Wendigoon Thread

So I'm trying to search up the blood divers cryptid, but I'm honestly getting nothing and don't know where to look. If you're really invested in getting that mentioned by anyone, you can shoot Wendi a message while the research is still young,
Are you telling me one of the most popular Central American cryptids isn't showing up? It's one of the few cryptids focused around the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. I'd consider it an offshoot of Mermaid sightings, but differentiated by having a red crocodilian appearance that frequently flee into deeper waters upon being spotted. It's said they hang out in coastal caves and will impart wisdom upon those brave enough to enter the caves at low tide, but are known for being vicious liars, commonly refuting their own existence.

You're really telling me you've never heard of Blood Divers?

It sounds familiar, but I'm honestly not coming up with anything. The name implied they're like parasites who live in blood or something like that, which I thought sounded neat.

There are a few stories about blood planets or blood dimensions that have spooky stuff going on in them, but I don't think that's the case here.

So they're just crocodile mermaids that go around gaslighting people?

Cause if so they might be my favorite thing ever.

Searching "blood diver cryptid" mostly brings up chupacabra stuff or general deep sea cryptid stuff that contains the words separated from each other. Searching "'blood diver' cryptid" produces a single page result that clearly has nothing to do with what you're talking about.

Clearly the Blood Divers have managed to gaslight Google into convincing the populace they don't exist or I've been Mendella'd into a world where knowledge of them is not nearly widespread as I would have presumed.

I actually really like this dude from what I've seen. His frankenstein video was phenomenal, and I say that as someone who has read the book and seen many adaptations of it.

I watched his cryptid tier vid yesterday, it was pretty good but one pet peeve I had with it is
Wendigoon rating some cryptids lower due to lacking ""lore"".

Not everything needs to have some deep ""lore"", people can just like the idea of some spooky or silly cryptid living near their area because it's silly/cool, or in cases such as the Jackalope one to gaslight tourists.

Also kind of a bummer he didn't really talk about the Skunk Ape hoax too much, because the story behind it is its own rabbit hole.
There's a vid by Beige Frequency about this for anyone interested.

Non-funny suggestion: is "Blood Divers" a literal translation of their Spanish name? Maybe their "accepted" English name is something else.

Where did you learn about them? I haven’t heard about them before and I would like to know more.

To a horny sailor? Maybe? The source of the mermaid myths were manatees which don't seem particularly attractive. I mean none of what was described to me led me to believe they were seducers / sirens in a traditional sense. Just that they were said to be wise, but inherently deceitful and didn't like people knowing they exist.

I honey mooned in Costa Rica. I was playing up the "I can't believe no one has heard about this!", but I'm still surprised to find NO ONE else has heard of them and they have basically zero web presence. I'm starting to wonder if the locals were taking advantage of a naïve tourist, but I didn't get that sense while I was there.

Blood Divers look like a red crocodile with some human characteristics, particularly the face. Their arms are longer than a traditional crocodiles with more adept claws. The tail is longer than their legs and they swim like you'd imagine a crocodile would.

They're secretive, going out of their way to camouflage the costal caves they live in. They're careful to avoid human settlements as much as possible and will give boats a wide berth. If you manage to track one down and meet it in its cave it'll engage in limited conversation and are apparently quite intelligent, but all the stories describe them as deceitful and malicious. They won't try to harm you physically, but will play mind games claiming you're dreaming or insane. They'll desert their home cave shortly after you leave.

Kind of sounds like the Reptile version of a Selkie, but I've never heard of it either.
