Wendigoon Thread

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
This is my biggest problem with Greylock, the sheer lack of a central focus. UrbanSpook' webseries may not be perfect, but at least Painter centers itself around the Pair of Killers and the mayhem they cause. Greylock on the other hand, can't decide if it wants to a Government Conspiracy, Demon Invasion (aka Mandela Catalogue), Virus Pandemic etc. The whole webseries comes off as a incoherent mess
No, no, no! You don't get it! It's DEEP. Like FNAF!

I agree with this but only because that Presidential directive for everyone to kill themselves before an unnamed enemy can get them is cool as hell and doesn't commit the sin of overexplaining things and hinting at aliens or spoopy ghosts.

I will never understand that Monument Mythos stuff. There are monsters inside the monuments that have something to do with Richard Nixon and James Dean and alternate timelines? Why would that appeal to anyone let alone the kids obsessed with it?

I like the initial idea of it, that the monuments contain some weird eldritch horrors and that there's a big government conspiracy to stop the general public from finding out but when it starts expanding it gets more absurd and loses me.

am i the only one that gives less than a tenth of a fuck about le vhs creepypastas and just wants more videos about murder coverups involving "suicide by dog eating your entire head"? where have THOSE gone?!

I like horror content but more so stuff where he analyzes a particular written piece like Junji's interpretation of the Frankenstein story. I used to enjoy creepypasta stuff but that was back when I was a teen, so I grew out of it as I got older albeit I still really enjoy horror.

This should be good; I'm also still hoping he'll eventually do that video analyzing different Christian groups that he mentioned wanting to work on during his Lost Books of the Bible video

Didn't do much research for this one, did he?

Like, the Thylacine (fuck's sake Wendi, look up the pronunciation), "oh it's just an animal that's dead now", no dude, it's a cryptid because there's people who claim there's still thylacines in the wild, with supposed sightings and encounters, and even theories that the Chupacabras are thylacines that were taken to zoos in Mexico and South America and somehow escaped.

Must be because he's in 25 different podcasts by now, no time to do the legwork.

For anyone who hasn't started it yet. Just skip to 9:50 for the beginning of the video. It starts with nearly ten minutes of disclaimers, introductions to what an iceberg is and what cryptids are, shoutouts to his new podcasts with boring ecelebs, and of course the video sponsorship.

In fairness the research was never his strong suit. Most of the "research" for the other icebergs amounted to being handfed explanations by the creator, reading reddit posts, and people in his community laying it out for him.

Late on this, but I just watched his video on the Monument Mythos. Good lord is that shit cringe, how the hell did it ever get so popular? The obvious answer is zoomies, but holy shit do they have a bad taste in horror. Hard to call it scary even, this is like a shitty SCP split-off universe that essentially serves as fan fiction environment for the author(s), you know the one. I was hoping to at least get to see what funny shit DRUMPF would get up to since half the appeal seems to be name dropping historical figures and presidents into the shitty fanfiction but I didn't even get that much. That bit with Musk was funny at least because I could definitely see him doing that.
There is another video that is 3+ hours long and summarized in less than half an hour, I can only imagine wasting that much more time on it.
Overall, zoomies suck and I bet that Mister Manticore guy is a lolcow, at least I seen mentioned as such in the sharty thread(the parody posted there is much better than anything he actually made btw)

I wonder what kind of crowd he thought he would attract, then. Shame, those are genuinely his best videos, that and his religious ones. Stuff like Yuba 5, Unit 731, going over Dante's poems/Paradise Lost or delving into Waco is what I watch his content for, the fake nu-horror stuff I avoid for the same reason I don't go on modern SCP or /x/ anymore.
Monument Mythos was where I experienced my very first big disconnect with Wendi's taste. Followed by Mandela Catalogue's later parts.

Nothing in Monument Mythos is scary. There are neat ideas, sure. But the whole thing comes across as being extremely stupid and just throwing a lot of insane shit at the wall and seeing what sticks. And fucking nothing does because it's not actually scary. It only got worse as the series went on and it took a weird political angle.

You hit the nail right in the head and this is what I meant with Greylock feeling like an /x/phile’s wet dream minus fleshgaits and ayylmaos. It’s way too much stuff.
So we got:
  • Fictitious government organ or private company in bed with the government that specializes in paranormal phenomena.
  • Shady experiments involving children or mentally disabled people that goes horribly wrong.
  • Tulpas and thoughtforms.
  • All events are centred in small town of picturesque but largely forgotten part of the USA.
  • TV hijackings with a Max Headroom incident reference.
  • Home invasion by what’s probably a cult.
  • Unexplained killings of babies and medical phenomena.
  • Company that sends blue collar employees to their own grave.
  • Evidence of cult older than anything else that somehow connects every civilization on Earth happens to be buried in overlooked place.
  • Extensive log by academic expert that explains everything. The academic is killed right after.
  • Unexplainable virus that mutated people into randomized deranged monsters.
  • Doors and other abstracts that are literal gates to metaphysical doom.
Yeah, this is lowkey a bingo but surprisingly only the tulpa stuff still exists on its own.
They really should have just stuck with the Tulpa shit. The tulpas taking over bodies was it's best hook and they squandered it. I truly do not know what Wendi finds so good about it, there's nothing to attach on to.

There's a book I read called The Last Days of Jack Sparks that had a similar set up but the pay off was way fucking better.

So like...he said it was an iceberg, but then he just started ranking the cryptids?

And it was like "Yeti is just snow bigfoot. Skunk Ape is just stinky Big Foot. Champie is just Loch Ness in America." etc. etc.

I get he promised he would do this forever ago, but were people actually bothering him about it? Because this feels like the most forced "I don't really give a shit about this video" video.

ANd was it just me, or did he spend way too much time just shitting on and debooking most of the cryptids? So in the span of six months we got a guy who used to make Uncle Ted memes basically shit all over Uncle Ted, and a guy that supposedly loved Cryptids just kind of shitting on Cryptids? What's next? "The Bible isn't real but damn are they some good stories"?

I unsubbed from him, but I might as well just start hitting the "do not recommend" button now. Fucking dreadful.

He's slowly turning into every other youtuber, 50 different podcast.
If you're not in 75 different podcasts, how will you and everybody else know you're successful?

The big selling point, seemed to me, of Wendi was he was pretty authentic. Over time he started feeling more like he was playing the game, catering to the algorithm, and the "just hanging out with so and so" turned into "networking" turned into "collab podcasts", and now this felt like he's phoning it in.

Maybe it's just his one his heart isn't in it, but I guess some people do get defeated by success.

The video was fine. I was afraid it would be 10 minutes of ads and self shilling but the actual ads were the usual 2-3 minutes and he just took forever to not get sidetracked, which he is entertaining to not be an issue.

Most bad I can say about it that he went over the subjects too fast, but it's understandable since the first levels in those icebergs are usually the ones most people know through cultural osmosis. The real meat is in the next levels.

It's a ranking video, not a iceberg exploration video. It's official, Wendigoon has fallen

I got really annoyed listening to the new cryptid video. Ten minutes of him shilling for a gay podcast nonwithstanding, the iceburg itself felt incredibly under-researched. I could understand if it was something in the lower tier got a shitty exlaination, but if he had even skimmed Wikipedia he'd have known why Tazmanian Tigers were on the list. Infuriating.

He mentioned in the beginning he was working with a guy from Lauren Coleman's museum to put this together, that has to be bullshit. All the entries felt like they were written by ChatGPT.

I just checked at your suggestion and blood divers aren't even on the iceberg! What a croc.
So I'm trying to search up the blood divers cryptid, but I'm honestly getting nothing and don't know where to look. If you're really invested in getting that mentioned by anyone, you can shoot Wendi a message while the research is still young,
