Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

Animation IS for and ONLY for kids, our streaming executives and Hollywood has decided this
God dammit don't remind me of the saccharine cartoon hellscape we live in. It's either that or nauseatingly edgy schlock like invincible.

The rest of Primal Season 2 can't come soon enough.

I don't personally consider Invincible "edgy". I know that you've got scenes like the train massacre etc. but I don't know, it doesn't feel the same to me but I can't really give a good description for why. To me something like The Boys is edgy, Invincible just comes off as "serious". If that makes sense.

plus going back to its roots as a comic (which is apparently is MORE graphic than the show) the is some point to the "edgy" imagery. You've got classic cartoon/comic book graphics that are bright and colorful, juxtaposed with horrible gore as people get squeezed and popped like grapes or arms ripped out with ease. Its basically the old question of "what if superman was in the real world and had no control over his strength?" which...idk it feels like it's getting old at this point Hell it was already old back in the 2000s when the comics were first published, but sometimes all an old trope needs is a new spin on it to seem fresh again.

You ever fear that LS Mark might get unexpected brain damage from willingly choosing to wrap his brain around the fact that modern day Western Animation is soulless?
I mean anyone would if they kept banging their head against a brick wall so many times

I get he's passionate about animation, but dude should pick and choose his battles... it's not good for his health.

So apparently in the recent Owl House episode, this happened...

And you know who else has a Dead Father as well... Dana Terrace.

But of course. Amity is legit confirmed to be Dana's self insert:
Terrace identifies as bisexual. She wanted to write about a bisexual character, so she really pushed Disney to allow the character.

But of course. Amity is legit confirmed to be Dana's self insert:
Luz has a dead dad, not Amity. She's a sexy bully-turned-good rich girl who gets everything she wants because she's gayyyy. Fun fact, she's Dana's least favorite character and she only got a bigger role because the other writers (*cough* Molly Ostertag) wanted to shoehorn the rainbow agenda and Dana doesn't mind having all these representation points.
Eda is her self-insert.

Dana loves DRAMA, that's why. Two episodes ago it was revealed Eda crippled her dad in her cursed owl form as a child and it traumatized her deeply. Pretty deep stuff considering she was cursed by her own sister, yet they barely had any closure on this. Like, ffs she couldn't even rip off Gravity Falls correctly, how many episodes it took for Stan and Ford reconcile???
It's like every female character is a self-insert power fantasy: they never face any consequences for anything, everybody likes them, except for the bad guys, they're always right and barely struggle learning anything and can never be unhappy for more than one and a half episode. At least the male characters have actual flaws, unsurprisingly.

I did not know that Little Lulu was that old of a cartoon, even though I can’t complain. Back in my day, I remembered watching the HBO version on cable.

Pretty amusing.

They made other versions

I know this is a Western cartoon thread but just to let you know a Japanese one exists

Classic Japanese not the cutesy moe version

I actually used to own a DVD of of the Little Lulu and Little Audrey cartoons, and this short was on it. i thoroughly enjoyed watching them.

Plus Little Lulu is an overall adorable character in general.

Just finished watching Green Eggs & Ham: The Second Serving. It's not as good as the first season but it's still a very good time to be had. Unfortunately any problems you had with the first season/movie are still prevalent in this one, though in a much smaller degree due to the spy thriller focus of this season.

You know, you bring up a good point.

Why does every modern creator make every female character, a self-insert power fantasy?

I’ve especially seen soyboys & femcels do it.

It's a lot of things, all of which are just pathetic. But it's always lulzy when they make the male characters likeable on accident and ree when their fans like them more than Mary Sue #7848532.

Speaking of femcels: Netflix dug out Noelle Stevenson's Nimona from the Blue Sky graveyard.

On one hand fuck Disney and their tendency to sit on projects like dragons on treasure. On the other hand fuck Stevenson she's a trainwreck who needs actual therapy not cartoon or gender therapy. The only thing good about this news is the hope that the Mouse Guard movie could be dug out next.

The worst part about it is, the art style actually looks dope as shit. It's a crying shame that it has to be attached to a story by Noelle "No-Tits" Stevenson.
Edit:
Former Blue Sky staffers spoke out, saying that they had received pushback from Disney about the movie’s same-sex romance and overarching LGBTQ themes.
UGGGGGGGGGGGH. WHY does an artstyle that looks this good have to be attached to suck woke garbage?! This is why we can't have nice things. Well, we'll always have Arcane, I guess. *sigh*
