Thank you and @Imperial Citizen for your responses. If we end up liking the game, it isn't a huge deal to branch out into other armies so I am not as concerned about being locked in.

If anything it just means more variety!
You can check out Kill Team, too. It let's you try out a lot of factions with minimal financial investment and the rules are very simple. Almost all the game mechanics translate to 40k except the dice rolls, and the play area is significantly smaller.

None of those faggots actually have friends.
Very ableist of you to assume xir has no headmates.
My wife and I were talking this weekend about learning 40K. Looks like 10th edition is out soon and I was thinking of getting that Leviathan box as a starter.

You guys think that is the right choice?
Firs thing is, get what looks cool, rules go through cycles but if you don't like how your army looks, your motivation to actually build and paint will be nill. Also, pace very well any sort of purchasing since too much plastic will mentally block you from progressing with the tide.

With that out of the way. I believe 40K is a shit game system for the most part. If you just want to play with your wife for shits and giggles it's perfectly serviceable, but the moment you want to start playing with strangers and (god forbid) tournaments, you may find yourself with gigantic asshats on the other side. It is the nature of the beast since this is the most popular miniature game by far, but still, something worth warning you about.

If you try out the game, like the models but think it takes way too long, you can look into One Page Rules Grimdark which is basically a fanmade very simplified ruleset that apes all of the 40k factions and units. I wouldn't file that game as amazing as either, but it plays incredibly quick, which is something I appreciate quite a bit. As a bonus, if by some miracle people play this in your area, they will likely be a lot more chill purely from being a much more fringe community and playing a ruleset that is very much oriented to have a good time. I also have gone through a lot of games, so I can suggest at a minimum models with other sorts of themes or aesthetics (fantasy, western, steampunk, yaddayadda)

Also, don't discount looking into alternative models. There are dime a dozen manufacturers that build alternatives which look fantastic at a lower cost. I'm not going to say "get a printer" but don't discount if you really start getting into the swing of things checking out if anybody prints in your area and accepts orders.

Finally, if you have never painted a miniature in your life, first off, just try whatever without fear, a couple of models that you look back at with nostalgic embarrassment is always a nice little memento to keep and it's also about losing fear. You can always course correct something as long as you aren't dumping layers over layers. Also do consider how much time you really want to invest into it. To do the really amazing shit requires lots of time, but if you just want it to look nice on the table, you can get some very nice looking stuff with minimal investment.

Wahapedia has recently partnered with a Russian 3d printing company and they're trying to offer low priced proxies for every model while being in a country GW has no legal jurisdiction in. Right now, only a handful of models are available, but they're trying to make proxies for everything eventually. I've only seen their Ork stuff and it looked great while being about half the price of GW models.

Frog it up.

I suspect that romance (including DTF) with a Battle Sister is out of character to such an extent that GW bar it, as they would for romance with a Space Marine.
Nope. In one of the Ciaphas Cain novels where he's retired (ha!) and working at a Scholam Progenium teaching the commissars-to-be one of the administrators (as in a straight-up Administratum wonk with ink-stained fingers) is banging the retired (as in too old/injured to keep fighting) SoB running the Adepta Soroitas program. Cain is very surprised because he figured he was banging one of the women servants and didn't know he had it in him to go for someone like her. Amberley Vail goes on to mention in a footnote that they actually don't have oaths of celibacy but are typically too busy with their duties to seek out partners.

No but the fact the lame ass devs already confirmed no nun with gun romance option, does.
Well, at least he have Cassia as a waifu and maybe if we are lucky the Eldar. No gonna bother with the other females other than SoB because they look frankly ass.

Speaking of romance, not long after romance was confirmed, some Fag on steam is already asking about homosexual relationships, even though is kind of a slaneshi thing.

Possibly, but just as likely the Devs are deliberately being fags, just like they were with Amiri in Pathfinder.

maybe if we are lucky the Eldar.
Eldar waifu confirmed if you poke around in the game

Arch did a stream on it. Reed how the tarantula lascannons can be anything from bolters to meltas.... I hope it is just a placeholder.

Bad news is, Arch really likes Skaven girls.

This game is propably more high profile than an offhand line in a book. If it was a SoB npc banging a priest in one sidequest GW may not care, but she is a main npc.

Is there a console or somesuch for stuff? Can you no longer change disciplines? Navigator girl is a must have, and whatever you do, pick the leader tree. It is just so damn useful, so is the navigator. She is what psykers should be, and can fire of the best spells and heal/buff and let your sniper take extra shots.

I noticed that as well. It's one of those little things where yeah I'd prefer if they did it properly, but ultimately it's so minor that if they don't it isn't exactly the end of the world IMO.

There's the Toy Box mod over on the Nexus. It's a rough and ready adaptation of the one made for the Pathfinder games so there's some useless bits in it (like the gold option). But be careful if using it because there's no inbuilt safeties so you can accidentally ruin your game, remember to save a lot, before and after.

Also I know it's beta, and one of the points of a beta is balancing, but Jesus Christ it's bad as is. The balance between melee and ranged was shit in the Alpha, and the addition of biomancy just made it worse. The Inquisitor and my Rogue Trader are basically mogging literally everything on their own. The only other character who has a chance of keeping up is Argenta when she uses the Heroic Moment thing that lets her shoot like half a dozen times in one turn.

Also I know some people bitched about the CSM fight, and I sort of understand it. Not because it's too difficult in itself, but because it's such a wild change in difficulty from literally everything else up to that point. Found a similar, but possibly even more egregious example. In one of the very first systems I explored after leaving footfall I came across a spoopy haunted AdMech station. Wandered around fixing shit, killed a couple of mooks, got to the final boss fight and then wham one of those fucking chaos dinobots with dual plasma cannons appeared and pushed my shit in.

Also on a random actual 40k note I was doing some cleaning/moving shit today and I found 4 boxes of unopened Custodes that legit must have been up on my shelves for 4 or 5 years now, since I quit the tabletop.

They have a cute Navigator and some of the other party members are an unsanctioned psyker, an eldar, a sister of battle, a space wolf, and a member of the inquisition.

This game is going to be retarded.
It could be worse. The Critical Role guys could be trying to do a role play of it. Cause seriously, that sounds like a bad CR style tabletop campaign team. Why isn't the SoB / Space Wolf killing the eldar and totally-not-Antifa psychic girl?

I'm surprised by this as I'd think that GW would consider Human/Eldar romance to be more off limits than even SoB. But perhaps this manifests more like a distant, respectful comradery compared to the other options.
Early 40k had half-eldar ultramarines, IIRC. Been ignored for a long time, but who knows.

He is back as a full eldar and Eldrad's advisor to Girlyman. The Spockseer has returned.
