All the low-budget independent stuff on streaming tends to be pretentious "indie" arthouse hipster shit anyway. The stuff that's just independent and not specifically "indie" tends to be foreign releases and older pre-Current Year fare that gets a pass due to obscurity or established B-Movie outfits with a grandfather clause situation like Blumhouse, Full Moon, Troma, and The Asylum

Plus, there's the issue of killing the capeshit fad, among other cancers in Hollywood that won't go away without the threat of box office flops

If I could make a low-budget or no-budget horror movie self-published through Amazon, I'd try to push for a physical release first (DVD would be the cheapest and most viable option) as a gimmick to promote it, and then do the streaming release a month or two after the DVD is out

I've tried to watch some of their low tier content and it's amazing how low quality some of that shit is.
If you have a movie that has images and sound, they'll take it.

I find I'm far less concerned about my ability to continue purchasing "indie" movies on physical media a few years in the future compared to big studio films thanks to indie-focused imprints like Criterion and Shout Factory. I am aware that Criterion has expanded to streaming but I don't think they're planning on abandoning physical releases.

I haven't been to a theater since 1997. I saw The Lost World at one of the few single screen old school theaters that was left around here. The last one to close was actually a porno theater.

Multiplex screens are trash compared to the old big screens. That's what I was used to and when a neighbor took us to see one of those Honey I Shrunk The Kids sequels at a multiplex I was astounded how small and cruddy the screen was. I went to the matinee at the single screen theater almost every weekend. It was one of those $2 theaters and you just had to wait about a week to see the new releases.

Maybe those Imax ones are better. I have no idea.

So I have no love for theaters or have any idea how much a ticket costs. I'd rather watch movies at home. But if you like the theater experience it sucks that this is a sign of the times.


I think it was inevitable that things wold go this way. It was only a matter of time. Plus it's way cheaper. I am on a metered connection right now and I'm not paying for any more services. But I do get by. Very few new movies interest me anyway. The most recent ones I saw were 1917 (no one liked it here but me) and The Irishman. I'm more into weird indie films and classic horror at the moment.

If not enough people sign up to watch $200 million superhero film, then they just never make a sequel. look at netflix. everyone is angry because their budgets are low and the shows rarely get more than 3 seasons. but its like that because the stats show its the best way to do streaming. I remember reading that essentially every movie bombs on netflix, but as long as it keeps people interested they keep making them.
Netflix basically is like 90s cable. tv shows with a handle of episodes and 3 seasons, with shitty original movies. but it keeps the lights on.

Warner bros essentially just admitted its getting out of the movie business to go for cheaper mediums. and they're using their last big budget movies to try it out. its a great idea because coronavirus basically has shut down the pipeline for over 2 years, its not like we're going to get high quality product until 2022 at this point anyways,

The only way I can see this making sense is if they recognize that the theatrical run gains in the US were done after 30 days, and go about getting foreign money instead. For example, Tenet got released in Indian theatres yesterday, and they're planning to put it on streaming and physical copy on Dec. 15.

Although, I don't know if that's a viable idea because of all those pirates tossing around free copies of the HD version of the movie even if it was released in theatres only. That's money lost.

Netflix-produced shows do have shit quality, especially nowadays. I watched Pine Gap and it was so fucking boring I couldn't continue, and it was only six episodes.

That's insane. I guarantee there's pirates in India just selling cam copies on the street. I heard that in China, Hollywood had a policy of countering piracy by making their movies available asap for $1.
