If it wasn't going to be stealing from anime, they were going to be stealing from past cartoons. They literally cannot come up with their own designs.

FFS the pilot's thumbnail is making me think of this CLANNAD picture, but in all fairness, this look of girls on their backs sleeping or whatever except for the main character is too damn common in anime merchandise.

Then contrast that with traditionally appealing characters.
but I'm going to make these intentionally ugly characters soooo relatable and quirky, that you'll look past this ugly creature, and love her more than the traditionally appealing characters.

Jeebus, these designs make 90s cartoons look perfect. That reminds me: In American comics one issue that became increasingly apparent is when writers used existing characters to represent their RL hang-ups. It was awkward back then and now it's worse, because now writers are doing the same for cartoons and movies that are more accessible than Spiderman comic n.1251st, and the writers have even less talent than before.
What do you think?

Holy shit, I've never cared to watch Owl House, but what few character designs I saw from it were way better than that main character. She literally looks like a fridge with buck teeth, if you told me it was a parody of modern designs I'd believe you.

That reminds me. The other day I looked over at animation Twitter and saw some people being like “Nuh uh, she’s justified! If she needs to move on, you need to move on from things you hate! Don’t you know it’s the same thing as Shrek!” and so on and so forth.
