It's very convoluted, but from what i'v gathered from the comments on moddb: for some time certain members of the main team were turning into gooners and around last year one of the lead devs, Stranger, trooned out and started to show typical troon behaviour: focusing on graphical "overhaul" of models (examples shown above), drama about not having their way and being always the smartest on the team and introducing unnesecary ideological angle to their work. When the additional devs/hanger-on's started to push back against this bullshit, they got booted from dev discord server and their work appropriated without recognition. This created the schism withing the core team and lead to the troon dev throwing a fit and just quiting alltogether. After that, the lead dev, Clockwork, also abandoned the project (although the timeline is a bit unclear, i'm not sure if Clockwork quit first or Stranger). After that, some of the other devs decided to pick up the pieces and with the DE edition on the horizon, reorganized and continued working on the mod.
Unification mod have a MUCH stable dev team, although they do take their time, updating their mod for DE (they mentioned something about waiting for the "patch-period" to end and then to update the mod to the newest version, but, since Relic decided to extend the patching till the end of the year, i think we will have to wait at least 4 months.
You can dig through the comments on the main mod page yourself, but i think those few encapsulates UA problems:
