I had to explain this to a buddy of mine with a background in D&D recently. It helped to lay things out for him like traditional alignments, but without the law vs chaos axis since "lawful" is subjective. The goodest guys in 40k are Slann and Tyranids, who are middle-ground neutral. One step closer to evil is the Imperium, Eldar, Orcs and Necrons. All of these factions do some pretty horrible things, but for honest reasons.

Next are the Tau due to their use of subversion and apartheid, followed finally by the forces of Chaos and the Dark Eldar.

The only "good" group are probably the Catachan barking toads.
