To be fair, you don't really want them to have sweeping victories all the time, otherwise your fiction goes the way of Stargate, Mass Effect or Halo where humans end up ruling all they survey and all the alien races are relegated to inferior training dummies, and it's all downhill from there.

Not so sure about Halo. All the humans do there is lose and be saved by miraculous instances. 40K is less darker considering the Imperium always has plot armor and will always stand strong. Meanwhile, a Covenant scout fleet appears on the human homeworld in Halo, and they break through the much-vaunted orbital defense grid like a child prancing over a picket fence that's shorter than his legs.
That is the truth. I mean, the way the Imperial Cult satirizes Christianity is fucking hilarious. Instead of making people go ''Christians bad'', they accidentally created a church whose warrior nuns have a lot of love from the fans.

I was referring to post-Bungie era. Haven't kept up on Infinite, but I think they basically had to do a timeskip to say that humans fought a bunch of Brutes and were losing. Prior to that, you had them cranking out Spartans like mad, occupying Halos, putting down Covenant remnants, etc. It didn't feel like they were threatened much anymore.
Depending on the author either the cabinet or table field commanders or their great field commanders even the Halo wiki and all of the books contradict each other.
I suppose you can explain it with Primaris Marine reinforcements. The Imperium kidnaps biologically-fit males from some hive world dump where they used to be factory workers, brainwashes them and gives them Primaris Geneseeds for chapters that are getting nearly annihilated, then they send out these replacements to replenish nearly-decimated chapters in between the novels.
They were basically the new superpowers from Halo 4 onwards, which makes them losing to a bunch of glorified mercenary apes completely unbelievable.
The funny thing was that Sgt. Johnson stated the platforms can put a round clear through a Covenant capital ship, yet there's only 15 ships and not one of them is destroyed by the ODPs.

That is such a good looking mini. I've been a lore fag since I read the first HH book in highschool and I've read 100s of books and played most of the video games available but I'm colorblind so I've avoided buying minis or playing tabletop because of it.

The only good use I had of Citadel were there contrast paints line, mostly because where I live we haven't gotten any of the contrasts types from Vallejo or Army Painter, I do like Vallejo's Game Color line, those are rather nice to use.
