Wendigoon Thread

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Iirc, his wife is also his editor. I think. I guess.
I'm pretty sure he did/does have a proper editor as in some of his videos he's credited someone else with being his editor (can't remember which ones off the top of my head soz). I'm not sure if that's still the case but I can't see why it wouldn't be given the production value of his stuff has gone way up since he started his channel.

Could be, in any case he picked a bad spot to record audio and I don't think whoever his editor may or may not be really cared to even do a cursory cleanup of the already half aborted quality.

That or it was shite enough that this is what it sounds like *after* attempting to salvage it, I would venture he needs to splurge some cash on a nice lavalier microphone if he wants to record in an echoey room and have the audio not suck 500 kinds of ass.

I watched like 40 minutes of the new video and can't really see the criticism. Youtube spooky videos is an autism hole I gave up on, and Wendigoon seems to have enough interest in the subject matter to be entertaining (unlike low energy reviewers like the AVGN). It's hard to make a do and don't without being negative, and I can understand why one who likes this genre won't like it being used as gorn.

The thing I don't like is him going on too many podcasts, it is a direct route to kill your youtube video for e-begging.

Edit: watched more of the video, ironically I like The Painter more than the other series because of how obnoxious the "deep lore" is in the latter. It's like The Painter is the raw appeal of this genre (horrific imagery and situations) without all the bullshit that is thrown in to make it seems more sophisticated and complicated than it actually is. Especially as those series always eventually implode under that lore, so by now who gives a shit.

Greylock looks over produced, and the filters they put over the audio do a piss poor job hiding how high quality it is.

The faces in the Painter legitimately made me jump and that's really all you need if your goal is just to scare people.

Is it really that expensive to just buy a shitty old microphone? I understand that setting up a actual VCR tape deck or some shit for full authenticity is a lot of work, but c'mon.

Funnily enough, there is a YouTube creator that does analog 90s style videos with real VHS cassettes and VCRs. Guy really nails the vibe and feel of analog. Link to how he does it:

I will never understand that Monument Mythos stuff.
The first seasons were very promising from a worldbuilding perspective and the whole appeal was that each video was supposed to be made or compiled by that universe’s conspiracy nuts but they were fucking right. The alt-history crowd really warmed up to it from the get-go and among the heavy hitters it felt like the most imaginative.

MONUMENTMYTHOSSPOILERS
Going to use this as an excuse to showcase my autistic level of knowledge about it because I was penning a script about it two days before Wendi's video dropped.
There are monsters inside the monuments that have something to do with Richard Nixon and James Dean and alternate timelines?
Not quite. In the MM universe national monuments are used by the government to conceal or commit atrocities against the populous. One of the main menaces is a species of extra dimensional flora called special tree that acts as a conduit and component of a ‘multi-versal corner’ from where the special trees can swap people to an alternate universe as long as there’s a parallel version of them near another special tree. This was weaponized by the US government to get rid of dissenters although they act of their own accord. Some monuments, including the Washington Monument, were built to hide special trees.
The only proper monster hiding within a monument is the Horned Serpent, a super deformed George Washington that is hidden under the Statue of Liberty (alternatively called Liberty Lurker) and feeds on unsuspecting migrants. His rise hails the end of the world but Alex seems like he forgot about that in favour of elevating more charismatic monsters like the Statue of Freedom (who is possessed by the souls of Thomas Crawford and his fictitious daughter Nina) and the Angel (a platoon of soldiers that were sent out to die in Egypt during WWI and have fused as a Dr. Manhattan-esque being trying to end the universe).

James Dean in the MM outlived our universe's counterpart and managed to become the 37th president. Dean is referred as the Devil almost from his very inception by the ADA (a right wing fringe group of people that presumably are responsible for the videos and as such are simultaneously very powerful but also very inept) but he gains the public over by consistently performing acts that make him look good (like curing deafness). Something, something Anti-Christ. Even though he acts in a way that would led you to believe he is barely even a character and the videos seem to suggest people caught up to his fuckery way too late, the last seasons suggests he was exposed at the end of his administration. Due to the fact that he and everything he does was the first major difference with our universe people referred to the Monument Mythos continuity as the Deanverse and thus our timeline was dubbed the Nixonverse.
Richard Nixon is barely more than a joke in the MM, as in his only contribution is being the president of the James Dean fanclub and being part of his personal entourage. Alex made an alternate series dubbed the Nixonverse that takes a contrary approach by making Nixon God, Jesus and Superman and suggesting he is one of the survivors of the Deanverse and also took his power from Dean after witnessing his death.

Why would that appeal to anyone let alone the kids obsessed with it?
There's a metric shit ton of worldbuilding and alt-hist at play and you know zoomers love their lore. Also, MM has a lot of very dry humour in it like when James Dean says in press conference he is moving the Statue of Freedom to the Grand Canyon so "people can't shot at it" right after that universe's version of the Capitol riots or when Hillary Clinton sends nukes to try to kill a giant crab that carries the Ever Given and when it reaches Cairo the ADA call it a free-for-all.

whatever the fuck Corner Folk is
That weird first attempt at a lore mystery series he awkwardly tried to re-incorporate at the end. It served better when it was a very lowkey reference as to the fact Virginia and her friends have their organs backwards compared to the MM people. At least it served as a lesson for The House in The Ocean and making his old shorts public.

It should have ended after season 2
My hot take here is that he didn't need to keep adding shit because he already had too many plot threads going. The Delaware Double never got a mention past his video, we never learned what the 2003 infection meant or why that divided the USA into zones, why Maya Arnoldson was public enemy number one for like 12 years while her brother larps as a horror YouTuber, what happened to Maize or why Walt Disney has stock in fucking hospitals, how life works if electricity became a path for infection, how James Dean was exposed. He rushed into exploring Egypt and then dropped more shit he forgot about there like the first guy to become a Crown or what makes Crowns an asset that's worth a war over. Hell, is kind of hard to keep up with how many Virginias there were.

but come season 3 and it's suddenly Elon Musk on the moon or whatever.
Aksually it was Mars but yeah, a lot of people got into MM as political shitposting and that's how Alex started to make Donald Trump: American President tier shit. If I'm being honest I think Alex didn't got the attention he wanted with MM and what it became is a reflection of that. The Wendigoon video is like a before and after because Alex made a fuss about how Wendi thought there were two timelines from the start and he tried to end it right there by jumping to other projects. The last season builds Monty Clift as president, intervention from higher beings that breaks what analog means, acknowledgement Dean is the devil, the government asking people to leave America and then it ends because Virginia's son Everett asks Freedom and Angel to be friends.

There's shit like how Virginia Arnoldson sounds like a very "ask me what it means" name or how much he tried to incorporate First Nations folklore to then invent a made up cosmovision of his world. I was surprised there was never a mention of the Matthew Thornton guy that sends random letters or the So Joana Book cypher tbh. And after all these years Alex still doesn't know how to draw or can hire someone to make graffiti that wasn't made on MS Paint.

I'll be honest, I don't get the appeal of this "analog horror" stuff. Like I get it can be creepy with spooky faces, but otherwise it's just like "WHOOOOA VHS SCARY!!!" it seems to me. Just something for zoomers primarily I guess.
Analog horror is one of those things I feel as if I should like because it lines up with my broader tastes, but when trying to watch it I'm bored to tears.

I can't see how this will be appealing at all.
People liked the Ted the Caver thing I guess. I could see it working as an occasional thing talking about older creepypastas or urban legends, but I think getting bogged down talking about gay SCPs and zoomer “horror” lore is going to get stale pretty fast. Also I don’t know if their personalities are going to mesh for more regular collaborations, meat is much more vulgar and edgy, and while I’m not saying wendi is a thin-skinned bitch or anything, I think eventually they might rub each other the wrong way.

The dogpiling on UrbanSpook is weird to me and I don't think his content is very interesting or that he's a particularly good storyteller. I'd believe that he's just doing it to sell merch and his sperging at criticism isn't unusual for artists. There's tons of artists who can get thousands of positive comments but the one critic causes them to have public meltdowns. My interpretation is this is just what the guy likes to make and is annoyed by everyone trying to tell him how to do it 'right', or maybe wanting him to do something he's just not interested in, and that's not including the attempts to cancel him for his edgy content. There are much worse things that have happened in real life and those probably inspire his work.
It's like appreciating genuinely good films and also being able to chill with something like Scary Movie. Both shock value goreporn and something more elegantly crafted like Local 58 can exist together, they can't really be compared imo. If this is as far as Urban wants to go, maybe just let him be since he does seem to have a decent following.
It honestly seems a little cruel for Wendigoon to say he can't recommend UrbanSpook while sounding annoyed the whole time and then giving high praises to Greylock, so it was nice of Grey to leave a comment praising Urban.

Wendi uploaded an intro to the podcast channel. The corpse clause gives me a little hope. I still think the tone is going to be different than what he’s expecting but he says he’s open to whatever it turns into. We’ll see.

Wendi is taking to marriage well, think he's starting to put on some weight because of his wife's cooking. Though it might just be him prepping for winter.

Anyhoo should be a nice chill podcast. Still want more Weird Bible episodes, though.
The way Wendigoon emphasized the older Internet horror and folklore stuff made me a little more optimistic, I always enjoy his stuff based on older or more contained stories way more than his analysis of the zoomer deeplore “horror” du jour.
