There's a time and place. He could've turned it down but I bet working at/with GW was potentially a dream job - a lot of talented and passionate fans get scooped up by the studios they created content for, GW was just rather slow about it. We also don't know what's more important to him - money, or a creative legacy? I'm as cynical as anyone here about 40k getting woke infested or fan creators being driven into corporate slavery, but this is better than the alternative for him and the others.
GW is completely within their rights to protect their IP but they still allow plenty of fan merch, it's just that there really isn't much of it compared to other hobbies/fandoms. I think this is a good way to excite existing fans with quality content made by people who actually love 40k. Of course with that there may be more mainstream exposure, but such is life...
Tell me more? I'm trying to find shouty boys instead of paying 30 for a single unit.
Here's an example.
The new Heavy Intercessor comes with 5 (or 3) bodies, but enough heads / arms / weapons to make way more minis. Pretty standard, right?
So some smartass has made a complete torso proxy that is 99% the same or closer. Buy a kit of Heavy Intercessors, print yourself a body for the spare parts you have.
(Did you accidentally print too many torsos though? No problem, same person made a file of the arms + guns + shoulderpad.)
Need a backpack? There's a zip with every Space Marine Firstborn backpack GW has ever made.
But 25 individual backpacks aren't cool, we can do better.
How about 112 different Primaris Beaky helmets?
But that's not cool enough. How about a Blender file with every single bit and bob and doodad on the helmets in what amounts to Photoshop layers, so you can literally randomize your heads or customize them in whatever way you might possibly ever want?
Hey but Blender's cool. It can do cool things.
How about a fully rigged, poseable Primaris Marine 3D model that you can put in literally any pose and then export as a file for a 3D Printer to print? That'd be cool, right?
Ah, but it's lacking some of the bits and bobs.
Like all the Bolt Rifle variations (like, 30 of them)
Or Purity Seals
Or random grimdark doodads
And this is just stuff I found at a quick glance at a publicly facing site, after GW has been sending takedown requests left and right. God only knows what people are doing in private.
That poseable rigged marine, or the build-your-own-helmet file are what I was thinking of when I said GW's in deep shit. If I can just pop open Blender and mix-and-match kitbash options to build a marine just like how I want it in just the right pose...
