I got curious if it would be possible to DIY your own plates with just a resin printer, because this is actually a neat idea in concept and shelling out 50-150 for a set of plates seems silly.

My wife already has one of those stamping kits so plates are all I would need, gonna print this one out and test it. I have the logo extruded only .2mm into a 2mm thick plate, not really sure how deep the engraving on one of those aluminum plates go. Only thing I'm really worried about is the texture of the resin, but flat planes like this usually come out pretty smooth so it might be fine.
Should only take like 20 minutes to print and another 10 minutes to clean/cure so I may have some results in an hour or so.

I won't bother posting a picture because I only got about half the logo to stamp. But its successful in principle.

First test indicates that this would depend on a lot of variables being just right when printing.

Definitely need to print something like this on a fresh FEP, too much texture comes through if you have any dings in the film like mine.

Also probably need to tinker with exposure settings to get as much detail out of the image as possible, as well as set the extrusion depth a little deeper. The wider areas of the logo came out but the pointed parts around the beak and bottom were pretty much completely lost.

Looking forward to tinkering more with this tomorrow and some fresh FEPs being delivered

I take this as a personal attack on my character. The T'au are way too clean and too few in number to be space pajeets. Their technology actually works. If anything humanity is closer to space indians. They live in shit, are pseudo religious, breed like cockroaches, and have no regard for any other culture or race. Their technology is barely functional or understood, and they only manage to survive because they breed faster than disease or workplace fatalities can kill them.
What do you think the T'au were doing before the ethereals stepped in and got them in line?

Sounds like a decent project to be able to do a few stamps on things like tanks and shields instead of having to freehand or use decals. Long term I'd question how well it could hold up to the paint you're using and whatever you're using to clean off the paint. If you really want to go hardcore with unit markings(guard army or whatever) there are some places out there that will make them out of stainless for you, when I looked a couple weeks ago it was like $30 for a single plate and then another $8 per duplicate plate after that. Makes sense because they're either doing it with a laser, or electrolysis with a vinyl mask over the steel.

Keep us posted because I'm genuinely curious how it works out.

Bambu A1 does plain ol' PLA as the cost for the other machines starts getting a little silly. I would get the P1S or X but ill probs need to vent it out the window properly with other materials. And honestly, don't know if I would need anything other than PLA. Not educated enough on materials and pros/cons. I just know I shouldnt huff it like Horus and Chaos juice.

I've been tempted to 3d print stamps, plates and rollers with it too as the applications are pretty endless. Yeah it wont last forever, but will still take a while to deteriorate.

You can still buy/build an enclosure for an A1, just makes it take up more space and at that point you can use more materials. My reason for avoiding PLA at times is that the car can get hot enough to warp it in the summer (around 55-60C, PETG generally does better around 65-70C. If you're not concerned with that, may as well stick with PLA). ABS/ASA does a better job of taking a beating(and temp as it's heat deflection temp is usually somewhere around 100C making it a non-issue for most things). HIPS filament(same shit GW uses for minis) is available, but it usually costs 2-4x as much as the normal stuff per spool so people tend to only use it for support interface materials(because it'll dissolve in solvents that won't affect some of the other filaments).

As far as the stamps/plates/rollers for basing and terrain, yeah it'll deteriorate but just print another one for 10 cents when it does.

I have created something following tonight's Rogue Trader game. Please enjoy.

>High Lords of Terra bow to the Bogdanoffs
>In contact with Old Ones
>Rumored to possess Alpha+ Psyker abilities
>Control the Segmentum Obscurus
>Own Orbital Stations and Scriptorums across the Galaxy
>Direct descendants of the Pre-fall Aeldari Bloodlines
>Will bankroll the first cities in the Crone Worlds (Bogdanorragh will be the first city)
>In the process of terraforming Armaggeddon as their own personal planet
>own basically every Biologos research facility on Terra
>first designer eldar-human hybrids will be Bogdanoff Babies
>both brothers said to have 400+ IQ
>Ancient Pre-Imperial scriptures tell of two angels who will descend upon Terra and will bring an age of Enlightenment and uprecedented technological progress with them
>These are the Bodganoff twins
>They own Wraithbone R&D labs around the galaxy
>You likely have Bogdabone inside of you right now
>Every child has the mark of path of the Bogd implanted in them at birth
>The Bogdanoffs are in regular communications with the Gods Khaine and Cegorach, forwarding the word of Asuryan to the Craftworld priesthoods
>Discovered the Ark of Omen
>They learned fluent High Gothic in under a week
>Inquisitor Ravenor allows them full access to the evidence of the DAOT within the Pyramids
>Imperial Ordos entrust their Adamantine reserves with the twins. There's no adamantine in Ft. Knoxius, only Ft. Bogdanoff
>The twins are 67,000 years old, from the space-time reference point of the base Eldar
>In reality, they are timeless beings existing in all points of time and space from the big bang to the end of the universe
>They have been able to access the Black Library record since birth, and have spoken about what they saw while they were newborns
>The Bogdanoffs will guide the galaxy into a new age of wisdom, peace, and love

Even in aussie summer, it wouldnt get that hot to warp my bases and terrain imo. No way im sweating it out in the summer in a room full of nerds. But knowing my options helps. I have been very tempted to 3d print a home defence chainsword, maybe thats where the tougher materials come into it.

Maaaaaybe the $500 difference between A1 and P1S for enclosure and the chance of printing other materials is worth it, its something I'll need to think about a bit longer.

I backed these guys not too long ago. 10 pounds of air dry hobby clay is freaking nothing compared to other materials. Just need some hobby space to try them out.

As for stamps, there's one out there of a greenstuff stamp that lets you stamp an infinite number of skulls on something, like a Imperial Knight armor plate.

Unfortunately haven't found as many others as I'd like. The guys who do the first one have a MMF page up and a ton of useful ones, like ork symbols stamps or a roller for making greenstuff fur cloaks. It (and terrain) is kind of their thing.

I am very very tempted by that WE combat patrol in conjunction with the old combat patrol. The only reason I wont is I already have chaos trim to do.

Speaking of which, put my name down at the LGS for the EC combat patrol. Combined with the Champions of Slaanesh box, amazing start to an army.

I just started reading Eisenhorn because I've seen people say it's a good place to start for 40k novels.
I like it so far, but my eyes almost fell out rolling when Eisenhorn describes the 'smell of cordite' in the air.

Why do authors do this? Eisenhorn doesn't know what cordite is or what it smells like.
hell, the author doesnt even know what it smelled like. Probably nobody currently living does. It was a gunpowder only made for like 40 years at the end of the 19th century in a very specific location in England.
By his time it literally would not have existed for over 38 thousand years.

Or is this author a secret genius and it's just fitting for the theme of 'the imperium uses a bunch of ancient tech they barely understand because muh admech?'

I have doubts
BritBongs are nogun faggots and have no experience with them. Simple as.

Why do you think the Bolt Pistol is such a stupid design?

Yeah, that patrol is nice. If I hadn't already gotten in my pre-order for Flawless Blades when they went up last weekend I'd have gone for it. I'm hoping to bag a Kakophonist at my local GW this weekend. Might also grab Lucius if they have him and depending how much painting I get done this week. Fulgrim will have to wait.

What in the world is the point of all these different factions and chapters and successors that have fuck all info on them beyond like a single sentence like "fought in the battle of Dickshit McCunt Punter in the Smegmentum Foreskinia. Colors are quartered brown and orange. Heraldry/Insignia unknown"?

Is this shit for homebrew purposes for people too lazy to come up with a name and color scheme themselves, a retarded attempt at fluff to make the verse feel larger without having to actually come up with anything, both?

Basically just as a starting point for homebrew yes.

An attempt to make the world seem a bit larger. When writing up the battle of Dickshit McCunt Punter in the Smegmentum Foreskinia, the universe would be terribly small if it were just the Ultramarines every time and it's not exactly difficult to come up with a quick name and scheme.
Failing to do this and having the same handful of major characters involved in every incident is one of the problems with modern fluff.

It's also a starting point for homebrew if you do happen to be inspired by any of the throwaways.

What the others said.

Some of them are also homebrew armies of various people of note. I want to say there were some white dwarf staff that had homebrew chapters that are semi canon? I remember a contest for people to invent a chapter, and GW would pick their favourite to be made canon. I think the result was Legion of the Damned, which iirc even had their own minis as a result?

Not to be a broken record, but there was a bigger focus on this back in the day. 1000 chapters of 1000 marines. Early starter sets used to feature black templars, crimson fists, dark angels, blood angels, and other chapters and sub-factions. The stars of Dawn of War were Blood Ravens. Not like today where the Ultramarines do everything. And back in the day, this was a few pages of a codex. Some example paint schemes and lore ideas for how to make "your guys". Now in the age of fan wikis, everything has to be catalogued and memorized.
"Oh, you never heard of the Obscurum Kiwis Chapter? Get the fuck out tourist!"

It's not just Space Marines. There used to be many guard legions but now everything is Cadia and Krieg. Mordian, Catachan, Vostroyan, Praetorian. Steel Legion being semi-retconned out of Armageddon to make room for more Krieg is considered to be a betrayal in part because of this.

Plus it's just fun. There are some neat ideas that are fun to play around with.
