So hey, it’s not just the PPG Christmas special coming back.

Foster's had a knack for presenting a "dark" world without ever leaning too hard into drama or despair. They were able to do that because the premise of the show is lowkey a creepypasta, like, what if all your friends aren't real, and what if they regularly get abandoned? It's such a dark undertone that you just have to gently remind people of it every now and then to achieve real pathos and emotion, while the rest of the show can be whimsical and hilarious. Goo is a great example, as well as Wilt's backstory, and Mac's entire home life.

I think is represented very well by the theme alone. It starts in an almost eerily fashion if you only take into account the very first seconds. IT had me tearing up the first time I heard it after years of not actively thinking about the show. It gives me the same feelings as Les Contes de la Rue Broca in a way.

EDIT: Decided to play it for shits and giggles. Still get goosebumps like the first time.

I agree about the plot and I something that I really appreciated growing up because somehow the show where you can see imaginary friends felt very grounded, maybe not in the plot of every episode but rather in the tone and conflicts it would allow itself to dwell into every once in a while. I think we for animated shows to go back to this more nuanced approach to human drama rather than being so explicit and using fantastical elements as a crotch to talk exclusively about diversity.

I said as much earlier, but it's still great to see the classics again even if only for Christmas.

BTW, if any of you have MeTV, their morning classic cartoon show will have a special Christmas edition on Monday in primetime. I hear it's the premiere of a new restoration of the Fleischers' "Somewhere in Dreamland."

And, oh yes, the biggest surprise of all is that they just started showing Columbia cartoons. Maybe this'll be the return of UPA shorts to TV?

I have a soft spot in this in my heart. I watch this every year around Christmas. Plus it is interesting to see artists do something different than they normally do for their work.

I did see the plot is about the three guys waking up in the modern world after smoking a magical blunt of sorts and spending the last 50 years in stasis. I hope this doesn't mean it will necessarily conform to "modern sensibilities".

I have not but I'm fairly certain there were ideas for doing it going around back in the 90s. It took this long to get made...
