I will never understand people who watch Japanese vtubers while they do not understand Japanese. Anime has subtitles, so that is obvious, but how the fuck does someone like this even get an English speaking audience in the first place? This has always baffled me, and the best comparison someone in the vtumor thread came up with was "it's like listening to a foreign song or going to a foreign concert" which I don't really buy, because you can just look up the lyrics to a song.

Basically what I'm saying is: Why is this even a big deal to fucking gaijin in the first place??? You can't even understand this bitch!

V-Tubers are popular because of the faux-exoticism and popularity of Japanese pop culture (especially among millennials and zoomers) mixed with the entire complex of parasocial effects associated with the camgirl.

Pikamee speaks english and japanese, and would often repeat things in both languages for both audiences, so you can pick up words here and there. She's also entertaining, and as others have mentioned, was a catalyst for many other english vtubers.

Anime is very popular among the young people these days so it is only natural that VTubers would have some great deal of success even though personally I can't see the appeal. Maybe viewers want a "waifu" they can interact with? It's not even just women either, there is also a good deal of generic pretty guy streamers with K-pop idol physique out there.

Their essentially the idols of Japan and Korea with or without singing ability but on the Internet and have anime avatars. As a cherry on top, there are corporate "agencies" churning them out as often as their physical counterparts churn out boy bands and girl groups.

Yeah, not sure about the jp vtubers. There are clip channels with subtitles, and some have translators in chat for livestreams I guess. I'm sure there's plenty of mega-weebs who understand enough japanese to enjoy the streams

Anime has only ballooned in popularity more than ever before since Feb -March 2020 with no signs of slowing down, so it's only natural for spin-offs from anime centric medium to garner a wider audience as a result of this popularity boom.

Pikamee was not necessarily a pioneer in this phenomenon (there were many others before her), but undeniably bridged a gap between Japanese and American audiences that made people a lot more interested in these types of streamers.

Regardless about what you think about vtubers as a whole and the culture that surrounds it, it's a shame that someone like Pikamee had to retire in this fashion, especially with how much laughter and joy she brought to people that watched her.

I saw her from time to time trending alongside a bunch of other vtubers on clip channels, she was one of the good ones for sure.
