Weight loss support thread

Part of my diet is removing soda, it helps a lot. Of course I have a lot of willpower and its not easy to give up.

Brother, another important aspect is believing in yourself. You can lose weight, man. You just gotta believe it is possible as well.
A great statement, Hulk! I'll keep it in mind when I go to the gym in ~30 mins.

Is it just me or is right before your period the worse time for you in terms of eating. Yesterday, I overate the first time in over a month and this morning I woke up to my period.

The mentioning of uteruses (uteri? Uteresis? Utopia?) used to make me extremely uncomfortable, especially when applying to friends or family (even recently, I had to step out of a doctor's office because he was asking my sister about it), but now I'm... kind of, I guess, better about it.

I wouldn't really know much about it because I would actively go out of my way to avoid talking about it, but in my field, I'm gonna have to cross that bridge eventually. So all I can really think of right now is that there probably is a connection. I know it plays a role in emotional stuff, and overeating is linked to mental/emotional stress. Can't... really say much else. Maybe I should suck it up, be a man, and learn about this sort of thing, especially if I want kids...

Yeah, I get cravings. I don't binge because bloating, but that's not an uncommon thing with PMS. To prevent overeating, I'd eat fiber rich foods (fruits, veggies, beans, nuts, whole grains, flax, etc.). But don't forget to chase it down with plenty of water or else it'll stick like lumpy concrete in your stomach. Here, lemme pour you a glass.

Regarding water, because I have a sweet tooth I like to add a little bit of fruit juice to my water so it has flavor. It makes it taste like Gatorade, but it's probably a lot cheaper and healthier!

I really need to get back into the swing of things with my weight loss goals. I was doing fairly well at the beginning of the year, but life gets in the way. I especially need to consider health conditions and how a change in lifestyle will help for the better.

MyFitnessPal is a wonderful tool I've used to track foods and whatnot. Picking up a Brita water bottle has also helped me drink more water. My biggest weakness is soda and desserts at work. Working in a kitchen has its advantages and disadvantages.

Fortunately, my boss has been scheduling me more serving hours than dish washing hours, so I can get a bit more active there. Wii Fit is also my friend for days off, doesn't make much noise for neighbors, and is quite fun.

Moving to the Hulkmania subforum as the demandments of Hulkamania will guide us all.

On topic, however, I'd strongly suggest everyone stop drinking all forms of soda. I completely wrecked my diet by picking up soda again. It makes me crave sweets like crazy and I firmly believed for years that aspartame had no affect on my appetite. It totally fucking does. Avoid it like cancer, because it is.

I went from 290 to about 220 by doing paleo a la archevore: http://www.archevore.com/get-started/. Keep in mind that as a relatively low-earning person, I didn't do much about staying away from factory meats, so that was without switching to grass-fed anything. When my ex basically demanded I spend all my time with her, and refused to stick to such a diet herself, I found myself back on old eating habits and ballooned to 260 again. Now I'm down to 235 by managing to keep to low-carb, low-grain, low-processed ma-a-aybe 1/2 the time. At 6'4", this isn't exactly ridiculously fat, but I still have about 20-30 lbs before I'll feel good about myself.

I supplement this with exercise as follows: modified Starting Strength (add 5 sets of chinups each day) plus some running (about 1.5 miles now, working more for better speed than longer distance at the moment), 3 days per week. It makes for about 1 hour per session in the gym.

My biggest problem is with sticking to the diet. I'm full-time work AND full-time school so it's difficult to find the time to cook for myself, but I can usually knock out something over the weekend to eat all week. However, the bad foods are literally addictive. So even though I have about a pound and a half of beef brisket in my bag to split over lunch and dinner, I got nachos from Qdoba and some Cold Stone. A SMALL Cold Stone, which is a step in the right direction for me, but just a baby step.

Even with a high-fat, low-carb diet to reduce hunger while providing adequate nutrition, finding the difference between hungry and bored is difficult for me.

Y'all may find it interesting that carbs are actually the only unnecessary macronutrient. You must have some fat, or you will die. You must have some protein, or you will die. It is entirely possible to live and thrive without a single gram of dietary carbohydrate, thanks to the body's mechanisms for ketosis and gluconeogenesis. This is not to say I suggest a zero-carb diet although it seems to be a very helpful thing for controlling epilepsy and diabetes, possibly for minor help of autism as well (research, IIRC, is inconclusive), and for drastic weight loss. You would have to supplement or eat organ meats though. Adrenal glands are rich in vitamin C, but I far prefer to get it from fruits and vegetables myself.

This is true. It also stimulates insulin secretion which contributes to insulin resistance (AKA type 2 'beetus) and, if consumed with a meal, causes storage rather than use of the calories.

I have a question for those of you who gained weight due to medication. How does that happen? What i mean is, does the medication screw up your metabolism, or cause you to retain water, or what? It seems crazy to me that a medicine that is supposed to help your mind is doing that to your body, and I'm just curious as to why that happens.

Depends on the medication. Some, like corticosteroids (often prescribed for inflammations or autoimmune disease) basically make you hungry all the time. ALL the time. Insatiably. They also make you retain water, which contributes to weight and puffiness. And they make you super bitchy.

Antidepressants, it may be just a factor of making you motivated to eat enough again.

Something else relevant to drinking more water. This how to remind yourself throughout the day.

No, no, keep going, I like learning.

After the whole pizza and crying in bed thing, I think I'm ready to get back on track with this diet thing (or at least getting a steady one). I had an egg, a bagel, and half a slice of ham so far. Oh, and coffee. Is it wise to skip lunch? Didn't really want to, but I just sort of did. Been skipping it since 2012 anyways... Dinner's going to be fajitas, rice & beans, cottage cheese, and pico de gallo. Current water count: 3 bottles because I was distracted by DnD today. Condition of environment by the time I toss all these bottles in the recycling bin: devastated. Walked (or maybe just paced) 2.2 miles so far. No exercise outside of daily routine planned for today.

Is this good? I can probably cut back on amount of things per meal, but I don't plan on filling my plate or anything. I usually have many more bottles of water behind me by 3:30, but it was a slow day. If you're going to ask why I buy bottled water, our filters are busted and we never had the money to get them fixed. So it's either consume all that nasty bottled water bacteria or pretty much drink piss. Tempted by the pecan pie that's going to be made tonight, not sure if it'd be wise to grab a slice or not.

I'm really missing fruit in my diet, aren't I? I would buy a ton if the shopping was up to me, but I guess I'll have to rely on the orange and cranberry juice we have in the fridge right now. I don't want to take any chances with that old bottle of V8 we have sitting in there...

I agree concerning soda. I'm going to try to drink as little as possible from now on, because I knew it was bad but I didn't know how bad it was.

Keep saying your prayers, eating your vitamins and training, brothers.

May I introduce you (and those interested) to the Water Bobble? I'm poor as hell and can't afford buying cases of water, so this is my little lifesaver.

Oh, I heard about those. They're pretty neat. Although the bottled water isn't for me. We're six people living in one house, so it kind of sort of makes sense that we buy cases of bottled water. I mean, life would be a lot more fun and convenient if we just had the damn filters fixed, but still.

Oh, and on the subject of local water, there was recently this big huge thing about water supply in these two tiny towns in the county. Their water is absolutely disgusting. It's green, and there's crap in it. If they accepted the offers to be incorporated with the town, we'd have water out there, but politicians (I shit you not, they really did this) told them to just boil the water and stop crying. Democratic left wing politicians told a small town with disgusting green water to just, "boil it." Meanwhile, our water isn't much better anyways for obvious reasons. Understand that even if the filters weren't busted, I'd still be drinking some pretty sick shit, which is why those bottles with the filters inside and those filters you can buy and attach to your tap are life savers. I really am envious of my grandparents. They've had their house since 1972 and hardly ever worried about the filters. They always have a pitcher of water available whenever I visit.

Wow, I always knew soda wasn't good for you, but I was shocked to learn that chemicals in soda could become benzene and formaldehyde. Good thing I never drink it. They should take all soda vending machines out of school.

Gonna try to make more fruit smoothies instead of junk food:

That's a little more than a half of a cup of raspberries, a half a banana, a few ice cubes and lemon juice. It tastes like sour skittles, no joke. :heart-full: Also I really love my little blender, it kind of reminds me of Tom Servo when he had his temporary "haircut". :asperchu:
