I'm playing the Tsukihime remake and something is really bothering me, how the fuck do you pronounce Arcueid in English? They literally say, "Ak-u-ay-do", and if you just sound it out then you'd think the proper pronunciation is just, " Ark-oo-aid" but I feel like pronouncing the u in Arcueid just makes the name sound super off and Engrish. To me it'd make more sense if it was just pronounced like, "arcade" in English but maybe there's something I'm not getting. It just bugs me every time I read it because it's like a sentence-stopper, it flows off the tongue so badly.

The founder of VNDB, Yorhel, has unfortunately passed away. VNDB is probably one of the best and most comprehensive sites I've seen for information on a game genre bar none. The amount of detail that goes into which versions/patches/etc. is astounding and the only thing I'm hoping is that things don't get worse from here. Forum thread here.

Truly soul crushing news.
VNDB is not only of the best resources about Visual Novels, but also has still kept the vibes of old pre social media internet. It's one of the last of it's kind.
I hope it will be preserved.

I find it disheartening how many VNs apparently have interesting settings, plots, etc. ... and are eroge. It means you cannot experience the VN without being exposed to whatever sex fetish the author likes, and you cannot really recommend the game to anyone (or even admit to playing it), either.

I've only played one such game, Tsui no Sora. I picked it up because I'm interested in "schizo" games, and because it seems to be more-or-less popular in the VN community. I figured, hey, even if there's sex content, surely it cannot be that bad if all these people have quite liked it...?
...Turns out, approximately half of the game's runtime are long, unskippable, and incredibly graphic rape hentai scenes. That cute girl that greets you in the start? Yes, you're going to read an interminably long play-by-play of her being raped, in every anatomically possible direction.
A pity, because the game's themes of insanity, melding of real life and fantasy, Lovecraftian undertones, and the general surreal atmosphere are genuinely interesting! Except, especially in the latter half, the plot repeatedly screeches to a halt so that you can read about RAPE RAPE SEX WITH A FUTANARI RAPE RAPE SEX.
Yyyeah.
Yeah, it was kind of a "Dead Dove", but... honestly, I figured that sex scenes in eroge were usually mild and ignorable (just a bit of an extra selling point tacked onto the actual story), and that's why do these games have so many out-and-proud fans despite their content.

You could say it on a ton of books though. Just look into the game beforehand to see if it has unskippable porn or not.

But with Denpa genre, crazy sex shit is the standard because when reality break down, the logical progression is reverting to a base human being who only cares about violence and sex. Else it just comes into generic western toothless "wackiness" nihilism.

Edit: Like reading anything made by the Marquis de Sade.

VNDB was always a nice constant, considering how much anime sites and their general fanbase changed and morphed. A lot of VN sites in general seem to be stuck in the past, such as if you look up resources on NScripter or an obscure VN whose only translation was some guy in 2008.

Maybe you can play on patch for some games? I've never did, so not sure how much they get you out of immersion (do these scenes happen in background, or is game trying to write around it like it didn't?).
I only had played one VN with erotic content (Kara no Shoujo ?) as it had interesting mystery at the start, but it suffered from dogshit game design (like literally guess random arbitrary option or get into bad ending route). I'm never ever bothering with it or anything from these people.
It's less that for me, and the rabidness of people wanting to keep the h scenes in vns that dont fit the story.
I feel like they might think it's obligatory game element to include. Which is funny when same games get adaptations that just don't include that shit as they want to release it as anime under non-18+ rules.

Sad news. RIP Yorhel. VNDB put me on the best VNs out there. I hope it the site can keep going.

Sex sells, unfortunately. It's just standard for the VN medium. Hell, even something like FATE that's been massively expanded on and is extremely successful started off as an eroge and that was entirely because sexual content was the standard in VNs and expected. Even if the sexual content has been removed in later releases it's still just how VNs are most of the time.

I had just finished reading Fate S/N and I mentioned it to a friend and his reaction was just "Wait, the game with the cum-magic?"
I asked him what the fuck kind of R34 shit he's been watching, but no, he went digging and turns out the original version had retarded sex scenes in it and now I think he's ruined Fate for me.

Yeah, it's what "mana transfers" are, they have sex.

If you want to know, Nasu was told to write such by the publisher to include sex scenes because "it won't sell otherwise", basically forced. He stated he wasn't comfortable with writing such due to being a virgin at the time. Hence you end up with a lot of dumb seafood comparisons and lines like "Rin's defenceless anus" because he couldn't write a sex scene to save his life.

It was worse in the OG tsukihime, with "tearing Hisui" along with said scenes just being out of place.

I'm not really certain what Nasu's intentions where w.r.t. the sex scenes, but he was his own boss on Fate and Tsukihime, which were self-published. His artist, Takeuchi, may have had some input, but Nasu had final say on what went into F/SN in its original form.

Guess I've misheard/misremembered the story, then. I know it was some sort of need to add them because "everybody else does it" if I remember right?

That's what I've heard too, w/ the added detail of Takeuchi pushing Nasu to add the scenes. I have some doubts to the validity of those claims... but I don't care enough to look into any of it. oh well.

In fairness to Tsukihime, shoehorning in sex scenes was the industry standard at the time because it was believed that VNs without them wouldn't sell. This may or may not have been true, but these days there are a lot more all ages games that do fine.

Just picked up and finished AI The Somnium Files: No Sleep For Kaname Date on steam sale. I can't believe they managed to create a name that outdid Ai The Somnium Files: Nirvana Initiative, but here we are. I guess I found this one kind of... whelming. It did not hit the consistent high highs of the first game, but also avoided the abyssal lows of Nirvana Initiative. On the other hand though. I'm leaving the game with not much other than "yeah, it was fine i guess". The first AI was top notch the whole through and only got more exciting as the twists got revealed. NI was mostly fine, and could be really interesting when it started to do some really bizarre stuff. However, there were 2 big twist scenes, 1 of which was at least extremely cool in isolation, although both had me channeling Spoony while shouting BETRAYAL at the game. NSFKD did not really have either the lows or the highs or the stakes the series had had. It might be for the best the game is only about 2/3 the length of the first game though, since it is mostly a low stakes adventure. I guess I rate AI: NSFKD as an okay/10, which might not be a good thing because the first game was great, and the second had so much to talk about when breaking down why it was less than great. The escape rooms were pretty cool, but I think 999 still has my favorite ones.
