Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

AT’s world never felt sane enough to add lore to
I totally agree. I adore season 1 because it's so random and zany, and I still quote it constantly. The show would be a good one to revisit and do a retrospective on because it changed so much over the course of its run, and it did it somewhat successfully since people ended up liking the finale and miniseries that came out of it. Considering how long it lasted, even the failures are interesting...... I just couldn't stand them at the time and couldn't get distance on them. I'm almost glad to hear other people responded the way I did, at the time I was only reading AV Club reviews and they creamed themselves over every pointless episode.

PB was always morally compromised, it just went from being kind of funny to really serious, and maybe that happened too fast, whereas Ice King gave you so many good "oh shit" moments in the buildup to learning more about him and taking him from a comic to a tragic character.

Alas, the tastes of more than a few Western animation fans have regressed, now I see people doing the "you know, there are adult jokes in it, it's not really just for kids" routine with shows aimed at preschoolers.

Bluey, right? I've legit seen people who say it's one of their favorite cartoons.
:stress:
We need to make openly bullying nerds like them socially acceptable again.

Yes, Bluey is one of the shows I've seen Animation Twitter people and other creatures going gaga over. Like here, someone posts a video of a very simple scene and the behind-the-scenes process and they were losing their minds: OH WOW A FOURTH WALL BREAK, AMAZING

This is definitely a generational thing. I don't know of any friends or misc people in my age bracket who even know about this show. If you asked me about Bluey a while back, I'd thought you were referring to Blues Clues.

Bluey is a good cartoon but it's a good cartoon for little kids. It's a slice of life cartoon and very relaxed one at that. Coflicts are on the mundane side, characters generally get along well, humor is grounded rather than zany and the episodes are stand alone. There are lessons but not in every episode and some of those are unusual like loosing sucks but learning to deal with loosing a skill that makes life better and allows better games with better wins. The parents are portrayed very positively and spending time with family is emphasized. There is clearly gone alot work to make episodes are fun for kids while being pleasant and relatable for parents.

So it's a cartoon to watch if you want relax with your toddler for episode or two. Do I recommend watching it if you don't have a little kid? Mostly not, it's not ground braking and it's so clearly for little kids but if you happen be a mood for a comfort cartoon it's not a bad choice. Bluey isn't brainless but doesn't reguire much from you so if you just want something positive with pretty pastel colors you might enjoy yourself. Also there are multiple episodes that try something different like Faceytalk that takes place in a video chat. So you have multiple screens going on at same time that get used very creatively for jokes and storytelling about a kid having a temper tantrum after refusing to give turn to her sister.

So they did a joke that Chowder, Gumball, and TTG have already done 10 years ago, and better. Wow, the state of animation is truly something.

Honestly a sweet and innocent show that wants to just be a show kids can enjoy, without giving their parents headaches is almost a miracle in this day and age.

Give it credit for that, bluey isn't trying to push an agenda or hasn't added in a character raised by two gay parents for the sake of "diversity" despite the complaints by the idiots in the social mobs.

For now.

Thanks for bringing that back up. Putting it in my animation backlog now that you've reminded me. Heard it was dope. But yeah, it's mighty funny how the "ANIMATION IS A VALID MEDIUM" faggots never talk about shit like Watership Down, or Plague Dogs, or Anomalisa, or Waking Life, or A Scanner Darkly.

Let's be real, most of the people talking like that weren't born when these things came out.

So this little number got an animated film recently. And you all get the novel cover because I prefer it.

Like almost every attempt to adapt Pratchett's stuff I am not really a fan. But I recognise what they are going for it. My biggest issue is it's not as murder heavy as the books but, sociopathic little child I was, I said that about Farthing Wood and Watership Down too.

I think as an attempt to make a PG film that targets modern children it's...average. I could slate every single change it's made and why it's awful, scream at every altered line of dialogue and rant for days. But I watched it with someone who's not a major Discworld fan and every line Pratchett wrote that was a funny one got a laugh and maybe 20% of the added material did. It's not perfect but maybe it'll get some more people enjoying the source material.
Little late on this, but what do you think of the 1990s Wyrd Sisters adaptation?

I've a soft spot for it and Soul Music's adaptation. To nail a version of any of the Discworld books you do have to change stuff somewhat because the narrator's voice is such a massive part of it but despite that challenge they are watchable. I thought the voices for the witches were fine choices, Christopher Lee as Death worked too.

It's good. Not great but you can see the work that went into it. I suspect many would complain about the ugliness of it but I think that works given how the characters are normally depicted.

Probably late, but there was a Netflix show called Final Space my brother recommended me about a year ago, watched a couple of episodes but wasn't impressed. Apparently it was so unimpressive it got Shoah'd from streaming services.

Yeah, Final Space was one of those where everyone in the cartoon community and even people on tv were bragging about how amazing the show was, only for it slowly died because the rest of the world didn't give a shit about it.

Hell, I stopped watching it because of how awful the comedy was in the show. The main lead Gray (voiced by the creator of the show) especially pisses me off with how he would always scream to the top of his voice while never shutting the fuck up, even with the explanation that he was stuck alone in a space for years didn't make endure me to his character. I hated every second of Gary's antics.
It didn't help that he had this long-running joke about wanting cookies that got so old quickly.

What does makes the death of Final Space a bit funny is how desperate people online tried to make others watch the show because even they knew barely anyone cared to watch it.
