Hm.

So, what's everyone use for hobby tools? Looking at getting some new sprue cutters, files, plastic putty, that sort of thing.

Edit: Arch update. As everyone knew, GW's virtue signaling wasn't enough -- it's never enough. They want specific actions as to how GW is fighting [Bigotry] inside of GW, as well as inside of the community they have absolutely no control over. They're trying to force them to go beyond just stupid platitudes.

They want a Diversity and Inclusion czar at GW, and are assmad that they fired Thomas Parrott for telling off the "fascists" on Twitter. (Note: He was also 99.999% the source of the leaks that ruined GW's summer advertisement push.)

The entryism begins.

The signatories of the list are pretty amusing, too. Feminist 40k, the old precursor to Sigmarxism, is there, and a bunch of London cucked gaming groups.

I recently bought a 10-Piece Mini Diamond Needle File Set and an Xacto Precision Razor Saw Set.

I plan on buying a set of Lmbros Wax Carving Tool Wax Tools Stainless Steel Tools (sculpting tools), 90 grams of ProCreate Putty, and a
Roll Maker Set from Green Stuff World (I'm not using this to make tubes or tentacles, I'm using it to help make scales).

The only 'growth of hatred' in the community is as a direct reactionary response to the bougie progressive entryism into the hobby trying to make it as pozzed as MTG and D&D

Fuck GW, they deserve everything coming at them.

if they actually go through with any of this shit they will just crash their entire franchise, because that how its always ends anytime a company has given any ground to these pinko fucks.

Never apologize or even listen to the SJW crowd, if you give them what they want, they'll just ask for more. Has GW learned nothing about these people?

Also, I kinda make my own. I've filed down sides of pliers, grabbed a whetstone and put an edge on sculpting tool, etc. If the police ever suspected me of being a serial killer, they're gonna find what looks to be a sinister torture set.

Edit: I am not, in fact, a serial killer, just very particular about my hobby tools.

It’s strange yet not a surprise that the leftoid bugmen have come for GW after they’ve done their damage to WotC. You’re never going to satisfy them and their demands wind up driving off sensible people.

As for tools, I used to use the tools I used to build gunpla. If I do go through with buying the new set I might still use them. A lot of the files and sprue cutters were pretty decent for Japanese imports.

I wanted to buy kingdom death so badly but I could never justify the price. There’s always that one fucker on /tg/ wip threads posting kingdom death minis and they’re always a work of art in themselves.
I’ve seen some pretty decent bootlegs people have got from ebay, but even those are expensive. It’s a shame it’s overpriced because so many of those monsters are pretty cool.

96 data sheets in the new Codex Space Marines.

1 Captain + 2 Lieuts per detachments (same as Tau). So no more Smash Captain Spam.

Land Speeders were split into a ton of different distinct data sheets, so the rule of 3 means you can field ~27 of them. This includes two different Predator datahseets, so you can field 6 of them out of the box. The Indomitus HQs are rolled into the standard Primaris HQ sheets (so there's no special HQ data sheet for the Indomitus Captain). Makes me wonder if the upcoming multipart kits will have better weapons options. Will we finally get a Gravis Armor Captain with different gear?

Tartaros and Cataphractii terminators were merged into "Relic Terminator Squads." And they nuked the Cataphractii Captain, which is funny, since they're still for sale on GW's page: https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/horus-heresy-space-marine-heroes

And apparently they're sending him out in Warhammer 40k Conquest, a UK exclusive subscription magazine + mini... thing.

On another subject, I'm getting into my painting, got a Valejo Game Paints starter set, but I'm probably going to be wanting some other droppers. Whats a good cost effective way to get single bottles of paints?

Getting them from a FLGS first, if that's not an option look for online vendors near you. Some places in the netherlands and belgium don't get the full Vallejo range for some reason, although they get the Model Color one. Citadels are absurdly overpriced where I live so I try to share the cost with a buddy and we just share, although lately I've been balls-deep into AK's paints, specially their pastels and greys which are essential for smooth blending. If you have Vallejo available, try to find some of their liquid metal stuff like Duraluminum and Chrome because good god nothing compares.

For general sprue cutting, get you some tamiya nippers (the pressed steel type, the ones that look like scissors) they are not expensive and last a long time before needing to be resharpened

oijphugoyfitdykgjyhkj.jpg

If, for some reason you must do clean-cuts with nippers (not the tool I'd use but whatever) maybe invest in a machined pair of nippers (the ones that have one edge sharp and a dulled opposite) They can be pricier, like those god hands for example, but the advantage is less cleanup with sanding later. Paul Budzik's youtube channel did a review some time ago
grhetryjtfkugih.jpg

You could of course buy citadel's overpriced nippers, or even army painters, I'm not your dad.

For files, any elcheapo guzman jeweler's files will do. Get a variety of round ones, triangle-shaped and flat ones.

Epoxy putty is such a complicated topic I don't think my opinion will hold water. Some folks are comfortable using milliput, others using kneadatite/green stuff rolls. Then there's magic sculpt and apoxie which are more expensive but better value per volume overall.
Everyone will claim "they harden like rock" but in my experience green stuff hardens into a gummy-like soft texture, ideal for surface detail but not something I'd use to scratch sculpt a weapon or a cape. Again, I'm not the master here, someone with years of experience should lay down the info.
The pros will likely mix green stuff with milliput superfine or apoxie, 2:1 or 3:1 ratio for better results, you're gonna have to experiment first. Putty can be smoothed out using a shit brush dipped in water (or in the case of non-water soluble putty like apoxie, lacquer thinner)
You can also use silicone brushes for this, if you have the pulse and patience.
You're going to need some toothpicks and dental tools to help you shape your putty. Luckly most dental tools can be bought new or second hand at a dime a dozen these days. Add to that a spatula-type tool and a ball-tip tool, and the tip of a ball pen to remove round shapes and you're set.

For the love of god avoid buying "branded" official overpriced tools, they are the same cheap thing but "gamerized" to charge you an extra $20 that you could spend on a miniature.

Start out making baby's first putty shapes: make a cube, make a sphere, trace some ridges. Then get comfortable using different tools for carving and shaping the stuff. Once you have that move onto making a less shitty cube and a less shitty sphere, then into adding details to something, like a tiny skull on a marine. There are tutorials (good and bad) on youtube on how to add capes and clothing, using vaseline and plastic kitchen film. The great news about putty sculpting is that the more you practice and the more patience you give to it the less bad the results will turn out. And again you don't need expensive equipment to do it, it's not like plastic carving using a fucking $400 ultrasonic cutter, or cleaning your airbrush with a sonicator. Just go at it.

You're on the right track. Practice, practice and practice. You know some of the old Golden Daemon winners were very poor painters when they started the hobby? It's the same thing here. Try new mixtures, if it dries too soft for you, add more of the hardening mixture. Dip the tip of finger(or your tools) with a bit of water and run it lightly over parts you want to smooth out, try different tools for details and using a light touch on everything goes a long way. If you're like me, and others who couldn't paint to save their life, eventually you'll find a method that works for you as there's no one right way to get the job done. It takes a while, I'll admit, but if you're a hobbyist with a will to learn you'll get to a point where you can be happy with what you made. I promise.
