I've never ran into anyone in the community with your attitude that didn't clearly fall into category 1 or 2. My instincts haven't failed me yet. If I am wrong, you were still capable of providing the exact brand of salt that keeps making me want to do it.

Do any of your files show up in the Modelos folder? Posting so you can use it as a reference.

Nopes, though surprised by lack of 40k models, unless I missed in some of the folders. Kinda odd that MyMinifactory or Cults3D have those more.

It's only 1 folder of about 15.

Also, thanks for confirming you're a creator. Now give me the link to your maker page so I can give you some money.

Not really, only 40k discord I'm at is part of a local gaming club. An even they have 3D printing shit for models and stuff, 'course ya need to be a club member for that stuff, but's a whole different song and dance.

You could also each get a combat patrol set of an army you like, there is a game mode that specifically uses the combat patrol's contents(though your guy's loadouts are set to what the rules say, not necessarily what you want)
a little warning about combat patrols, the chapter specific space marine sets include the chapter specific shoulders and bits upgrade sprue in its discount value, so it is a bit less of a deal than you would otherwise think

Thanks, that kit looked nice because I'm into astartes like the vanilla sperg I am, while he is enamored with tyranigs, which suits me just fine. On the other hand, the combat patrols might beba better way to go, now that I'm checking out available sets. Black templars look real tempting right now...any personal chapter picks I should look into?

It looks like the ultimate starter set is essentially each respective factions combat patrol plus terrain, a board, dice, ruler, and instructions for $180(off amazon), so if you are happy with termies and he is happy with bugs, it's sounding more and more perfect for what you two are looking for.
otherwise, if you are looking at other marines it just comes down to what catches your eye, I suppose.
again, the combat patrol's bundle discount includes the upgrade sprue and its a good idea to look at the contents to see what your getting. Personally I would lean more towards the Deathwatch and Black Templars, where they give you complete sets and/or are good if you wanted to get a second one in the future to expand your army. I would avoid the Dark Angels or Blood Angels. Dark Angels for instance gives you half an intercessor box with the majority of the cost going to the dreadnaught, while the blood angels gives you half an intercessor box and half an infiltrator box so they can give you an impulsor.
 
It's not my best work, but I took this screenshot from the text adventure part of Rogue Trader and made it a blank book to be used for games.

Good, we shouldn't let patreoners make STLs for money. It should be free, that way they don't have to make it 25% different too and make it look like a cheap ripoff.

I still wouldn't use it, not unless 3d printing gets to plastic quality or the resin it uses becomes way more resilient. With GW plastics if it falls off the table it won't shatter into a grenade like resin or.... finecast metal. The latter gave me ptsd.

Nobody is arguing they should do it for free. The argument is that selling files under an honor system that nobody copies and shares them is only sustainable if your customers are more loyal to you than themselves. It's Metallica vs. Napster all over again, with the slight difference that there's not a white market for GW .stl files. It's all technically stealing, but the only people that don't acknowledge that are the 3d party modelers, even though they're the only ones GW's legal team is constantly going after. Either way, 3rd party modeling is definitely a field that can and probably will be replaced by open source AI, at least in the hobbyist space. Cutting out the middle man will ultimately result in a better experience for the user.

The strength difference isn't wildly different for bigger models. If I drop my GW doomstalker from waist heights on carpet, it will break. If I drop my 3d printed doomstalker from waist height on carpet, it will break. If I wasn't already constantly breaking official models through normal handling, I would put a lot more value in their "durability." Either way, there's a lot of options to produce models more durable than what GW offers.

Didn't know Necrons have Tripods now. I just dropped a few marines from time to time, the worst was the purity seal needing a new gluejob.

to be fair, most stuff on your list isn't even 40k, unless anyone wants to argue BIG PAULDRONS=WARHAMMER. there's a difference between a creator that piggybacks off pauldroncore (which in economical terms is just filling a different niche in terms of spending power) and creators doing their own thing and actually "deserve" that money. fuck tbh these most of them rather go the world of warcraft route than classic warhammer - at least when it comes to fantasy.

that's not meant as a simp post (and some of those creators make like 5 figures each month, so eh), but the smaller ones I have no problem sending 10 bucks a month if I like their models and think I get the value in return.

as for AI, going by 2d alone that's gonna take a long while unless you want some truly cursed chaos abominations, and after that step you still need to be able to "fix" what was generated. like 2d the ones who will really profit are the artists themselves suddenly having a massive timesaver on their hands - which they then sell directly to their customers, like they're already doing now.

without it that same crowd would just funnel that money towards established brands to consooom, just like at the average marvel/disney/funkopop-simp. that also includes games workshop.
any system that depends on rational actors falls apart if a large part behaves like niggercattle that invalidates the usual market correcting spending power of the rest.

but we're rushing head first into a major economic crisis, so things will inevitably take care of it's own (which is the bigger market correction).
