Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

To get circular about this, the only two people claiming it to be shelved are kind of untrustworthy. I mean Camp is not involved in the reboot whatsoever, yet he somehow knows it’s been shelved? And again, neither will list a source? Sounds pretty suspicious.

I’m just saying I want a bit more substantiative evidence than two people not involved with the reboot, one with a clear vendetta. Though deep down I hope this leads to a collapse in Western animation.

Bob apparently did say who his source was, like I said: someone who was working on the reboot. Plus he said this weeks ago.

Bob knows people who know people - I know that much. And I know he's not the kind of guy who would deliberately lie about something. When I heard he said it I knew it had to come from somewhere.

Well just as we were talking about this, a smoking gun appeared; Comedy Central had a press release openly listing the Ren and Stimpy reboot as part of their upcoming slate. The press release was from this past Wednesday:

Now there’s a chance that there was a mix up and it wasn’t taken off the slate in time but that’s a stretch; I think it’s safe to say that the reboot is still on track. And not to pile on, but sometimes, you need more than just “this guy knows people”. Always check their sources.

They write these things in advance, though. This is equally flimsy evidence - even flimsier.

If a guy who was working on the reboot isn't a good enough source for you, I don't know what to tell ya.

>Comedy Central has a press briefing that reveals Ren and Stimpy on their slate. Some people on twitter begin dropping hints they’re working on it and it’s coming.
>Uh...these are made in advance, that’s it! Therefore a statement made by officials is flimsier than Internet hearsay!

This is getting ridiculous; I don’t even discount the theory that this might be slip up and will get edited later but let’s look at the facts; an official word from Comedy Central (which what I was asking for) is much more solid than a word from some guy who doesn’t even work on the reboot.

Nobody has given a name on who this director supposedly was talking with Camp. It’s hard to blame others for not believing when your source is “dude trust me”.

Why exactly should he have given the name, pray tell? Why expose him to the world? Why not keep him anonymous?

Consider this - the story has been out for three or four weeks now. In all that time, nobody has come out and said "I'm involved in the production and this isn't true." No confirmation work is still going. And this is in a business where people are always talking about what they're doing next on Twitter.

People want direct confirmation, claiming that it's canceled or not is not something anyone wants when all that's there is he said/she said and a bunch of twitter idiots complaining about the show's existence. Besides, the fact that there's been no director listed, not even since the show was first announced is definitely a worrying sign.

They announced the reboot and never followed it up with more info on the show... that doesn't seem suspicious to you, either? No talk about the progress since that first announcement.

No it's totally suspicious, that's what I'm gettting at here, the lack of literally any information is why people are pissed off to begin with. I've been wanting to know who was directing this for weeks, and even /co/'s upset that more information hasn't been revealed.

Interesting you bring up /co/ since I was able to find something there. Some anons found a twitter of a story board artist who may be hinting that he maybe involved with the reboot. Some have noticed that he posts a lot of R&S stuff, some drawings, some defending the show itself. Then there’s this cryptic tweet:

Do keep in mind it’s only been a month between the show’s announcement and the press release so it’s not like a HGS situation. Plus many people working on the show would be under NDA, meaning they couldn’t be able to say out loud they’re working on it, doubly so with the controversy stirring around.

NDA doesn't mean you can't say you're working on it. NDAs are for revealing what's going on behind the show. People in animation are always talking about the shows they're going to work on - which is why it's odd nobody's talking about it.

(Note he does not deny that the show was shelved. He denies it was canned. Of course they could bring it back... but I find it unlikely.)

Once again, I may remind you about the huge backlash that came from announcing the reboot and how professional animators are out for blood. With so much vitriol behind this project, is it really that weird that people would quiet about working on it? (Also maybe some NDAs are different ? The animators I followed couldn’t announce what they were working on until they got the word.)

Look if this gets officially cancelled with no room for doubt I’ll bow out gracefully. But based on what I’m seeing so far, I’m going with “strong maybe it’s still on”.

Personally, I’m more interested in the potential office politics involved with this whole shitshow.

They don't officially cancel things that don't make it to broadcast. The animation landscape is littered with shows that were abandoned and never made it to air, and nobody ever knew. (There was a Blues Brothers cartoon set to be done at Bento Box a few years ago. Nothing's been heard of it since - but perhaps they might still be working on it, all these years later?)

NDAs mean what they say. It may be standard industry practice not to have such NDAs, but they can certainly exist. They can forbid you from discussing anything at all, even the existence of the NDA itself.

Once again, it’s only been a couple of months since the announcement in August and the press release on September 30. If this was a year or two of radio silence, you’d have a point but goddamn, it’s only a couple of months; the press release hasn’t been edited either since these past days either. I’d also like to point out that Beavis & Butt-head and Clone High were announced at similar times and haven’t had as much info released either, yet no one is suspicious of them.

And about that little attempt at a “gotcha” with the failed Blues Bros cartoon; I nor is anyone else denying things fall through in development hell. But even then some cartoons can spend years in development with little to no word before popping up (OK KO and Twelve Forever immediately come to mind). Course, as stated above, it’s only been a few months so why bring up that example?

I’m only on “strong maybe” based on what a I’ve seen; I’m not inflexible and I’ll gladly eat crow if I’m positively proven wrong (I lost my gamble with the Snyder Cut, I’m willing to gamble again.) Personally I still don’t have strong feelings for the reboot but I’m keeping an eye on it for the vitriol it brings out in everyone and the juicy tidbits surrounding it, like the guild wars.

Because no one's said they've been shelved? Unless someone comes out and says so, nobody has any reason to suspect things aren't going on as normal.

The fact is no one would be saying it had been shelved if word hadn't come out from Bob Camp - and if he hadn't confirmed where he got it. I was suspicious at first, too, but considering that it obviously didn't come from nowhere, I thought there had to be some truth to it. Once he confirmed his source, I pretty much knew that was it. For now it's shelved, but God knows things can change.

I hope they shitcanned it entirely, at least how it looked like it was going to be. I'm worried they just backed off waiting for the backlash to die down before sneaking it back like a restaurant just reheating the sandwich you sent back and trying it again after spitting in it.

Usually networks don't listen ever, so I wonder just what was going on behind the scenes...

Maybe they're waiting until John winds up in jail like he deserves. Then he won't be able to profit, period.

And before you go “oh he has connections” and “oh he confirmed his sources”, a name was never brought up beyond he talked with someone. This doesn’t even include factors like Bob being fed bad information.

Why do I get the feeling this whole argument is rooted in your hate boner for John K?

Let’s just agree to disagree on this whole mess. Because once again, I find the guild politics more interesting than the actual reboots.

It seems that’s exactly what they’re doing; the Kamp Koral fiasco either taught them nothing or taught them too much.

There’s personally a lot of projects I’d like to see shitcanned, reboots or otherwise.
