I will say that it's more of the same for Danganronpa in terms of energy so if you aren't a fan of that, don't bother. The gameplay is actually not awful, it's competent and easy to break which probably stops me from hating it outright. I think it's a cool mechanic that you actually get bonuses for having your units kill themselves. It's a nice twist and a good comparison to other SRPGs that I've played.

Any up-to-date game suggestions?
I've been using the /vg/ recommended list for the longest time. I've still barely scraped the list so I'm not worrying about going through recommended lists personally.

I kinda expected it but does it really matter when the one being raped is an alien abomination pretending to be a little girl, and it's in a novel filled with body horror, rape and death?
Any up-to-date game suggestions?
I liked The Runaway Lamb and Faraway, both on Steam and has a lot of charm. If you are new to the medium, I suggest not playing anything above 10 hours. It's an easy way to burn out.

I personally blame the content restrictions on anime particularly, since ignoring the obvious restrictions on sexual content, the type of extreme content you can tackle in your themes and directly display is much more limited. That, and multiple routes sidestep the problem of having the worst girl win (unless there is one true route...)

Windows XP VMs my friend. I thank the Japanese propensity for using extremely old tech and engines. You don't even really need to get hardware acceleration working most of the time because, I mean, it's a VN.

OK, Finished Ever17. And fuck me, yes, sacrifice indeed, though is this fanart? No image like this exists int he game.

So, impressions

Loved the twist, really reminded me of 999's own "larp a situation to force a scenario in the past" and would be surprised if 999 was directly inspired by Ever17. Before that there were things that were niggling at the back of my head like how Sarah's hologram, the man there was dressed like Takeshi, but didn't seem it was or how You is so gung ho in the Kids while a lot more reserved in Takeshi, I just assumed the obvious that "well never interacted as much". Was wondering what the hell was the relation between Coco and Sara (spoilers, there is none). Another of the big ones that made me go thunk was when Sara reprogramed Sora yet even against certain death she did not mention the undersea lab. Tsugumi clearly acting like if she knew shit on the Kid route was also a big tell, but she's such a huge bitch till she lowers he barriers, I just assumed it was her standard brand of behaviour when not being the main heroine. Lots of little bibs and bobs just kind of niggling in the back of my head.

But once the reveal hits that it's a fucking reenacment everything just falls into place so much more. It was convoluted as all hell and there is a lot of "narrative convenience" (Yes, miss Tanaka You, you may have this gigantic fuck you sack of money to rebuild a destroyed theme park and then proceed to destroy it because... reasons), but I enjoyed the ride and the characters so much that I just rolled with it. Big thing I do miss is a proper tearful reunion between Takeshi and Tsugumi, would certainly have liked to see that more than Coco and Hokuto behaving like retards, which kind of goes with my biggest criticism against the game, my god does it fail miserably to be cutesy. I wanted to strangle Coco half the time and whenever Hokuto/Kaburaki had a sperg out and started behaving like if they had 10 years was pretty annoying.

Going back to the ending, liked the paradox that needed to be solved, so sadly, Tusgumi was cursed to eat a LOT of shit for 17 years. Which brings me to Tsugumi best girl, Takeshi best boy (again enjoyed playing with a charismatic character like Haruaki from Raging Loop) and You Haru version second best girl (specially post timeskip). Though honestly outside of Coco being too cutesy for her own good, all the characters have their charm. It did kind of ruin the impact for me of "saving Coco" since I just didn't particularly like her except when she was being criptic, had Sara been the main fulcrum, I would have enjoyed that more, but that's neither here nor there.

So follow up questions, saw that there is an Ever 17 BW route, which seems to be another path, I can only conclude that's a rerelease thing?

Also, from what I kind of absorved here, there are other games related but not worth playing, is that a correct assumption or is there gold to mine? For now, I'll let VN's rest for a bit. Though I would like to start thinking of what to get into next.

Have in m wishlist
Aokana - Four Rythms Across the Blue which I imagine is just slice of life
Slay the princess - oh so clever western writting but I imagine it will be fun for a while and sounds short
Little Busters - From what I'm getting here, it's a must read, but rivals with Clannad on word count
Island - I imagine just something nice and chill
Gnosia - Sounds like crazy time shenanigans again, which are definitely something I enjoy, but would rather let rest till I get into it
Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception - Just continue the story

Anyone of those in particular that people have strong feelings about?

I felt like Little Busters was shorter, but that might have been because I enjoyed it a lot more than Clannad. Compared to Clannad, its focus is more on friendship rather than family and is a very comfy/wholesome read. It isn't solely focused on female characters either, which is a plus since the male characters are such bros. Routes vary a lot in quality, but the overall theme of friendship stays constant throughout the entire VN, and they all provide clues towards the overarching plot/mystery.

If you're up for something heartwarming as a break from the shitty times we live in, I'd say go for Little Busters. Doing a route every now and then works fine for this one. I never really felt like I had to consume all of it at once to understand what was happening.

Also interesting is that after the "true ending", you actually unlock more routes rather than it serving as the finale.
