I can't speak for everyone, but my group of friends got into 40k during 9th edition because WotC had gotten so woke over the years. For the short time I've been in the hobby, it seems like popularity is rising.
I came in around early 8th. There’s been a lot of concern about the hobby “going mainstream” and getting filled with faggots and trannies but honestly I think they get curbed really fast because of how based 40k is intrinsically. Doesn’t mean I haven’t seen some freaks around the game store and on the chat server but I mean at this point the cost of male nerd hobbies is having to eggshell walk every time an ftm leaves the gooncave to stalk about the store. Not much that can be done. Popularity seems to have mostly plateaued although the game does seem to me to be less niche than a few years back.
I like the other poster also got into 40K in 9th and 10th brought in lot of other new people, so far in my decent sized local scene all the people, veteran and new, are pretty normal dudes with a couple of spergs sprinkled in, but all the weirdos who are into freak shit play Battletech and DnD at the LGS
In general I think trannies really want to be mutilated by a Haemonculus. From personal experience though I’ve met no obvious FtMs, and I can’t think of a single FtM content creator for 40k, as opposed to the 2 MtFs I know off the top of my head. The little paintbrushes prolly would remind them of painting their nails, making the lil’ doods dysphoric, as would losing models their precious pastel faggot Eldar or Tau or Spehss Mahrin army. They’d have to take a break to sob masculinely in the (women’s) restroom during their opponents turn lol. I think all this tabletop war shit is a little too male brained for most pooners to actually be able to enjoy, and it’s too expensive to easily tourist through to be “one of the doods” for a few weeks.
