Since the cast is about 98 percent male, there's plenty of opportunity for "character interaction". The villains also get catty with each other at times so that can get the yaoi imagination going.
I admit, I'm a female who wonders why other girls find the yaoi thing attractive. My theory is that yaoi fans are developmentally stunted, preferring nonthreatening, boyish males to more demanding, more self-reliant adult men. It's the same reason why schoolteachers in their 20's and 30's seduce their teenage students - look into their backgrounds and you'll often find said schoolteachers had developmental problems - marrying too early, marrying abusive men, etc.

I don't think it's a coincidence a lot of yaoi has rape in it, if not non-con (unless "non-con" is a "softer" word to avoid the dreaded R-word). Fujoshits have some depraved rape fantasies of which they pretend otherwise or at least try to romanticize it.

Considering how Go Nagai was already writing/drawing manga with sexual and/or violent stuff that was published in shonen manga magazines (ie. Devilman was published in Weekly Shonen Magazine and Dororon Enma-kun in Weekly Shonen Sunday, both being mags whose primary audience was teenage boys), sexual content in JPN kids' show wasn't always JUST playful innuendo. It just wasn't as blatant as it is now.
(Even more, Voltron was based on Beast King Golion where the Evil Prince lusted after the Innocent Princess, was all but said to have raped another princess who looked like her, and actually had an harem. DOTU!Lotor's creepy crush on DOTU!Allura didn't come from thin air. :/a )

Anything to delude themselves into thinking that their precious "hot purple elf" was the true unsung hero of ther story and deserved Allura as his arm candy! When in reality he was a guy who COULD have been a great hero, but in the end took horrible decisions and wasn't too different from the evil daddy he claimed to hate!
