The Tau are notorious in-universe for the amount of humans they've convinced to side with them as a result of such hideous promises as "we'll treat you decently" and "look at these gadgets that are going to give you a standard of living". They don't always deploy them as military forces but if they've managed to sway the local PDF or any IG regiments that have deployed they'll keep them around and give them some goodies like pulse rifles and tech upgrades. Actually getting them into TT as a full auxiliary is rough since they'd either be slightly different Fire Warriors or a just an entire IG platoon, which is something nobody really wants since Tau players don't want to run horde armies and Kroot already serve as perfect cannon fodder nobody can feel bad about losing.

If you go to a Warhammer store you could also request a demo game if you're curious how the tabletop actually plays. The Store Manager will run you through a turn using a couple models to get the idea. They will sell you on intro boxes because they are required to. I know I just ranted at GW for their shit sets, but the $65 Introductory set is maybe not bad of a deal. Getting an actual kit is always going to be expensive if it's Warhammer. If you do decide to invest in some painting supplies go cheap. Buy cheap brushes, cheap clippers, and don't be afraid to use a paper plate as a pallet. Learn what you don't like about them before upgrading. No brush or paint, or tool is going to make your model look better if you don't know how to use them. If you decide it's not for you then you aren't out much money.

Well Orks would be hard to pull off because to them its all "if aint green, dats lame", only ones you can MAYBE justify is BloodAxes, because theyre just a merc clan. Funny thing, a Tau detachement that lets ya use imperial guardsmen was a thing Tau players been asking for a while, heck GSC has such a detachment, so weird that Tau dont get one.

Zou also wrote Blood Gorgons which is a good read if you want Chaos SM that work like an actually competent satanic Spec Ops unit istead of loudmouthed shitheads. Too bad Zou plagiarized IIRC a paragraph or two in that, so he's no longer welcome in the Black Library as GW would rather throw one of their scarce good writers under the bus than risk losing a penny in litigation.

Blood Gorgons was absolutely magnificent.

EDIT: Started reading Flesh and Iron and it seems far more inspired by the conflicts in the Philippines than Vietnam, especially since the Kalisadors practice well... Kali.

If you also want to get the free mini of the month, those are out on Saturday, and depending on the density of GW stores in your area you may want to be sure you're there and ready to queue before it opens. My local GW is the only one for a few hundred miles in every direction, so it draws in people from multiple states; the free mini is usually gone within a couple of hours and the collector coins never last much longer than that.

Mea culpa, it's been many years since I read that book. I remembered jungles, guerilla warfare, natives and like covert operation to strike at the enemies hidden base, so my first thought went to Vietnam.

Oh, its definitely a mix of both in terms of inspiration, but the overall situation is far more Filipino, especially since you've got such Filipino things like the villagers making everything out of scrap.

Also finished Fire Caste, and damn, was that a nasty but good read. Apocalypse Now on what's heavily implied to be a Nurgle-tainted world.

Started listening to book one of Horus Heresy as playing Space Marine 2 got me into the world/lore. Doing some googling it appears the next series I should look into is The Siege of Terra. I hate turn based games but I hear a lot of people enjoy Rogue Trader. Is it worth trying even if I hate turn based games?
 
So I've just read The Reflection Crack'd and I'm more than a little bit confused.

After the Emperor's Children are done with their little bonding exercise, Lucius drops down to his knees in realization that Fulgrim is actually Fulgrim. But wasn't it pretty definitely established that he's being controlled by the Laer / Anathame / warp entity by the end of the first novel? Did I misinterpret one of the books, or is this something that's explained later on?

I also found it a bit silly how Eidolon gets absolutely destroyed for asking a relatively innocent question, meanwhile Fabius and the other conspirators get off completely free (ignoring a few deaths) despite plotting against and literally sodomizing their primarch with a medieval torture device.

At the end, Fulgrim basically says "yeah, no, I made that sword-daemon my bitch and shoved it into that painting of me, I'm me again but fully on the Slaanesh train, it was just a prank bro, I wanted to see how loyal you were to me." It's never specified how or when he pulled this off, which is kind of annoying because that could have been a short story in its own right.

No, it's just bad writing. The only possible explanation is that the thing got in his head, tried to take over and failed, but let fulgrim himself know the "truth" of the universe or whatever and turned him into what he currently is today. But if that's the case, it's just written so poorly it's like the author just wanted an excuse to write an extended sodomy scene and then try to justify it later.

Eidolon gets his head sewn back on later(which is stupid considering they left him there for an extended period and it isn't like it was done immediately... again, bad writing) and it's treated like a minor inconvenience ,with the implication that fulgrim let the captains sodomize him because a: he wanted the experience and b: it proved some sort of point to them.

edit: This bad writing is part of peak grimderp where dumb shit happens just for the sake of happening, and in this case since both were written by the same guy, doesn't even have the excuse of multiple authors having a go and not being consistent with eachother.

GW wont do it, but Tau could be the largest range of models if they embraced the auxiliaries idea.

Guard could have their own range within Tau. Most races in-universe, whether they have been mentioned previously or invented for the purpose, could get a mini range. Leader, 2-3 types of foot troops, maybe 2-3 vehicles per auxiliary race.

Tau arent popular so it wont happen, but the idea is begging to be used. Hell they should really revisit Imperium ally rules.

Best GW can do is another Primaris captain.
 
The funniest part of Crack’d is Lucius already showing he’s marked for greatness by being the only one to go, “This is fucking ridiculous.” That and the ship being a prison yard.

Eidolon being dead for an extended period of time is referenced, post-rez he zones out, disassociates and has mood swings, he has brain damage in addition to the stilted movements and complete lack of grace. It’s what killed him that’s how he was able to come back so…….. functional compared to Fabius’s other creations.

I always interpreted Fulgrim excising the daemon as part of Slaanesh’s plan, once Fulgrim was nice and broken, he could have his body back. The primarch soul is the prize, not the shell. Again, should’ve been a short story or should’ve been his primarch novel.

Store manager was extremely welcoming, painted a bit gave us some tips such as drybrushing a priming layer. She really wanted some sisters of battle and i'm a sucker for thousand sons color scheme so I thought we'd each pick a faction to paint and maybe eventually play. They do host demo games which we were invited to as well as painting classes.

the big intro set with terrains and stuff was tempting I just find ultramarines and tyranids to be visually boring. She's basically an artist for her job so supplies is no problem.

Rubrics are a great kit, one of the last made with the old style of ball-jointed waists, while being in the nu-scale. The “perfect” updated cult legion kit.
