Short answer, no.

Long answer, fuck no. Just like Snorlax he was negligent at best and abusive at worst. One thing people on the Farms seem to miss is that he was still a shitty parent- he just wasn't as shitty as Barb so he gets off lightly with things. Bob was still an aging redneck and the fact none of his other kids wanted anything to do with him speaks volumes.
Pretty much.

Bob was also a less overt bad parent. Where Barb got by on pure stubbornness and volume, Bob got by on gamesmanship, what with his myriad lawsuits, the unclear circumstances surrounding Chris's SSDI application, and his willingness to skim from it.

A magnificent bastard is still a bastard.

I don't think Bob was a bad parent.

Thanks to him, the abject failure wound up with a job-getting associate's degree. Of course, Bob was no miracle worker and couldn't make Chris actually get a job with it.

Call Bob racist, homophobic, transmisogynistic or whatever you 21st centurians like to say these days. But Chris really isn't that racist. CWCki has run with that narrative ever since he said he didn't want to date black girls, which always bothered me because personal preferences in dating is someone everyone, even Chris, should be entitled to. He called Tito a nigger once, but that was one rare instance. I don't know a single black dude that hasn't called a white person a cracker or whiteboi at some point in their lives, be it behind the scenes or in public. It, for whatever reason, is simply seen as far worse for a white person to have a single such moment. I think we're all a little racist. It's human nature to flock to one's own and push aside what isn't alike. Doesn't mean he's actually hateful towards black people, as his friendship with Lars in the Lars call demonstrated.

Mashed Potato brings up some great points about Bob's unrealistic attitude about Chris's development. But I also feel that when you're in your 80s, the only two people in your life are insane, and the only son in your life is a failure, you're probably going to try to convince yourself of something like that as a defense mechanism.

Bob was definitely a better parent than blarb. I'd say he did okay, but he was pretty lenient on CWC. Bob said some racist things, but that's just everybody. He probably was a little racist, but he wasn't in the klan or something stupid like that. He just wasn't ready for an autistic son. He did some things that I don't agree with, but he had shining moments.

Bob is the one who told Chris not to get a job because he would get more money by collecting benefits (totally untrue, as it were). Big mistake, really robbed Chris of continued social interaction after his education ended.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Bob was also the impetus in Chris getting hired at Wendy's, and he was certainly the impetus in Chris getting a non-fuzzy Associate's (as opposed to one completely useless in the job market). I wonder how much stuff like Bob saying to Chris "just take the SSI and don't work" was him, internally on a psychological level, giving up on Chris and justifying it in a way to put both of them at ease.

Anyways. We know Barb is definitely the shittiest of the two, but how much better was Bob, really? Discuss.

I think Bob was a flawed but well intentioned parent to Chris. I think he realized he'd screwed up as a father earlier in his life and wanted to do right by Chris, but was too worn out and old to do as much good as he wanted. One thing he got right was getting the :tugboat: set up, and setting aside some money before he kicked the bucket. Which Barb then idiotically squandered on a doomed legal defense that would have had the same outcome with a public defender or one of those $5K flat fee criminal defense guys in the yellow pages.

Why was he a shitty parent? In what ways?
Supervise him? Hell no. Moving the PS3 out of Chris's fortress of solitude would have been a small action to take and protected Chris a bit more though.
Why would Bob have to supervise Chris on the PS3? Chris didn't have problems with the internet, as far as Bob could tell. Internet harassment, to Bob, sounds as ridiculous as penpal harassment.

The people harassing the Chandlers were a bunch of hateful assholes at the game place, who like to pick on retarded kids for their own amusement; again, this was only as far as Bob could tell.

Oh, absolutely. So, first of all, Chris was very, very uncomfortable with saying the word "nigger". The idea of saying it was so offensive to Chris that when forced to, he munged it to "niggo". Not out of any genuine concern for other people, just because he knew it was a very big "no no word", like a small child might understand. He later started saying nigger after we normalized it with him.

And yeah, a gay man isn't sexist for finding women unattractive.

Chris wouldn't maintain a job at the time. So sure, three months on minimum wage with enough hours is more than three months of a tugboat. But not if those three months are scattered throughout a year, and compared to a full year of tugboat.

That money could've gone to supporting Chris after Barb kicked it. But why would Barb care about Chris' future?

He would have been even 15 years prior to Chris' birth and from all we can see all of his other kids went on to be successful people with their own lives. Why that stopped is anyone's guess. I think Bob was just old and tired by the time Chris was an adolescent, he tried to help Chris along with school and being successful, but senility and various stresses caused him to withdraw more and more. He likely harbored a few racist and homophobic beliefs, but in his day and age I'd actually be a little surprised if he didn't back then at the very least (and I'd say that of any American of any ethnicity). Bob tried, but his age, health, senility, and Barb undermined him. He seemed to do a good job with his prior kids, and his failing at Chris so late in his life really isn't his fault. Was he kind of racist or annoying by our days standards? Yeah I get that. Was he a terrible parent who did nothing right by his son though? No. Chris was more failed by Barb who was far more mobile and influential than Bob and easily more self serving and by Chris' own mental state that neither parent clearly understood.

Don't forget that bob was married before and he had another son and a daughter, one is an ophthalmologist and the other one is working for the gov, both with successful families too, so he wasn't a failure as a parent until that moment.
Then he ended taking care of barb (who poisoned his relationship with his old family) and his autistic child. Bob literally saved chris' life with the tugboat, but old and tired there is a moment when you don't, or you just can't give a shit anymore. Let's say that he just tried and he didn't deserve to die under piles of trash being eaten alive by bedbugs.

Bob was better thant Barb for sure, but both were not good parent(For Bob,atleast he was decent) they never add a firm grip him,no discipline at all, they let him grow up as manchild without saying anything and never sent him to a special school that probably would have helped him.At least Bob tried a lot to help Chris ,but it was too late and he gave up and also didnt understand a lot of things about what was happening with Chris.Add to that the fact that Barb was a shitty parent that didnt help at all.

Pretty much, And, given all of Bob's own weaknesses and lack of real understanding of how screwed up Chris was, he still went to some great strides to TRY filing off some of Chris' rougher edges, but age and the fact Chris had so much more wrong with him than Bob's efforts could handle meant it was a mostly failed effort.

Overall, even now, I still feel some pity for Bob even with all the negative taken into account because it's obvious he tried to do some good by Chris in his own way.

That time he made a video directed at "Tito" where he called him a "...trollin' stupid, pickle-suited...NIGGER!" he did not seem to be hesitant to say it. He seemed like he wanted to call "Tito" the worst name he could think of and had no qualms going racist to do it.

I mean you can say that he doesn't understand the word in terms of how it makes others feel (autistic, lack of theory of mind, etc) but then there's the Sonichu comic where he drew Obama dressed as a Muslim painting the White House black. Granted this was from Bob, but I have to wonder if Bob didn't instill a little latent racism in Chris.

Bob's mediocre at best parenting got them into the situation, but at that point Bob was not physically capable of stopping Chris.

Despite the fact that Chris was twice Bob's size, I could still picture Bob using his "old man strength" and twisting Chris's arms behind his back if Chris ever got really feisty with him, especially considering how pathetically weak and out of shape Chris is.

*Bob twisting Chris's arms behind his back*
"I told you for the last time Christian, go pick up your goddamn lego before I step on it!"

Bob taught Chris some of his worst habits by setting him up on disability and constantly bailing him out of financial trouble whenever Chris maxed out his credit cards.

In most cases, I'm against parents being overbearing on their children and 'forcing' them to do things, but in Chris' case - being well into his 20's with no job, wasting hundreds of dollars on video games and toys and generally being a leech on society - I think Bob should have taken charge. Take away his credit cards, get him off disability, make him get a real job, and teach him how to function in the real world.

Instead, while he may have "tried" to be a good parent, he was no better than Barb. He coddled his son until he died, and now Chris is in his 30's, still playing with Lego, still convinced Sonichu will eventually be successful, all without a damn clue on how to actually improve himself in any way.

That's the time I was talking about.

tbh, i don't think that's so bad.
bob realized chris could only do so much, problem is bob gave chris less credit than he should have.
bob just gave up too soon, but like others pointed out, he's old.
and for his age, he actually did more than most others of his generation would have.

4. He firmly believes that his son's cartoon character is an international success.
he's not incorrect
