Okay, so by request here's what i've been working on since the farms died:

Lots'o boyz.

Oh, and Rowboat Girlyman is back.

During the "Dark Age Of Technology," did warp travel as used by humans always involve actually going into The Warp? Or was there a time where it worked more like in Star Trek?

It always used the warp. It's just that it was "safer" because the daemons weren't as actively rapey yet.

According to the rouge trader fluff they had machines that could accurately plot and perform short warp travel jumps. It's something the navigator guilds want left lost to the ages and the ad mech would very much like to find.

I've always wanted to get into Warhammer, but I don't know where to start.

Pick an army you like the look of and grab a "start collecting" box they contain a complete starter army and are better value than buying a squad, special and HQ separately. Paint them and don't worry if you're shit at it, we all were once, even @Caddchef daubed flat shitty blobs once. Find a local club and give it a go. Also, post progress updates on here and get tips. Remember one thing, anyone who takes the piss out of your painting is insecure about their own. My local club had a guy with a gorgeously painted 'nid army who used to shit talk everyone else's work until it transpired he'd bought them ready pro painted on eBay.

EDIT: Here, maybe this will inspire you. I started 40k in the summer of 2014. Here's the first mini I painted:
IMAG0819.jpg

It's... ok. It's has no shading, the colours are lurid and I hadn't learned to use washes properly at this point. Cut to now:

Still not perfect (although I am INSANELY proud of how well the librarians face came out (front and center with the flying baby for anyone who doesn't know). Watch YouTube painting tutorials and have some fun. Remember this thread is a place you can post without anybody taking the piss out of your work, a fact which has helped me gain a lot of confidence.

Buy Orks, paint Orks, play Orks, lose with Orks, build three Supakannon Bigtrakks, laugh as your Orky Basilisks destroy everything on the field while staying out of range of those pesky lascannons.

My first mini was a Hero Quest goblin, that's how old i am, it was awful, i painted his shirt gold for some reason...

Snapped a pic of all da ladz (painted at least):

@Caddchef Orks are awesome if you want your army to be one massive Mad Max inspired stag party on acid, which is not a bad thing really. @bacterium Orks: yeah that. If you like cool tanks: Astra Militarum, cool Infantry: Space Marines, Skeletons made of metal with wierd ass snake tanks: Necrons, Emo stuff: Eldar/Dark Eldar it's all the same shit, Heavy metal: Chaos Space Marines, Awesome robot suits: Tau, there are others, but thats the meat of it.

I've not really been keeping up with 40k. Is there any hope for Tyranids on the horizon?

If rumours are correct Nids will be fighting Orks led by Ghazzy during 40k end times, so... no.

They're stirring the shit out if the fluff at the moment so anything is possible. Most of the focus ATM is on the Chaos Daemons and the rebirth of Imperial heroes and stuff since Cadia just got blasted into a million pieces then sucked into literal space hell. Roboute Guilliman is back albeit in a suit of armour that looks like it was designed for Liberachi to wear. Somebody at GW's design HQ has learned the word "Triumvirate" and decided that they need lots of those because it's the biggest word they've ever pronounced 3 times in a row.

I'm gonna shill here
If you dont want your imperial guard to look like every other player's boring vanilla generic Cadians I recommend this site because they offer a wide variety of upgrade bits that are cheaper than forge world, look better, fit better and there a wider variety of themes
they have tactical torsos, heads, legs weapons of all types and all are equipped with functional ris rails that can be used with their other acessory bits such as eotechs, grenade launchers, scopes, laser sights
