i tell ya its a right pain in the ass tracking down models like chad hammerstrom, cant imagine what limbs it would cost for a original archaon model.

Nah, too sloppy.
They need to know true fear.
And before anyone suggests The Emperor's Children, these numbnuts would enjoy a visit from them.
Send a Khornate war band.
Actually, send in the thunder warriors. After all it's the first unification war on the merican continent. They are the true predators of techno-warlord Raz.

Let's drown them in progressiveness (and promethium) with some Sisters.

Surely they'll be more than happy to being policed by a feminine hand.

Wonder what a Thematic List for Blood Ravens would be?
Late, but snag yourself a Bjorn the Fell-Handed model if you can afford him and give him a sloppy red paint job that lets Space Wolf Grey shine through in places. Use him as a Ven Dread. Have plenty of wargear be from other Imperial factions, such as SoB-styled jet packs on some people and maybe a Custodes blade on your Warlord. If you use thunder hammers, get a Forgebreaker bit from the HH.

Well, on further thought, sure we want to send space marines put Chaz in line through force. But really the most entertaining thing would be to send a single marine of the Alpha Legion.

Or Mendax (High Gothic for "liar", subtle, GW), that one unaugmented Alpha operative from that story who conquered a whole world for Horus by trolling.

Speaking of Alpha Legion, I'm re-reading the Horus Heresy books. Just finished Legion by Abnett, one of my faves. It would make a fantastic standalone film, know we were talking about that a few days ago. It's basically set in grimdark Chaos Afghanistan with the Alpha Legion playing the role of CIA (until they get shown a movie by xenos and decide to declare for Horus because by doing so they'll avoid the canon future), so it's real-world relevant too.

On one hand I want them to be fleshed out to the point of having a codex. On the other I know they would immediately ruin it.

I've always been interested in 40k, but I have neither the time nor money to invest into the game. I see people here reference the lore all the time, and I recently found out there's a bunch of books based on the 40k universe, and they're held in high regard by the fans. What I want to ask is, what books would you all recommend to someone who is trying to break into the series for the first time?

Without hesitation, the Dan Abnett inquisitor books (the Eisenhorn trilogy of Xenos, Malleus, and Hereticus, and then the Ravenor trilogy that follows that, followed by another Eisenhorn book and then one out of three books of a new trilogy out, so that's a lot of words.) They are pretty standalone and really well done, and let you dip a toe into lore. After that, perhaps the Gaunt's Ghosts books, also by Abnett (he's almost certainly the best author they have doing 40K stuff, you might be aware of another thing he did called "Guardians of the Galaxy.") There's a bunch of them, they deal with the Imperial Guard, unaugmented human grunts in a grimdark universe), or, for a lighter take on the Guard, Sandy Mitchell's Caiaphas Cain books. Both IG series deal with different types of adversary factions that exist in the lore so there is some variety (more variety in the Cain books, the Gaunt books deal more with Chaos as the adversary, as do the inquisitor books.)

The Horus Heresy books are many and of uneven quality, and you probably need a better footing in the lore to understand what is going on, but some of them are quite good.

Start the Horus Hersey series(Horus rising being the first book). @Spooky Bones Is correct in his description of the Horus Heresey series, However I believe Horus Rising, Fulgrim, and Legion are perfectly adequate jump off points.

I heavily second reading Guant's Ghosts(The Founding is the first book.) Or Caiaphas Cain( The Hero of The Imperium).

Some others I'd say maybe are Storm of Iron and uh Ultramarine(Graham Mcneil) because you cant go wrong with the starting with boys in blue, and maybe Nightlords (Aaron Bawdin) if you want a little chaos.

A bit out of left field pick. But if there is a flavor of Space Marine you are interested in, I would recommend just googling any books about them(if they exist) and just jumping in saying "fuck it".

The first four Horus Heresy books are kino. You can read those and then pick and choose unless you are a weirdo completionist like me.

I also recommend the Uriel Ventris chronicles by Graham McNeil. The Beast Arises series is super sick and Dante is a great book.

Too bad you missed the 99 cent book of the week promo before they ended it.

In other news I assembled and primed 1 aggressor squad and 1 intercessor squad today. I may pull off a decent point army before end of next week.
