So what's the legit cost of entry nowadays. Not sperg tier one of each army but retail beginner tier army, books, and whatever else one would need.

With the advent of Open Play, you can just grab a Start Collecting box and start playing. People that aren't rampaging assholes will happily join in some Open Play games.

If you're cagey, you can go for 1000 points of Space Marines or Chaos Marines for well under 200 dollars. I did. In fact, you could simply buy three copies of Know No Fear, sell what you don't need to recoup at least a hundred bucks, and you're set for $140.

If they're dead set on 40k why not try them with Necromunda? You can get a whole gang for £25 and the game is being expanded all the time (also there's the gang progression element that's pretty fun).
If it wasn't in.blood bowl I know little about it.

I'm guessing it's like 40k but smaller scale in terms of army size?

Bloody hell, I finally decide to leave the Lolcow section of the forums and find a nice little thread devoted to 40k.
I love the fuck out of this franchise, even with how badly GW has mishandled it in the past. It's a damn fine universe where the bad guys are militant fascist religious zealots who have no qualms about torturing or murdering you and the good guys are too!

(Slight :powerlevel: here)
First time I ever played was when I was 9. My uncle and his friend were playing a game in his den (Which was my grandmother's basement, at the time he was living with her having gotten out of jail after getting popped for trying to sell pot to a cop) and I was instantly fascinated. I was rather keen on playing chess at the time, and this looked like an obsessively detailed themed chess game.
Well, after a week of watching few of their battles I finally asked if I could play. They both agreed that I could and my uncle put me in command of a squad of 4 Ultramarines.

Long story short, my uncle's friend underestimated my understanding of the game and the tactics involved. I did some pretty severe damage with those 4 Ultrasmurfs, despite losing 3 of them in the battle. My uncle won.
Instantly hooked. All my allowance was then spend on miniatures that I spent hours painting, only to strip the paint and paint them again once I didn't fucking suck at it.

Eventually I started putting together my own custom army that was basically the Lost 2nd Legion. I even managed to lorefuck the whole thing and start including altered miniatures from other franchises like Battletech due to the backstory of my legion. Even went so far as to make an Ork Space Marine (He wasn't really an Ork, just a very mindfucked 2nd Legion Astartes Terminator who was utterly convinced of his Orkiness)

Fuck I miss this game, but I really don't like the prices GW currently sells a lot of individual models for. But with the advances in affordable 3D printing I may well decide to get into it again.

Being a massive autist, I do plan on my ork army having looted stuff they really shouldn't have from every sci-fi franchise I'll be able to make fun of.

Orkses is made for lootin!

Bit i like wot you sez.

Does anyone have a link to some kind of text-only version for the basic rules for 8th edition?

I find the free pdf available from GW far too cluttered.

Fluff question: how many people in the Imperium know about the Ruinous Powers and the nature of the Warp?

Very few. Inquisitors of course and high ranking officials. As well as people those who can be expected to be exposed to it in their line of work, like navigators, arbities and Space marines to an extent, etc.

I'd imagine it'd be on the level of the number of people being let in on the truth about alien landings IRL if the conspiracy theories were actually true.

"If you’re curious about the characters and the settings of their adventures, pop over to the Warhammer Adventures website and poke around. They have sections for both Warhammer 40,000 and Warhammer: Age of Sigmar. Those sections have a bit of the backstory for each character and give you a feel for the setting. Based on the descriptions you get the idea that these stories are going to focus on fairly typical pre-teen story themes: friendship, bravery, honestly, problem/mystery solving. Think Scooby-Doo, but with Space Marines/Stormcast Eternals."

For the first time ever, my toy soldiers seem slightly uncool to me. I can now picture Rose Tico blasting Hormagaunts and quipping the whole time, and I do not like it.
