To this day I cannot wrap my head around how people can unironically enjoy and willingly present themselves in a virtual 3D chatroom -- be it Second Life, IMVU, or in this case VRChat -- as a greasy, ran-through bootleg Bratz doll with overexaggerated bodily proportions and and Uncanny Valley inducing pseudo-realistic textures and shading. Can someone please help me understand what is the appeal of those models? What's the psychology behind it? Personally I find them absolutely physically repulsive so I have no idea.

I would go as to say that you can pretty accurately gauge someone's interests and state of mind by the models they choose to represent themselves as, since it takes a conscious effort to go out of your way and seek out a player model that makes one go "Yep, this is EXACTLY who I want to be seen as".

Fair point. Tbh the only negative feelings I have for what I see in this thread is from how disappointed I am that VRC has degraded THIS MUCH since launch. I kinda miss those Ugandan Knuckles days when it was new and people could just socialize and have fun with each other. It's a good thing Tower Unite filled that niche since, but I'm worried it'll fall down the same rabbit hole once VR support for it gets completed.
