Half of their models look like starcraft space marines(kinda funny when you think about it), most of them don't even look like dwarves, and their current lore is boring as shit. Not sure what daot stuff has to do with them, because other than the votann themselves(super computers, maybe STCs) they don't use any dark age tech. They're just boring dwarves that dig holes, fight orks as their mortal enemy, and go whaling against tyranid bioships that is apparently super easy for them to do and barely eventful normally.
They're in that amazingly talented level of fuckup where they both look too much like generic scifi dwarves (Deep Rock Galactic was mentioned and I agree) AND not enough like Space Dwarves. In the end it's an extension of the Primaris problem. They don't FEEL like 40k to me. No spice to it at all. They should feel like a biker gang of old pissed off dwarves in space, big fuckoff beards and all. Their gear should look like Imperium gear only without 10,000+ years of tech stagnation and gothic themes. It doesn't. Fail.
And that's before you have shit like GW getting bored halfway and forgetting to finish the army, not putting out any real lore about them, etc. I know pulling the BL authors away from their 95th book about the heresy or how Chaos is the real victor all along and how the Emperor was a bad father
just like ADB's but they really needed some fun books about the Squats' perspective of all the big 40k shit they missed out on. A bunch of drunk dwarves fucking about in the 40k setting, their tech keeping them mostly safe while they fuck over Eldar, kill Orks, pretend to not know anything around the Imperium... Heck, what if they fucking knew about all the shit they missed as it was happening and were like "nah, no money in it, back to mining lads."
We know they can do this cause they did a book just like this for the Necrons. The Infinite and the Divine. And it was glorious.
In the end it really feels like they didn't have a plan other than "lets revive the faction." I've seen some autists do a "design compass" a-la political compass or a "design triangle" for factions before, where you put armies on a spectrum between shooty/melee, elite/horde, infantry/tanks, etc etc. (The marines, of course, fit all roles everywhere because god forbid you tell a GW employee they can't design a new marine datasheet. Hell they literally put out a Marine Blade Champion datasheet the same day they put out the Custodes Blade Champion datasheet. Here's your equal attention cake, Marines!)
This was probably GW's last chance to add a new pin to cover a missing section of that "design compass." Failing that, they could have done something amusing like taken the Space Marine line and condensed it to a few dozen datasheets and checked if anyone even noticed.
In the end they just... didn't. So now we get to wait for a faction re-relaunch in 12th or 13th edition a-la the Necrons getting their big revamp.
In another timeline, 10th edition's starter was Squats vs Orks, which would have been amusing as hell.
Edit: How bad are NuSquats? I know I've read the Squat codex's fluff, but I cannot for the life of me remember any of it. So obviously, I go back and re-read it to remember and relearn it. Only a week later, it's gone again. This has repeated 3 times that I can remember.
