The goal is to have a 2500 point army by the time I'm done painting and ready to play 6th ed.
 
Creative Assembly already said they tried something more "reprensentative" before TW:W3 release.
This the same CA that had their art director Baj Singh sexually harass and bully half the women in the company.

I think WFRP had the right approach. Writing a dystopia or non-woke society doesn't mean they endorse it.

Part of the problem imo. ToW now suffers from this as well, but WHFB and pre 8th (really pre 7th) 40k were at there best when they were a setting with multiple eras. The progressive narrative feels like there's constant shark jumping and is way too focused on a handful of characters, each more powerful and unbeatable than the last. I tuned out of 40k when Primaris showed up and only get bits of the new stuff from youtube shorts when I'm frying my brain on the toilet.
Warhammer was always about the setting. The characters don't matter, the events don't matter. Warhammer is, I'm a faux German noble in an evocative hat, I'm in an unwinnable situation, my city is surrounded by cyclopean rapists and goat-faced cannibals, my daughter has probably taken to worshiping Tzeentch in secret, and here I stand with a flintlock pointed at Morrslieb itself. The characters are just vessels by which the setting can be explored, their personalities are irrelevant, all that matters is that they survive. It used to be pulpy action/horror, now it's WarCraft, nothing more, nothing less, but that's enough for most people I think. Most people just want to buy shit and don't really care what emotion the setting evokes.

The same can be said of 40K. A lot of the fiction that was written in the past on small corners of Codexes or in White Dwarf skirted horror or despair. The first Tau codex had a short story where some Eldar Rangers were ambushed by Kroot and eaten alive, Asdrubael Vect's premiere had a story where a tortured Imperial has a chat where Vect shows to delight in their suffering. These kinds of stories were part of what I liked most about 40K and a lot of Fantasy, and that grimdark-ish atmosphere really drove home the miserable war aspect of it. Having it replaced by what feels like Space Marine masturbation all-day-every-day was pretty sad.

Warhammer Monthly was a treasure too.
