Building routines are basically a combo of (1) make doing the right thing as easy as possible and (2) make doing the wrong thing as hard as possible. Anytime you fail to stick to your routine, really dig down and try to find the reason why.Any tips for sticking to a routine would be greatly appreciated
- Problem: Sometimes I would arrive at the gym and realize I forgot to put my running shoes in the gym bag, then slide into excuses about how it's not worth going back for them, might as well skip this workout, etc. Solution: My old shoes live in my car now. If I forget to bring my good shoes, I'll always have a slightly busted backup pair on hand.
- Problem: Absolutely ravenous after work, end up rushing home to eat rather than stopping by the gym as planned. Solution: Meal plan better so I get a properly satiating lunch on gym days. Move my lunch time to later so I'm not as hungry at 5 pm.
- Problem: Vaguely reluctant and just "not feeling it." Solution: Designate a good ebook or podcast as "gym only," i.e. I can only listen to the next chapter while working out. This is particularly nice because the reward happens while you do the workout. Examine my routine and realize I'm particularly demotivated by specific lifts; replace them or move them to weekends where I'm more likely to have extra energy for them.
