Just finished the first booking in The Scouring series; Ashes of the Imperium by Chris Wraight. He's probably the best author BL has apart from Fehervari imo, but he's niche.

It was excellent, without going into spoilers I particularly liked the dynamics between the legions who had defended Terra and the Ultramarines as the late comers and the tension and resentment that came as a result of that. There's a couple of lines about Dorn & the Khan finally having the prestige and love of the people but no power anymore, and Guilliman arriving late but having the power of an intact legion, putting him in charge by default.

It's kind of meta, the Ultramarines coming in late and rebuilding Terra is why they're the poster boys of the Astartes. They fed and sheltered the people after and led the reconquest of the Imperium. Other legions are even being supplied weapons and vehicles made in Ultramar and they hate it. They're hated by other legions as much as by the fans. Makes me like them tbh.

Sure, but it's also interesting in the sense that the ultramarines got fucked by the wordbearers incredibly early on, so they had time to rebuild because literally nothing else to do for years, otherwise they would have been involved for the entirety. What I found interesting about the dynamic between Guilliman and the rest in that book, was kind of like Imperium Secondus, Guilliman didn't actually want to be in charge. Even when he straight up asks his brothers to assemble and basically vote on what to do, the rest are still too busy being angry(Vulkan literally just going around angrily hunting EC and killing them one by one) and don't want to bother, to the point of Dorn setting up some goofy secret mission with the Lion and Russ, to come back with intel and "see, I told you so!" when all he had to do was just fucking talk with everybody... and instead because they didn't find the evidence wound up proving Guilliman's point and causing Russ to go fuck off by himself

Yeah they did a good job rebuilding, say what you want about Girlyman but he's the final boss of administration and shit gets done.

And I agree, the tension came entirely from his brothers. He wanted to do things right and form a plan based on mutual consensus but his brothers were either prideful or wrathful. The bit at the start where Vulkan was having EC herded to him one at a time was great, he'd truly had enough haha. I was surprised by Dorn, but not by the Lion or Russ.
