Wendigoon Thread

Newest creepcast was meh. The story itself was pretty good but good God with each passing episode I dislike wendigoon more and more. The entire last third of the episode was filled with the guy soyjak-ing out over any minute bit of body horror. I get being enthusiastic and all but Jesus Christ save it for either the end of any given chapter or the post-story discussion.
Going "YES DUDE WE'RE SO BACK DUDE YES DUDE I LOVE THIS DUDE" every other paragraph doesn't add jackshit to the episode.

It's another shitty story. Not quiiiiite so-bad-it's-good, so super frustrating, but it does have a few laughs. As an episode it's interesting in that I think it's the first time Wendi just completely gives up on a story like Meat did in The Thing in the Basement, outside of UrbanSPOOK I guess which he already hated going into it. Meat just completely walks away from the microphone for a while to get a snack while Wendi is reading a bunch of dialog and comes back with no idea what Wendi was talking about

Unironically I think this story might be the author's escapist daydreams brought to prose. That's the only explanation I can think of for why this story is the way it is:
  • Thomas is a one-dimensional protagonist whose only defining traits are that he simps for Rachel and he's unirconially fucking retarted, and who reads more as a spectator for the story to happen around than an actual character. And isn't so convenient that he's the super special guy that Rachel was talking to and could contain the magic tree nut?
  • There's no conflict, and what might count for it is resolved immediately afterwards. Plot threads are introduced just as quickly as they're tossed away, and by the end the story's shifted so far it's no longer about some guy peeping on a girl for money.
  • Even the whole part with the basement and the house reads like something  I would come up with (only replace the deserted island with vast prairies). That's actually what tipped me off in the first place.

So, yeah, the story sucks because I don't think it's a real story. It had us hooked at the start with a cool mystery, but that was all a ruse. There's not even any horror, either, so why is it on nosleep?

Video was fun though, at least up until they realized what was going and just gave up. I'd even consider this an unofficial sequel to their The Thing in the Basement video.

E: Actually maybe I should have finished the video before making my write-up...

E2: Even the whole job thing seems like wish fulfillment now that I think about it, getting paid that much for so little work. Thomas could have just as easily gotten paid to do a long-term study and it wouldn't have changed the story at all.

Listening to this it feels like the author had an interesting idea for a story, particularly watching people in cages and the government angle, but then gave up partway through and wrote something much different so I found myself agreeing with Isaiah quite a bit.

Watching them go from "wow this author has a lot of work, we might have more content for the channel" to just screaming at the story to end and apologizing was great.

I think was definitely a case of the author had the title of the story first and tried to work backwards with it. I also agree with wendigoon that the latter part of the story felt like a completely different story just attached to it.

I'm loving the weekly Creepcast episodes, not gonna lie. The latest one had me in tears of laughter when the boys were riffing on it, it was so terrible it actually had no redeeming qualities whatsoever. The only "horror" was the protagonist; he read like a creepy incel you would have the misfortune of meeting in real life, and this "connection" he had with Rachel seemed to be all in his own head. I've seen this one recommended quite a lot - are the standards in the creepypasta community that low? I don't think any of the stories they've covered have been literary masterpieces or anything, but the ones I think stand out (Penpal, LRG, Feed the Pig) clearly had some genuine thought put into them, and actually tried to scare the reader. This one read like the sad fantasies of a really lonely loser.

To give the story some credit, discounting the writing the premise and general summary of the plot could very well work if the author had just leaned into the romantic / wish fulfillment aspects (that he clearly was already pivoting towards anyway). If it was a light novel, I wager it would have gotten a better reception. Might have even gotten popular,

Problem is, by posting it to nosleep, and writing the first part the way he did, he set up the wrong expectations for what the story was going to be about, so by the end the reader just ends up like Hunter and Isaiah did—genuinely pissed off at the rug pull.

The protagonist was definitely the 'best' part. Just gradually realizing that he wouldn't be able to say how he felt if he hadn't eaten breakfast this morning was fantastic

If it were a light novel he would have looked down at the sledgehammer and realized it was a +3 Hammer of Wallbashin' and he was still level 1 and couldn't use it but Rachael was level 5 and had been in that world long enough that she would be able to destroy the wall in one attack if she hit the weakpoint that only he could see

As terrible as that would have been it definitely would have been an improvement lol

New Creepcast. My Job is Watching a Woman Trapped in a Room.
That’s also incidentally the name of the episode.

The prophecy subplot completely underminds itself. If the organization is trying to purposely trigger a series of events with a guy named Thomas and has been doing it for YEARS with God knows how many Thomas then it becomes less prophecy and more law of averages.

It would be like Gandalf getting a prophecy that a hobbit will destroy the ring and sent like four dozen hobbits on suicide missions before he got to Frodo.

I listened to a narration of this story and the other stories in the series on the Dark Somnium youtube channel not too long ago, honestly I think his narrations sold it better due to the quality he puts into them, but my standards are also pretty low. I was also half asleep for most of them as well, so I'm sure that helped some. Hearing this version on CC has definitely pointed out some of the flaws that I somehow didn't pick up on, although I think this story is better with the context of the rest of the stories.

I share the same sentiment. I like Wendigoon, but he needs to stop being over dramatic, it comes off as really superficial. On the flip side, I've actually been liking Meat Canyon more as of late. He's a bit simple in his analysis of stories, but he's also funny while still being down to earth, and not derailing the episode for half an hour because he's afraid of his wife coming home from work.

I haven't watched red thread yet, but if Wendigoon is just as obnoxious in that as well, then I'll probably skip it.

Charlie was the worst part of Red Thread and he's gone now, I've enjoyed the more recent episodes with the new guy. They don't cover 'stories' so there's no "We're so back" or overacting on Wendi's part. He usually takes on the role of "true believer" so you can tell he doesn't always believe what he's saying, but he's vocal about playing that as a role so he says things like "Well somebody has to defend it and I guess it's me"

For the most part, at least on the old episodes, I only watched it if it was on a topic I'm interested in because the podcast itself isn't a draw for me. I'll probably keep watching consistently until I hit a dud with the new guy though, he's got a bit of dumb enthusiasm (not to say he's dumb, idk, but he seems to enjoy learning about things and he hasn't known anything about the topics so far) which is charming, whereas Charlie was mostly aggressively disinterested, he totally ruined the Voynich Manuscript episode which is a shame because that's a super fun topic just to spout bullshit on because even historians have no idea what the fuck is going on. I think he was trying to play the skeptic to Wendi's true believer but he didn't know anything about the topic so he just refused to engage rather than trying to deboonk

Jackson(?) also isn't too great IMO. Him and Charlie were the main factors in me not watching any of it.
Might give it another go now that they have oompaville.
Because while he doesn't believe in much of anything, as I've seen in other "supernatural" video's he's been a part of, he at least has the courtesy (or rather common sense, seeing how they are aiming to be entertaining) to entertain other ideas and such, even if it is with comedic elements.

Jackson is a bit boring, yeah, but I feel like Red Thread is his baby since he and his girlfriend do all the prep work and the podcast is basically just him explaining things and the other two reacting to it which is why Charlie in particular was so awful. He does also have his moments, I mentioned the story at the beginning of the Jack the Ripper episode a few pages back, that was fantastic in my opinion. If it was just him or him and charlie it would definitely be unwatchable.

It's like a junior high group project. You have to keep the guy who does the work, but it's more fun to watch the presentation when the rest of the group is class clowns, not the depressed slacker.

Awesome, watching it now. It's one of my favorites. Hopefully they'll be able to get into the twitter/ARG portion of it but it doesn't seem like it. Looks like they're only doing what's on the Marble Hornets channel, not even totheark. Hopefully they realize they need watch them when Jay starts responding to them in the videos

Edit: Oh good, they did start watching totheark a bit after the hour mark
